Dahlia.
I’m in love again. With dahlias.
Now, if you have been following the story you will already know I have a problem. (I have several actually, but this is not the time for unloading them, lol.) I’m kind of florally polyamorous: first paeonies, then poppies, and all the while courting the odd iris or rose on the side…
So dahlias are my latest floral flirting fling with flowers. And I don’t really grow dahlias myself so it’s a remote love affair with snatched moments of passion in other people’s gardens.
But they are beautiful to love :)
This is a dahlia I photographed in North Cerney House garden about six weeks ago before lockdown round 2. I liked the repeated shapes, and while I was processing it I noticed the heart outlines particularly in the upper petals. At least they saved me struggling too much for a title.
Although the true colour in the flower was overwhelmingly red, there was enough variation to warrant turning the image into mono and recolouring to satisfy the theme.
On reflection I think the subtle variation in the original was more attractive - I have learnt before that turning a flower picture into mono is a dangerous thing to do. So much of our appreciation of flowers is based on our response to their colour. Mono can work but only to emphasise other beauty such as that of texture or shape. Recolouring tends to fall uncomfortably between the two stools. But it’s all a bit of smiley fun on Saturdays :)

[Handheld in overcast daylight.
Developed in Capture One for a dark tone and rich colour.
Reduced Clarity, increased Structure to soften the textures while bringing out the edges.
Into Affinity with USM sharpening to emphasise the edges and another Clarity reduction filter.
I did wonder whether to crop it but decided to leave it much as taken because the receding blur seemed interesting.
Converted to monochrome in Silver Efex with a dark look, vignette and quite a bit of structure. There were lots of attractive possibilities for the tonal contrast but, in the end, I went for a dark moody look using a colour filter to balance everything in the mono conversion.
Back in Affinity, I coloured the plain mono with a Recolour adjustment, in pink magenta. It was love after all…]
Some people hug trees. I’m not one of them.
But do fall in love with them, passionately, completely, indescribably, irretrievably in love. And, to make it worse, I am polyamorous in my affections, unfaithful to just one tree…
Long-time sufferers of my commentaries will perhaps remember that I have two such amours in my garden. This is the first, the cherry Shirofugen. It’s a magnificent spreading thing. Just after the copper leaves come out at the beginning of May the tree bursts into a glorious abundance of pendular double blossoms underneath the canopy that dance in a breeze. They open a blush pastel pink and change through white to a delicate cream as the individual flowers mature…
This was taken yesterday on my patio pointing the camera up so you can see the blooms (you can see a bit of the sky top left). It's for the Crazy Tuesday theme Upwards. As an image it didn’t strike me as crazy, really, but then I realised that I am which compensates a little. I had thought of adding a bit of crazy colour using Topaz, but in the end, I hadn’t the heart to move away from the natural beauty of the flowers. So here we are.

Chance stopped in for the night to stay with me in my cabin at Turtle Mountain. A warm duvet and a hot Chance make for a rather cozy and safe place for the night that makes the snow storm outside seem miles away :-)

Chance and I share a love - a love for Ms Katie Parx. Chance is her eldest daughter, I am one of Katie's girlfriends.
We both love her dearly.
We take care of Katie Parx's family while she is gone, but there is no one left to take care of us, so we decided to take care of each other.
Chance is sweet, kind, intelligent and...caring...
I try to mirror that.
I love learning about her...and learning FROM her...
We feel lost without our shared Katie, so THIS Katie takes a Chance and carries on. We will care for each other so we can care for the others.

It was a dark night. Fortunately the evening was not a cold one and I went outside to cool down. With a bit of judicious photoshopping, I have managed to airbrush the untidy red watering hose and empty flower pots that littered the foreground and hide the washing hanging out to dry on the line in the background.
Didn't do too bad a job, did I? Pity that the camera girl chopped off most of my foot in the foreground.......

Chance and I "chanced" upon each other last night. We are growing closer as friends. We both happened to be readying for bed, She agreed to sleep over with Hobbes and I as Hobbes is a very Brave and Handsome Tiger.
We miss our Katie so very much, but know that she can't control when she can be on. In the meantime, Chance and I take care of each other.
Last night she needed to be held tight and reassured. I was happy to oblige.
I love this pretty girl. She has rapidly become a nice friend.
We will be ok. PK will be back sooner then later. In the meantime, Chance and I watch out for each other. We check in every day and do our best to cover what Ms Katie Parx was able to give both of us. - unconditional love and caring.
Sleep well pretty girl...We are in good hands until PK gets back - each others.

And when I arrived at Candy Girls, I felt distinctly overdressed, as all the pretty girlies were wearing skimpy bikinis..... but I had the last laugh as it got rather chilly at 2am ! In the meantime, here I am, wrapped round the Gazebo pole in the 'smokers yard, caught like a rabbit in the headlights by Roberta's flashgun.... Cute fluffy bunny..... savoury duck... or sexy spring chicken? What do you think?

I was going to call this 'Purple Swamphen pair', but then I read this on Birdlife Australia's website: 'Purple Swamphens are generally found in small groups and studies have shown that these consist of more males than females. More than one male will mate with a single female. All family members, and occasionally the young from a previous brood, share in incubation and care of the young. The nest consists of a platform of trampled reeds with the surrounding vegetation sometimes being used to form a shelter. Often two broods will be raised in a year.'

So here are two members of a polyamorous swamphen clan!
What do they have in common? Nothing special, they are both idioms, brought together by this ditzy red and white outfit.......
A Red herring describes the ploy used by schoolchildren through the ages, to divert their teachers attention from the laid down curriculum.......
A White Elephant is a burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. The origin of this idiom:- Albino Elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries.; Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.
So what does this photo tell us......... the girl in this picture is a distraction, and a high mantenance one at that......... or is she........????
