On Monday 16th January, 100 new recruits to Greater Manchester Police will spend a week officially being introduced to their future communities.

The ‘Engagement Week’ provides new recruits with the chance to meet with a number of local community and faith groups, as well as learn more about their borough’s policing priorities.

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “The Engagement Week provides a fantastic opportunity for our future frontline officers to go out and meet the communities where they will be working.

“It is extremely important that as well as learning from our experienced officers about their neighbourhoods, that the new recruits are introduced to the diverse range of communities that make up Greater Manchester.

“By being open and speaking directly with our communities, our officers can learn first-hand what concerns local people may have.

“Greater Manchester Police continues to be fully committed to both keeping the public safe through effective policing and to be a service that reflects the communities of Greater Manchester that we serve.

“In this intake alone over a third of the recruits are from black and minority ethnic communities and Greater Manchester Police welcomes and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply for frontline roles during our recruitment drives throughout the year.”

It may seem hard to believe, in times when joining the police service is very difficult, but back in the 1970s forces struggled to recruit young people.

Greater Manchester Police tried many novel ways to get people interested in joining up but this one does seem a little far-fetched …if amusing.

Inspector Alan Budgett, the Force’s careers officer, attempts to ‘recruit’ a German Shepherd dog who has just been shown to his desk.

Both parties look keen and the inspector is poised to make notes about the potential new recruits qualifications.

Sadly, the caption to this image does not tell us whether he was successful in getting a paw print on an application form.

It may be a light-hearted photograph but it shows how serious the problem of recruitment was at the time.

Tragically, Manchester City player and later manager, Tony Book died just a few days ago on 13 January 2024. He will always remain an icon and legend to the club’s fans and football fans in general.

Back in 1976 he, with a little help from Rodney Marsh, he was happy to take part in GMP’s latest drive to recruit new officers

The images were taken at the club's former stadium, Maine Road.

Greater Manchester Police is one of the UK's largest police forces and is responsible for keeping its diverse population of almost three million safe. Manchester in particular has been billed the most diverse city in Europe with its population speaking at least 153 different languages. We are committed to ensuring that the make-up of our workforce is reflective of the communities we serve. We recognise that having a diverse workforce makes us more approachable and relevant to the public.

Neighbourhood Policing is at the very heart of what we do - from tackling every day crime and antisocial behaviour, to gathering information to help us defeat terrorism and organised crime. It is about having the right people, in the right place, in the right numbers, at the right time. Neighbourhood Policing responds to the needs of our communities within Greater Manchester. We will listen to the views of local people and respond to the issues they raise and we will feed back on what action has been taken as a result of their concerns.

Over the past twelve months, Local Resolution Officers (LROs) have been introduced into Local Policing Teams (LPT’s) around the force to support the back office management of crimes and incidents. As a Local Resolution Officer you will play a central role in providing an excellent service to Greater Manchester's citizens. The aim of the role is to resolve non-emergency calls for service by the public at the earliest possible time and in the most effective way.

Reporting to the Sergeant, you will:

• Provide a service to the public by offering advice, arranging officer appointments, and recording crimes.

• Telephone resolve incidents directed to the LPT wherever possible.

• Review initial reports of crime, classify and file crimes where appropriate, and allocate crimes to LPT officers.

SKILLS

• Excellent communication skills

• The ability to handle issues and queries through gathering information from a range of sources, and making reasoned decisions

• The ability to produce work to high standards of accuracy and clarity

• Strong IT skills

KNOWLEDGE

• Local knowledge of crime trends, hotspots, on-going problem solving, repeat victims and community culture is desirable.

EXPERIENCE

• Experience of dealing with customer enquiries by telephone and/ or face-to-face in a busy service organisation.

The role is focussing on problem solving and achieving a speedy and effective resolution to citizens’ problems and as such, LROs are becoming an integral part of the LPT. By resolving the problem sooner the citizen receives the service that they need allowing them to ‘put it behind them’ and ‘get on with their lives’. It also avoids unnecessary work being channelled to other members of the LPT allowing them to focus on local priority issues.

We are inviting applicants who are ready for a new challenge to apply for this role and to join a successful team on each borough making a real difference to our customers, communities and people’s lives.

You will be asked to fill in an expression of interest form and you will attach your CV to the vacancy. You will then be asked to undertake an assessment and interview as part of the selection process. Successful candidates will then proceed through the remaining stages of the recruitment process for this role.

We encourage and welcome applications from all backgrounds and all of our communities, particularly from black and minority ethnic groups (BME) who are currently under-represented. All applications are judged on merit.

To apply for this role you must have a good record of attendance, at least during the last two years.
