Following the track back towards the saddle of Slieve Loughshannagh and Carn Mountain, I looked behind myskef and noticed that the mist had lifted showing Doan and Loughshannagh. Shot using the native iOS camera app on iPhone 11 Pro.
This had to be one of the prettier sunrise I had seen in quite awhile. And my first at this location. We had arrived at about 4:00 a.m. to shoot the Milky Way and pretty much did up until the sun came up. We began scrambling from our Milky Way positions as began to see color starting to show. This was the place that I ended up at initially because of this patterned foreground. I thought this horse shoe shape showed another unique sandstone shaped that is throughout this whole area. This photo was taken May 17, 2017 on a remote mesa on the northern Paria Plateau where few people tread. It was my third expedition to explore sites beyond the well-known places on the plateau, and the first occasion for 3 all-day solo hikes that yielded noteworthy discoveries, like Secret Pocket, Sky Pocket and the Domes of the Gnomes. I've since returned each year and I continue to find new things. I hope to be back in May 2022 and maybe again in October.
This view, taken above Sky Pocket, looks south down the east wall of the Forked Tongue Ridge toward my starting point which is behind that standalone hill I call Anvil Butte. Beyond that is the butte with Hole-in-the-Rock Arch. Having completed the exciting Wrather Recon to Domes of the Gnomes the previous day, I returned from this hike feeling really pumped about what I had seen so far, which exceeded my expectations. The next day would be even better when I discovered Secret Pocket. A year later, in 2018, I returned to find the Lost City and other dramatic features.

The plateau, surrounded by steep cliffs on 3 sides, is in northern Arizona near the Utah state line. Its 400 square miles require 4-wheel-drive to reach and there are no services, so not many go up there. Fewer still hike into the backcountry.
Note: Paria rhymes with Maria. It's from an Indian word meaning "muddy water" (literally the case in the Paria River).
Disclaimer: I don't claim to be the first to have seen these sites. Indians and ranchers undoubtedly knew about them, but left no records. Others like Michael Kelsey and Steve Dodson have explored the plateau extensively, but apparently not where I hiked. I only claim "new discoveries" where there are no written descriptions or photos to be found on the internet prior to mine. I've also asked the BLM about them but have never gotten a firm answer that any ranger has been to them.

B 161 in IC 1396. 146 minutes integration time. I had intended to image the elephant trunk that's also within IC 1396 but only armed with a copy of Sky & Telescope's Pocket Sky Atlas (Cartes du Ciel didn't help either) in a dark corner of Wiltshire (Summerlands Campsite) B 161 seemed the right choice. The top of the elephant trunk can be seen poking its nose just into the frame; just a couple more imaging sessions in that region of the sky and I should have the makings of a fine mosaic!

Stunning Sunrise
📍Al Re'eth/Jazan/southwest of Saudi Arabia.
Seen during a short visit to the Andalusian city of Sevilla: another Sevilla light pocket, this one in the Calle Álvarez Quintero.
One does not usually hunt galaxies in the little dipper. In Sky & Telescope’s Pocket Sky Atlas, which I often use in the field, NGC 6217 is the only galaxy shown in the entire constellation. At a magnitude of 11.2 and because of its small size 2.2’ by 1.6’ it would likely go unnoticed by amateur astronomers if not listed as one of the Herschel 400 deep sky objects.
NGC 6217 is also listed in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (Arp 185) due to narrow filaments (tails of stars and gas) extending from the galaxy because of an interaction with another galaxy in its recent past.
With my 110mm refractor from a local park, I need to use a light enhancement device attached to the eyepiece to find it. After a few minutes looking at NGC 6217, I could sense the center bar at the galaxy's core, but no additional detail could be made out. The narrow filaments that made it an Arp object were well beyond what my small refractor could see.
