A trip to Carmel, California meant a visit to Point Lobos, and an attempt at some Edward Weston-inspired photos of the famous state park.

I wanted to try to make viewers feel the emptiness of the place so I photographed the entrance through an empty swing. I think it works.

I know its rude to point, but looky looky... I liked this graffiti piece – its nothing fantastic, but the exploding blob looked quite effective I thought!

Spent today hanging with a close friend, Shawn (Who tomorrow I'll be editing and uploading some photos of) and my brother. We went on a few short hikes and walked from Dash Point to Browns Point and back, and then some.

Rock detail at Point Lobos, CA.

Just got back from a day trip to the point reyes coastline. We went to the famous lighthouse which was honestly not that exciting to me, the thing was about 20 feet tall. We then drove over to the other side of the peninsula and took a short hike to "chimney rock". I didn't see any rocks that looked remotely like a chimney but there were some spectacular views of the rugged and beautiful coastline shrouded in fog.

Porche West’s artful expresssions exists at the nexus of photography and sculpture, the point where photography and sculpture converge. Dramatic and thought-provoking photographs are “housed” within salvaged architectural elements adorned with thought-provoking, symbolic objects. The net effect is additive - the sum is greater than the parts - photographs encorported within sculpture deepen the meaning and message of the art.

It is Porche West’s contention that flat photographs fail to achieve the richness and dimensionality of photographic sculpture. Though a framed photograph can tell a good story, a photograph “housed” in sculpture gives a more nuances and deep narrative. Salvaged architectural debris door casings, flooring, window frames, knobs and pulls give the photograph a sense of place, an authenticity that comes from being at home in the soul of the artist’s works.

Porche West’s assemblage is cultural “curatorialism” masked as art. The simple behaviors and beliefs of ordinary people are universal and easily understood. Religious faith, death and burial rituals, celebration and suffering are comprehended, if not shared, by all humanity. To see one’s own emotions in the face of a Haitian child or the hands of an elderly woman in New Orleans, is to be reminded that that which binds us together is greater than that which divides us. We are in essence, one.

Photographer Christopher Porche West was born in California but has family ties in Louisiana. He has been working with the scenes and people of New Orleans for more than 30 years. His interests began in the late 1970s when he came to New Orleans from the University of California Santa Cruz to research free people of color. He continued to be interested in the city's culture and decided to pursue topics in contemporary New Orleans, including Creoles, Mardi Gras Indians, jazz funerals, neighborhood events, and passing rites. Though he kept up his commercial studio in Newport Beach, California, he self-published 'Eloquent Visages,' a series of Mardi Gras Indian portraits. In 1995, West permanently moved in New Orleans. He set up a temporary studio for the Indians that allowed them to be in control of the means of their documentation; this was a first. In the late 1990s, he continued to explore his curiosity in the people of New Orleans, but he also began experimenting with scrap material that he found around the city. His new medium was part photography, part sculpture. His relationship with the American Haitian Development Association allowed him to make three trips to Haiti in the time span of two years, from 1998-2000. These trips were the first of a series of visits to the Caribbean. In 2003, Carnival Interests led him to visit Cuba. in 2004 and 2012. Though he has been featured in over 40 exhibitions, his most notable accomplishment was being chosen to singularly commemorate the Louisiana bicentennial in Paris. For this event, his work was featured at Festival L'espirit Jazz a Saint Germain des Pres. His work can be found at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Harvard University, Amistad Research Center, and the University of California-San Diego.

Point Reyes is a prominent cape on the Pacific coast of northern California in the United States. It is located in Marin County approximately 30 mi (48 km) WNW of San Francisco.

The peninsula is a well defined area, separated from the rest of Marin County by a rift zone of the San Andreas Fault, about half of which is sunk below sea level and forms Tomales Bay. The Point Reyes National Seashore includes wild coastal beaches and headlands, estuaries, and uplands, with a coastline that bears a striking resemblance to Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Although parts of the peninsula are commercially farmed, and parts are under the jurisdiction of other conservation authorities, the National Park Service provides signage and seeks to manage visitor impact on the entire peninsula.

The northernmost part of the peninsula is maintained as a reserve for tule elk, which are readily seen there. The preserve is also very rich in raptors and shorebirds.

The Point Reyes Lighthouse attracts whale-watchers looking for the Gray Whale migrating south in mid-January and north in mid-March.

Very courageous recent admission by the petulantly peevish Sad Clown, "I am a Tyrant-in-Waiting, who still takes every opportunity to find fault in even complimentary comments." He also doesn't understand that calling someone, 'infamous', is an insult [see THE THREE AMIGOS' misunderstanding of the word].

A confirmed and habitual gossip, Sad Bear Clown's deepest wish is to be paid for publicly slandering noted people of whom he is deeply envious; constantly projecting his profound self-contempt.

He admitted, "Bought a plaid flannel shirt and scarf, then posted a picture of the bag and claimed the label had intentions of sponsoring my non-existent tv series, which they hadn't."

Sad Bear Clown's most recent confession: he lied about signing for representation with a talent agency on Avenue of the Stars in Los Angeles. The agency, with no Sad Bear Clown-connection, has a virtual ( p.o. box ) address in what is known locally as The Devil's Tower -- www.davincivirtual.com/loc/us/california/los-angeles-virt...

He was overheard drunkenly confessing to a patron at a restaurant bar, after having loudly lied about being commissioned by the British Royal family to procure a ship for one of their ranks to Christen: Sad Bear Clown confided that many times, while alone, looking in the mirror, he repeats to himself, "Amateur Night in Dixie, Amateur Night in Dixie, Amateur Night..."

[I have been asked about removing this post since Sad Bear Clown was detained by police while on a purported "location scout" for an as-yet non-existent television pilot and series. He was held for Disorderly Conduct and Lascivious Innuendo in a public place, directed at an individual. He was released on bail from a Mayberry-esque jail in a picturesque small town, pending a Magistrate's hearing.]

Wolf Point is the location at the confluence of the North, South and Main Branches of the Chicago River in the present day Near North Side, Loop, and Near West Side community areas of Chicago. This fork in the river is historically important in the development of early Chicago.

Strong winds stirring up a few waves of East Point this morning. One of many observation posts, on the right, that were built during WWII. Built in late 1941 early 1942 due to possible threat of invasion. It won't be long before erosion will cause it to fall into the sea,

The historic Victorian era station at Point Of Rocks, MD still looks fabulous in the late afternoon light although the signals and the ADA cabinet clutter the picture somewhat. Designed by E. Francis Baldwin and built by the Baltimore And Ohio Railroad in 1873. It is situated at the junction of CSX's Old Main Line and the Metropolitan Subdivision.

I love Artist Point. I can't believe that I don't have any interior shots! Still, the sign is a good enough reminder :-)

I really like the sign because it is very 'Rennie MacIntosh'. At the time of shooting, I couldn't make my mind up on composition. I think I prefer this elongated version though.
