Here I am in 1960 at age 4 in Oklahoma City on Shartel Street exchanging some Christmas cheer with a cute little thing from my neighborhood while wearing my irresistibly tight-fitting green Air Force flight suit with pilot wings and rank insignia of Captain. Notice the politically incorrect tendencies associated with holding a toy rifle. So you can see I knew exactly how to get the chicks at an early age. This poor girl never had a chance. Strange but true: In 1988 I ended my Air Force service commitment as a Captain, a pilot, and assigned to Tinker AFB, in Oklahoma City. I still enjoy guns, too.

As an aside, the notorious Icelandic dish called hakarl is not offered in this place. The late and very missed Anthony Bourdain once described hakarl as “the single worst, most disgusting and terrible tasting thing” that he had ever eaten, and Gordon Ramsay couldn’t even swallow it. I tried it once. Indeed it was powerfully vile. Historically, it was the reason for the raiding successes of the Vikings: they were desperately seeking things to eat that did not include hakarl.
Unrestored 1962 Rambler Classic Cross Country 400 Station Wagon sits stuffed under the old Mountain Lodge Hotel neon sign, which was moved from Carnuel just east of Albuquerque, New Mexico to front the West Central Route 66 Visitor Center on Nine Mile Hill in Albuquerque.
The Mountain Lodge Hotel dated back to the 1940s but burnt down on December 14, 2014. Its beat-up, landmark neon sign survived and was donated to the Center in 2020. It's been restored down to the stupendously period-stereotypical fat mexican miner in a sombrero riding a donkey, adorning the top. Thanks to flickr artist Patricia Henschen, a 2018 pic from before the sign was moved is here.

I’ve been having anxiety attacks recently. Although I don’t know why it is me being affected when it seems to be the world that is going mad instead! I was sat in the car with the engine idling in a narrow little back street amongst some old 1930’s brick terraced houses in Widnes when I caught sight of some movement in my car door mirror. Looking more closely I saw it was a uniformed traffic warden who appeared to be taking multiple photos of my car with his phone, from different angles. I had deliberately pulled up, out of the way in a back street, where I saw no signs of parking restrictions or yellow lines at the road edge. I got out of the car to ask him what he was doing, and he told me, “You can’t park here”. “Why not?” I asked. “ You’re not allowed to stop on any road round here” was his response. I was bewildered. This was back street Widnes, not Oxford Circus in London. “I wasn’t parked”, I said. “I just pulled over for a minute to read some notes”. He looked at me with a careless attitude. “Doesn’t matter. You stopped, and that’s an offence”, as he started to thumb through a ticket book to an empty form, and readied his pen. I was stunned and filled with anxiety….confused. And then I woke up.
I had just woken from a troubling dream and the illuminated bedside clock told me it was 02:32 AM. What tormented mind was churning over such things during the night? After all, I was well brought up, sent to an expensive school to teach me right from wrong, and now at the age of 60, all of a sudden, it seems I can’t do right for doing wrong. The world is turning upside down.
For instance, this week the University of Manchester, that great seat of learning, decided they would no longer permit clapping (applause…with hands) at awards ceremonies and student gatherings in case it cause anxiety to those who don’t like loud noises. Instead they suggest that if people want to show appreciation they do “Jazz Hands”. Now, as someone with some significant hearing loss (only half deaf) I have come to appreciate how critical sight and hearing are in life. You really don’t appreciate it until it happens to you, and then you understand how devastating blindness and deafness can be to an individual. But if banning clapping was to help a tiny minority group who suffered anxiety at loud noise, don’t you think a room full of people wafting their hands around you silently would cause you severe anxiety if you were blind?
Changing tack a little, if you look at a map of the British Isles or Scotland you will normally have found the Shetland Islands, which are 150 miles north of the top of the Scottish mainland, are shown on the page as a little section in the top right corner and a border around it to show that the sea in between is omitted. Apparently some people thought this border on the page is actually srepresenting a rectangular wall in the sea around the islands!!! And the Scottish Parliament which is currently overseeing considerable deficiencies in Health, Education and Policing saw fit to waste time to put together and pass a law that says it is now illegal to make a map in Scotland that does not show all the water between the mainland and Shetland, even if that means wasting a large amount of paper (Yes, the Scottish Government does pride itself on its Environmental policies), and even though it means having to show Mainland Scotland very small on the page to fit it all in.
I wonder where such stupid ideas come from, but in a way I’m not surprised. I’ve noticed that young people are losing the ability to remember. Ask a question of them and the answer is, “Dunno”. If they need to know they will Google it. Fine, they will get the answer. But their brain is not being used. Ask them a different question and they will go to Google again. Ask them the same question a week later and they will Google once more! Mankind has spent millennia evolving and developing his (or her, or one of those transgender inbetweeners) brain. The human brain has evolved and grown in size in homo sapiens giving him his capacity for knowledge and capabilities. But (and this might be contentious)……. but I believe that soon we will see children being born in this country with smaller heads. In fact I might suggest that in a few hundred years ago they look back on this period as the era where humanity failed its children, because some of the learning and restrictions being put on youngsters today is distorting the way they grow up so much that it will be viewed as having been a crime against children at some stage in the future.
Yes I’ve started developing thoughts that may be very un-PC but are perfectly in line with what one of the finest private schools taught me when I was young. But when we have a situation with so many starving children in the world, so much youth unemployment (particularly in a protected state like the EU), youth crime, disrespect for elders, kids with allergies and disorders, kids being told they should decide at a very young age what gender they want to be….if one gender at all, kids having gender change operations, kids living outside a stable family environment, and children having no safe places for them to play in, when ‘safe’ may mean they are not allowed to climb trees, play games, etc, if there is any risk of them hurting themselves no matter how minor.
It’s all crazy to a man who was taught respect by his teachers and by his parents, who were a married man and a woman. And he grew up wearing trousers (most of the time), having scraped and bleeding knees, and a few bruises, but could climb to the top of a tree, and swing off a branch and jump to the ground mimicking an ape or Tarzan (who was a man, not a transgender that had not been invented then). I knew no child with a nut allergy, bulimia, ADHD, tourettes. Even those with a single parent were an extreme rarity. I know no one who thought that the Black and White Minstrel Show on prime time BBC Saturday Night TV had anything to do with black people in a racist context (and besides the ever so correct BBC always called those people “coloured” as being less offensive than “black”). It’s all become so ridiculous. Some individual will even take offence to my kid on a steam traction engine photo doing a ‘Jazz hands’ with coal on his hands and face, because they think it is racist and he is trying to imitate a black person. It’s insane! I honestly believe these ‘problems’ have been created by recent generations who have warped our civilisation into something that has become more divided than it ever was. These things really did not exist when I was young!
To me, everything is becoming topsy turvy, and for all they say about advancing society, yes, some things are easier in an Amazon or Tesco shopping on-line basis, but go on, tell me what’s better? And if I’m displaying some anxiety in my rant above, which minority group can I join that will allow me to have the rest of society bend to my wishes? I’ve even got an anxiety towards people who wear yellow hi-viz vests and jackets. Can I have them outlawed?
I struggled with this topic today, didn't want to offend people. I hope I haven't now. I remember in the olden days when smoking was considered sexy and now it seems to be offensive.

In particular, many males here would be written off as "scruffy" or "unkempt" in other Alpha cities of the world.
Is it not striking how it takes more than a passing glance, to distinguish between the street style of someone who is homeless versus the street style of someone who believes themselves to be "part of something"?
My friend and I were discussing this one evening, when he said he offered a meal to a guy who looked like a raggamuffin, and the terse reply was "uh, I'm not homeless, dude."
