"Nachtgedanken" (Nocturnal thoughts) is one of the best-known poems by the German writer Heinrich Heine (1792-1856), written in exile in Paris and published as the final poem in the 1844 volume "Zeitgedichte" (Contemporary poems).
The opening verse in particular became famous:
If I think of Germany in the night,
Then I am deprived of sleep,
I can no longer close my eyes,
And my hot tears flow.

Technical note: his is one of my first attempts at using shift optics to avoid plunging lines in a still life. So far (since I have really become aware of the problem) I have generally tried in my still lifes to avoid relatively tall objects with parallel edges or at most to place any such object exactly in the axis of symmetry. Shifting made it possible to place the camera high enough to see some of the contents of the cup and jug without the bottle in the right foreground tilting off to the side. The picture was taken with an old OM Zuiko 2/35mm and a Tilt&Shift adapter made by Kipon.

Because the secretary is still struggling to open the damn coconut, he peels an orange in between, for which he has the appropriate tool at hand. (The Solingen pocket knife is a good hundred years old.)

Shot so many of this tiny Gerber pocket knife I had real difficulty in choosing which to put out. This one seemed a happy medium as quite a few were very abstract. I did a lit set up for the initial series but this one I shot on the arm of my sofa with the knife on the back of my iPhone!
HMM!

"A Small Town in Germany" was the first novel by Le Carré that Secretary read in original English - a great, but truly tough school. The paperback, already old and worn at that time, bears the stamp of a used bookstore in San Clemente, California, where Secretary spent a few weeks after finishing high school. He purchased the book for $2.95. Today it is a small souvenir of that time.

“Don’t overdo with packing for this little trip. You will want to have some space left for your travel souvenirs – and, by the way, it’s only around the world after all…”

If it comes to longlife and sharpness then there is Victorinox the best choice you can make!
Victorinox is a knife manufacturer and watchmaker based in the town of Ibach, in the Canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. It is well known for its Swiss Army knives. The Swiss Army knives made by Victorinox are made of a proprietary blend steel from Germany and France. Since its acquisition of rival Wenger in 2005, it has become the sole supplier of multi-purpose knives to the Swiss army. It is the biggest manufacturer of pocket knives in the world; in addition, the company licenses its logo for watches, apparel, and travel gear.

An Otter "Mercator" knife on a piece of mossy wood.
The "Mercator" knives were originally produced since 1867 as allround pocket knives by a company named Heinrich Kaufmann & Söhne, Indiawerk in the town of Solingen. The knife name "Mercator" is the Latin version of the German word "Kaufmann" (family name of the company founder) and was chosen for marketing reasons. The simple and rugged design is therefore well over 150 years old, with a folded steel handle and a 9 cm long lockback blade.
Due to its ruggedness and affordability the knife became rather popular with German troops in WW I and WW II, but it was never officially issued.
After WW II the knife also gained some popularity and abundance in the US because returning soldiers brought them home as war souvenirs. This in turn led there to the wrong belief those knives were official army issue.
Since 1995 the knives are produced by Otter-Messer, also in Solingen, a knife maker with a history dating back to 1840. The town of Solingen itself, recognizable by its nickname Klingenstadt (Blade City), has been the heart of the European blades and cutlery industry since the Middle Ages. Around 90 percent of the entire German knife, scissors and cutlery industry is based in Solingen.

A "Remove before flight" tag, as used on pitot tube covers, static port plugs, gust locks and all the other things one does not want on one's airplane when leaving the ground, attached to an Otter "Mercator" folding knife.

A new week has started and the tiny little helpers of little world are back to work. Right now this brilliant victorinox pocketknife needs some maintenance from them. After the use of some oil he is checking if the can opener works smooth enough to pass the quality control :)

On Munich's Fröttmaninger Heide one blade from Portugal in the southwest of Europe meets another from Finland in the northeast of Europe. There's about 3,400 km great circle distance between the locations of the two knife makers - and Munich is not on that great circle.... 😁.
The Finnish blade is a Wood Jewel "Vuolu 10", the Portuguese blade is a José da Cruz "Merendeira".

Pretty nice theme for this week. We do have so much things with teeth in our household so it wasn`t too difficult to find some items that would match. Just had 1 hour before i had to go out for shopping so can cook myself a little lunch. Quick and dirty i went for this one. Hope you enjoy it anyways.
