Habitat: grassland, edge of a pasture next to mixed hardwood forest; locally flat terrain; calcareous, skeletal ground; dry, partly shady, rather open place; exposed to direct rain; elevation 130 m (430 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region.
Substratum: soil.

Comment: Taxonomy of the genus Helleborus is 'complex'. Several interpretations exist. The two main reasons are: very frequent occurrences of intermediated forms between species and many and frequent hybrids. Helleborus multifidus ssp. istriacus had been for decades considered as a subspecies of similar Helleborus odorus. Once it was also considered a subspecies of Helleborus viridis. Other authors consider it on species level as Helleborus istriacus. Following the key in Rottersteiner (2014), Ref.: 1 the photographed plants belong to Helleborus multifidus ssp. istriacus due to its palmatelly divided ground leaves with many leaflets (10-15), which are deeply incised, some nearly to the bottom of the leaf and some to about one half of the leaflet length. The leaf edge is finely and sharply serrated (toothed with teeth directed forward). The leaflets should be wider than 15 mm in contrast to very similar subspecies Helleborus multifidus ssp. multifidus, which is supposed to have narrower leaflets. To distinguish both is many times difficult. This is particularly true (including Helleborus odorus) in early spring in March when plants bloom. The ground leaves are not yet developed at that time and the flower stalks and flowers are very variable in all of them. These pictures show plants already forming seeds.
The Helleborus multifidus ssp. istriacus is endemic to peninsula Istria and surrounding regions including Kvarner archipelago islands. Apart of this it can be found also in Croatia's central-western part. It grows also in southwest Slovenia, as well as in most northwest part of Italy near the town Trieste.

My main goal when attending Toy Art Gallery's Resin Toy Show was to get as many of my toys into everyone's collection that I could. I had a bag full of Gompers, Swamp Boggers, and Podlings to give and trade. When Paul gave me the clear Chibi Alien Welt with holographic color changing glitter I just had to give him a Podling. I make resin toys because I love toys. I like to give my toys to folk that love them. It was a hoot to meet so many of my flickr friends at the show. I get so much inspiration here. Thanks to all of you, and please, stay tuned!!!

I plan to bring several Podlings to the opening night of the Resin Toy show at Toy Art Gallery June 10th, 2011. I hope to trade them with other artists, toy for toy. Let me know if you'll be at the show - I'll have toys to trade!

Podlings are the simple folk that live along the countryside and often fall victim to the Gompers. A Gomper would rather eat hamburgers, but when the hamburgers run out, Podlings are their next favorite meat source.
Each box contains one Podling and Pod inside a printed bag on top of a mini block print signed on the back by J.E.Moores. This nifty package is not for sale. This item is for TRADE only. Toy for a toy. If you make toys, let's trade!!!

It was asked when Gompers were not eating hamburgers or wee little Podlings, what did they eat? Swamp Boggers get the worst of it either way. Gompers are always stomping on the Swamp Boggers, and will eat them if there is nothing else. Luckily there is no end to the Swamp Boggers because they are born pregnant.

[F121214] Jean Weber stopped over in Seattle as part of a tour around the Pacific Coast for some conferences. She also managed to have a meet-up in Seattle with old friends and some who came down from Vancouver, BC, to see her.
My acquaintance with Jean came with the creation of the Apache OpenOffice project incubator (AOOi). Although I had observed her support for contributors documentation and users guides on LibreOffice, I did not know how extensive her work was until we were both on the AOOi Podling Project Management Committee.
Learning that she was going to be in Seattle, I arranged to have lunch with her at the Seattle-Tacoma airport before she departed for California and later return to Australia. It was a pleasure to be able to chat and compare our lengthy histories (and shared affection for science fiction) in person.
I yearn to manage to be at some open-source and interoperability-focused events where I can meet many others. So far, that hasn't worked out, so I welcome opportunities when colleagues pass through Seattle instead.
