" Close your eyes and sleep

Ignore all the burdens that you keep

Come whatever may

They could never harm you anyway

Stirrings in the wind

Resonates a whisper from within

Warnings from afar

Telling you to heed the morning star

Waking from the dream

Witnessing the smoke that's rolling in

The end is what you fear

The scent of embers lingers in the air... "

Happy weekend dear flickr friends and thank you for all......

Classical ballet originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of pointe shoes. This was captured at the Photography Show 2019 at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

Day 67/365:

Another busy day with little time for photography. My grandson's preschool is closed this week due to Covid so we are helping out a lot with day care. So this isn't the shot I had planned but a few pink things put together before the light went. Everyone loves a little pink don't they?

April 2023: A month in 30 pictures

We've had our grandson staying with us since we got back from Norfolk. He is a five year old whirlwind so I'm pretty exhausted...so a rather thrown together flat lay and so much for trying to catch up on Flickr!

Wishing you all a wonderful (and relaxing) weekend

It's a miserable rainy day today so I decided to have a play. I took a few photos of my dried hydrangea...so you may be subjected to more.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Beneath the sky of stormy gray,

Two swans in fury, feathers fray,

Their wings like swords, in bitter flight,

A clash of shadows, dark and light.

Each cry a wound, each strike a tear,

As love and rage fill heavy air,

They circle close, then part with force,

Two hearts at war, on fateful course.

Yet in the storm, a moment still,

Eyes meet with sorrow, not with will,

For in their fight, they both have known,

That neither wins when love is thrown.

Clash of Feathers: The Battle of the Swans

Backstage at the California Ballet

Today where I live is a holiday, so I asked a dear friend of mine who is also a photographer to join me for a photography day at my house. We photographed many different things, using my back terrace as a studio.

Amongst other things to photograph, she brought a pair of used ballet pointe shoes that she found in a little charity shop close to her home a few months ago. Here I have photographed them on a roll of hand made paper, and accessorised it with a silk flower made by hand using the "French silk flower technique" by a fashion designer friend of mine, given to me as a gift when I turned forty - some years ago now.

I have given this image a blue wash, and I am dedicating this photo to my dear Flickr friend Finou FinouCat who is a dancer, but currently cannot dance due to damage to her foot. I am hoping that she will be able to dance again soon.

I must remember next time I decide to do a self portrait, just how long it takes to get the idea from my head to the finished article. I've had this idea for a while and keep putting it off through lack of time. Some of you may remember that I made this tutu for a self portrait a few years ago (in comments). I always wanted to use it again and the pointe shoes I acquired recently seemed the perfect accompaniment. My ageing hands and feet spoil it hence the title. I take my hat (or shoes) off to ballet dancers...my feet were killing me from just posing in them. I'm not 100% happy with this but are we ever? Not sure I will try to recreate it though.

This is part of a handmade pointe ballet shoe. It's made from handmade paper, with silk threads, which has been painted a soft, blush pink. The ribbons are vintage. The shoe is less than 1" wide.

Day 81/365:

Crazy Tuesday - Footwear

Sorry, same old, same old from me with another flat lay.

I do try to think of something different although it's quite difficult at the moment as we are still testing positive so still isolating. It's a good job I have a never ending prop stash. The little vintage book is from a market in Berlin, the tickets from a trip to Nantucket during a holiday in Cape Cod. Oh, and my lovely dead roses making yet another appearance. All displayed on a scarf that my daughter-in-law gave me to use in my still life photos. HCT

I am trying to persuade my husband that we don't need to keep all our vinyl, he seems to think we do even though our record player is in the loft. Oh well, I guess they're always handy for a photo prop.

We tend to picture ballerinas a certain way in our minds, but they have many dimensions. Anastasia Tillman is a member of the Texas Ballet Theatre Company. This is one of her favorites from our shoot. Keller, Texas, USA, January 2022

My old pointe shoes from a long time ago - the things I hang on to! They look do look rather tattered, but that's the nature of ballet. It's a tough activity.

My pointe shoes of choice have always been Chacott’s Coppelia II. When Chacott stopped running that line, it was just in time for a fateful injury that ended my career. So I guess these things work out in the end, eh?

My sister was a dancer her entire life until about a year ago when she had some severe knee injuries.

Three surgeries later she will never dance again. It's a shame, she was phenomenal.

I took Heather to a ballet for Christmas this year...she had never been to one before. I was shocked to hear that. I suppose it's because I grew up in the dance world but I couldn't possibly imagine a world without dance and more specifically ballet. In any event we had fun and she looked radiant.

Also, this was shot on a polaroid and then I took a picture of the polaroid with my E500 since at the time I was scannerless.

Out on the shimmering waves, the Irish Ferries Dublin Swift and the Dublin Port Company pilot boat DPC glide past each other in a cheerful maritime dance. The Dublin Swift, with its sleek white hull and bold green lettering, looks like a proud ambassador of the sea, while the vibrant orange pilot boat zips alongside, ready to guide the way. It’s a delightful sight, as if the two are exchanging a friendly wave before going about their important duties!

The Dublin Swift, launched in 2001, is a high-speed ferry known for its impressive 48-knot top speed, whisking up to 800 passengers between Dublin and Holyhead in just under two hours. This modern marvel, operated by Irish Ferries, has been a favorite for travelers seeking a quick and scenic crossing, carrying a mix of cars, trucks, and eager explorers. Its history includes a refit in 2019 to enhance passenger comfort, making it a beloved vessel on this busy Irish Sea route.

Meanwhile, the Dublin Port pilot boat DPC plays a crucial role in ensuring safe navigation. These agile boats, often reaching speeds of 25-30 knots, ferry skilled pilots to incoming and outgoing ships, guiding them through the tricky waters of Dublin Bay. With Dublin Port handling over 32 million tonnes of goods annually, the pilot boat’s importance can’t be overstated—it’s the unsung hero keeping the maritime traffic flowing smoothly, all while sporting that eye-catching orange hue!

I began the digital process with a request in an AI app. From there, I had to remove a middle leg! I created a hand and gave her some flowers to hold! And I tweaked the color, tone, and contrast!

With this in mind, the AI process allowed me to begin the creation but by no means was my final creation. I feel like I have a digital painting of this ballerina!

..she no longer knows. The body remembers and revels in the movement that wasn't simply learned but embedded in muscle and bone. The pain is a familiar comfort, a right earned. And just for a moment, before the vocal internal critic resurfaces, she remembers with almost overwhelming emotion the freedom that was ballet's gift.

here it is mok-sha:

this past fall, we decided to have a late september "christmas" in saskatoon since my brother's in-laws had just sold their house here and decided to move to victoria to be closer to my brother's wife and the kids in victoria. the plan was they would just live in my brother's basement until they bought a house. since their move date was set for oct. 12, it was unlikely we would all be here in saskatoon at christmas. so i flew out and my sister-in-law's only sister flew in from the states.

we spent a week hanging out. i met my new niece, we went to the zoo, ate, played etc. at some point, my sister in law was talking about all of her cousins. my nephew piped up and asked why he didn't have any cousins....long pause. my sister-in-law laughed (since neither her sister nor i are anywhere near procreating, tick tick tick...) and explained he was going to have to wait a while. i suppose in the moment it was kind of funny, but really, it made me feel bad.

so my bro went home, i went home, and then less than a week later, the accident and i was flying out to victoria for the funeral. since my sister-in-law's parents had already packed up and were staying at a friend's house, they just ended up moving and living with her, as planned, but just a week earlier. c'est bizarre.

****************************

my brother recently died in an accident. he was only 33 and left behind a wife, a 4-month-old and a three-year old. since i have never experienced the death of someone close to me, it has been devastating to say the least. it feels surreal and it is still hard to believe.

the days are heavy and i can't imagine what the next year is going to be like. i thought joining 365 would help pull me through the day-to-day. on verra...
