I haven't been into San Fransisco in three months. Taking the BART train is my preferred mode of transportation. I love sketching my fellow passengers. The dog was alert. The woman, wearing this stange headgear, seemed stuporous.November 6, 2024

My cousin Susan from Seattle came to Iowa for the last weekend of my art exhibit. We went to Marie's house for a visit. Marie's dogs--Valentina and Joshi--took an immediate liking to Susan. March 30, 2013

An abandoned limestone quarry is now a county park. My husband looked for fossils while I sketched the south wall across the water.

This was the 1st page of a new pocket-size Moleskine. The paper color has changed. It's not as yellow as the ones I've been using for years. October 7, 2014

This small shed in an alleyway close to my house in Cedar Falls, Iowa, has a cement roof. How unusual! The shed is between two mature elm trees. One of the tree trunks has grown into the shed. Any day that is sunny, whether in winter or summer, the people who live to the left hang clothes, towels, and linen out on the line in their backyard. April 18, 2015

At the oral surgeon's office, waiting to be seen, I was very nervous. Even my lines look nervous! Sketching helped me to stay relatively calm before the procedure. September 16, 2014

The fore-edge is the outside edge that a reader would use to thumb through the pages. In order to view the painting, the leaves of the book must be fanned, exposing the edges of the pages and thereby the painting.

A national park on Saint Simons Island, Georgia. Escaping the seemingly endless Iowa winter, I reveled in the new green of the deciduous trees and the lawns on this south Georgia, coastal island. We were on our way to Little Saint Simons Island. March 28, 2014

Today, I was at the Hearst Center for the Arts to give an in-gallery lecture to a Wartburg College painting class about my exhibit Drawing the Town flic.kr/s/aHsjDHxc1R. I stayed afterwards to sketch, again, in Mae Latta Hall, the lovely, small performance space that looks out on the now snow-covered woods and sculpture garden. February 28, 2013

A friend joined us at the end of our 2 week stay in Maine. We hiked The Great Wass Island Nature Conservancy Trail. When we came out of the woods to the rocky shore, I sketched and she looked for perfect round stones and, from a boulder perch, watched scuttling crabs. September 6, 2015

Tracks run through my neighborhood. They are used rarely to deliver coal to the coal burning utilities plant by the Cedar River, here in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The tracks cross an alleyway which parallels Franklin and Tremont, between 4th and 5th Streets. May 1, 2015

I sketched from the TV screen from my Iowa easy chair. The game is fast paced. The camera allows only a a split second glimpse of each subject. This was a challenge and great fun.

Nikon S3 Olympic - nice and smooth. here it is coupled with the Millennium version of the famous Nikkor 50mm f1.4. It is a very good lens - up there with Leica Summilux Asph and the M-Nokton 50mm f1.5. However, I don't like the "bottle neck" at the mount - feels clumsy. I usually pair the S3 with the S mount Zeiss Nokton 50m f1.5 instead or the Color Skopar 50mm f2.5 in S-mount. Much more comfortable.

There's been a hard frost and the leaves have mostly fallen. Our perennial and kitchen gardens in the backyard have been cleaned up and put to "bed" for the winter. November 8, 2014

It happened on the morning of August 19th, a sunny late summer day. Our house shook and the ground trembled. We heard a loud boom. Had there been an earthquake? Had our chimney fallen? Had the coal burning plant a few blocks away exploded? We ran outside and met our neighbors that had done the same. Our chimney was still standing, as was the smokestack at the power plant. Everything eerily returned to the feel of an uneventful Monday morning.

Soon the news feed reported an explosion at the Cedar Falls Utilities substation on the edge of town, 2-1/2 miles from our house. Workers had been inside doing routine maintenance. Remarkably no one was injured. It was a disaster that wasn't. I biked over there this week to draw the rubble with the pastoral Iowa farmland beyond.

On the mainland, not too far from Beals Island where we stayed for 10 days, the hamlet of Columbia Falls has the Pleasant River flowing through it. There used to be a dam here, but it was removed in order to once again allow wild Atlantic salmon to spawn upstream. August 31, 2014

Glad I had my sketchbook kit with me. While waiting for the tow truck to take our broken down car, I took the opportunity to sketch.

I believe this is behind a restaurant with its orange tents. It is right next door to a wall that was painted on with a mural of a woman.

We went into the Saguaro National Park almost everyday of our weeklong stay in Tucson. 16 years ago was the last time I was in the Sonoran Desert. The forms of the saguaro cactus were so exciting to draw. The air was so clear, one could see far. April 17, 2013

It's only Experiment Day again here at id-iom! This time we've gone and got our grubby little mitts on a big bottle of liquid latex. It's funny what can happen when you're at the art shop. Let's just leave it at that. Rather than having any highfalutin ideas we just got stuck in on some small wooden pieces to see where the process would lead us. After painting and applying latex they then had to be left for a full day for the latex to dry. Then comes the fun part of peeling the latex off and seeing what abstract creation has been produced. I like the fact they look a bit like psychedelic maps of imagined worlds.

Anyway, they're robust, pocket-sized (at 17 x 12 cm) and super practical for those times when you really need to have an abstract piece of art immediately to hand. Plus the pretty colours are soothing. So they've pretty much got it all. Drop us a line if you need one in your pocket or they'll be making their way to our website in due course (www.id-iom.com).

Cheers
