The Poison Dart frog belongs to the scientific family Dendrobatidae, which contains more than 175 individual species spread across a range that includes large parts of Central and South America. They wear some of the most brilliant and beautiful colours on Earth.

Depending on individual habitats, which extend from the tropical forests of Costa Rica to Brazil, their coloring can be yellow, gold, copper, red, green, blue, or black. Their elaborate designs and hues are deliberately ostentatious to ward off potential predators, a tactic called aposematic coloration.

During the wet season, male granular poison frogs (which are very toxic as a way to defend against predators) inhabit lowland humid forests with fast-flowing streams, vocalizing incessantly. Ranging from Costa Rica to Panama, this frog behaves rather aggressively, especially during the wet season, the time of year when males divide stream banks into their “territories” so as to court female poison frogs. The frogs use the territories as calling sites, in addition to places to lay eggs.

The golden poison frog or the golden dart frog (Phyllobates terribilis) is a poison dart frog endemic to the Pacific coast of Colombia. The optimal habitat of P. terribilis is the rainforest with high rain rates (5 m or more), altitude between 100–200 m, temperature of at least 26 °C, and relative humidity of 80–90%.

Terribilis frogs are often considered innocuous due to their small size (1- 1.5 cm) and bright colours; however, wild specimens are lethally toxic. This poison dart frog is confirmed to have killed humans who touched the wild frog directly.

Legend has it that it got the name when Balor, the one-eyed giant king of Tory, was killed here by his exiled grandson, Lughaidh, whereupon the poison from his evil eye split the rock and poisoned the glen. Who knows...

Difficult for me to comprehend the transformation of my yard in the past week or so. Where a short time ago there was light and air, it's now a dense overgrowth of verdant plant life. It's such a sudden distortion of reality. Trees, bushes, weeds, ivy (much of it of the poisonous variety) have gained the upper hand in my yard defense system. I worked valiantly in early spring to cut back the budding vegetation in hopes of maintaining some open space. And for a while it seemed I had conquered Mother Nature. But she bested me as she always does. I've been squeezed out once again, left to occupy an ever decreasing patch of mowed grass. The square footage just a fraction of where it started. There are literally sections of the yard that are completely off limits to me now, at least until winter. Unreachable absent massive labor to cut my way through the tangle. And to what end? I figure I'll let this go for now and pick some other battle. While doing some maintenance work on the side of my house over the weekend, I came upon vines that had literally attached themselves to the structure. In just a few short weeks they had crept insidiously up toward first floor windows. This is where I made my stand, ripping the vines away and pulling them from the ground. I've ceded the yard, but I can't let them take my house. But I know they'll grow back. No time to let down my guard.

White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) adult Senegal_9223

The white-backed vulture, like many African vultures, has suffered a rapid decline. When it was first assessed in 1988 it was classified as a Least concern species owing to a large range and population. It was reassessed from a Least Concern to Near Threatened species in the 2007 IUCN Red List after the beginnings of a major decline were noticed.

In 2012, more information was available about population trends, and the estimates suggested that within the next three generations the white-backed vulture would decrease by 50%. Consequently it was added to the list of Endangered species. In October 2015, it was further up-listed to Critically Endangered because the decline had reach a magnitude that...... puts the vulture at an extreme risk of extinction!

CC Week 32: Be a Nature Photographer

This plant is very common in California. I was careful when taking photos to be sure I did not touch any part of the plant. If I had I would have regretted it as really nasty itchiness is the consequence of doing so.

Be aware that poison oak appears in different forms. This plant is a shrub, but it can also be found as a vine twisting around tree trunks or be on the ground like a ground cover.
