The name of this spot pretty much says it all...easy to see how Yellowstone got its name when you're standing here looking at this canyon. I'm always amazed at how different it looks each time we visit, depending on the time of day, the season, the lighting, etc. One thing's for sure though, it's always awe inspiring to stand at this point and marvel at Mother Nature's artistic ability.

Have a great Wednesday....looks like it's going to be a hot one here today with temps nearing triple digits...yikes!!!! Appreciate all your visits and comments :-)

This morning I was up at 5am (yes, on a school day, I must be mad!) and headed to Start Point Lighthouse on the Devon coast.

This is one of my favourite spots in Devon, the coast here is just so stunning and It's a perfect place for sunrise as it faces East.

The weather report said there would be a mixture of low and high cloud, but when I got up it had changed and there was only the slightest hint of high cloud in the sky, with a fair bit of haze on the horizon. The haze did me a favour and diffused the sunlight as it rose meaning I didn't get any horrible lens flare.

This is the first of three, maybe four shots from this morning, I hope you like it.

Point Pinos Lighthouse was lit in 1855 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States and even the lens is original. Alcatraz Island Lighthouse preceded Point Pinos by 8 months, but was replaced in 1909 by the expanding military prison. It is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation. Museum exhibits and other functions are operated by the city of Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California. The lighthouse is surrounded by the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links. Pigeon Point Light Station or Pigeon Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1871 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It is the tallest lighthouse (tied with Point Arena Light) on the West Coast of the United States. It is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation. Pigeon Point Light Station is located on the coastal highway (State Route 1), 5 miles (8 km) south of Pescadero, California, between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. The 115-foot (35 m), white masonry tower, resembles the typical New England structure.

The interior of Fort Point echoes with history and emptiness now, but is open to visitors and photographers like our group of Flickr friends who prowled the rooms and passageways last Saturday, sizing up the photo ops and trying out various ideas or POVs. I didn't mind practicing with my tripod here, for some reason. Usually I prefer to keep moving, but this is a place to take your time and consider the light, the angles, and most of all the character of the scene.

The Europa Point Lighthouse stands proudly at the very tip of Gibraltar. Its great beam lights the way for mariners sailing through the often turbulent Straits of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. Before the lighthouse was built, sailors relied on flames flickering from the nearby chapel of Our Lady of Europa. The lighthouse was constructed in 1838 and became known as the Trinity Lighthouse at Europa Point.

I had to drive close to an hour on icy county roads with occasional detours due to road closures to get to this location. It was worth it.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 22.893+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

**** This frame was chosen on August 7th 2018 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #80. This is my 103rd photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 17.950 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****

Black and white, The tree is a Monterey Cypress and I believe that the cabin is also made of a Monterey Cypress. One of the first great California photographs of the 20th century was taken by Edward Weston of the bark of one of these magnificent trees at this park. There is a spot in the park called Weston Beach that is named in his memory.

Overcast morning, perfect for a nice hike on some of the coastal trails near the lighthouse.

This was taken in Lubec, Maine located at the northeast point of Maine. The lighthouse, seen here through the fog that rolled into the harbor area is located on Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada. We stayed overnight here before our trip out to Machais Seal Island the next day.

An appropriation was made by Parliament in 1882 for the construction of a lighthouse near the southern end of Campobello Island to guide vessels through Lubec Narrows, the small passage between the island and the United States mainland. After the exact site was selected and specifications prepared, tenders were invited for the work, and a contract for $790 was awarded to Angus Fisher of St. George in 1883.

Mulholland Point Lighthouse, a wooden octagonal tower standing forty-four feet from its base to the vane on its lantern, was completed in 1884, but its fixed white light was not exhibited until 1885. E. Chanteloup, a Montreal establishment that outfitted many Canadian lighthouses, supplied the lantern and lighting apparatus at a cost of $683.26, and Malachi Parker was hired as the first keeper of Mulholland Lighthouse. The tower’s light was shown from a height of sixty feet and was visible up to thirteen miles.

Around the time Mulholland Lighthouse was constructed, Campobello Island was becoming a popular summer colony for wealthy Canadians and Americans. Among these was James Roosevelt Sr., whose wife Sara Delano had a number of cousins living in Maine. The Roosevelt family made Campobello Island their summer home starting in 1883, and it was there that their son Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who became the thirty-second President of the United States, would spend his summers.
