When the opportunity for a potential beautiful sunset image coincides with my days off from work, I do my best to make it out to the coast. On this January day, all the weather forecast models promised a colorful sunset in the area of Cape Disappointment State Park (located along the southwest tip of Washington State near Illwaco).
It was nearly high tide as I drove my Jeep down the beach, and after crossing several small streams, I drove as far south as I could go until I reached Beards Hollow. I had the entire beach to myself nearly an hour before sunset.
As the sun was setting, it beautifully illuminated the clouds from below as well as the the incoming waters of the high tide. With such stark contrast, the trees and cliffs of North Head were silhouetted against the sunset skies. Indeed, it was a very beautiful and peaceful winter night at the beach.
A photograph of the southern span of the Deception Pass Bridge looking west at sunrise. I found this vantage point while parked on Pass Island (between the two spans) and hiking down the rocky cliffs just above the waters edge.

“Sunset, Sunrise Mono Lake”
Just back in the gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. It was so nice to be in shorts and t-shirts again and experience some nice warm sunshine! I had another great group of students, and I gave them one heck of a tour of Death Valley and the Alabama Hills. They all did a great job learning and using my Old-School, All-In-Camera Techniques. I have a ton of new images to show from this trip, but I decided to show my very last shooting day first. After class, I visited the amazing Eureka Dunes deep in the Death Valley Back County and I have some epic shots to show from that location. Heading out from there we made it to Mono Lake just in time to capture the very best sunset I have ever seen on this unique Lake. The very high salt content of mono Lake creates these strange formations call Tufa’s. I love these fascinating formations and finally on my 5th visit to the area I got the Gallery Shots I have been looking for. That was followed up by an excellent sunrise, then it was a two-day drive to get back home. Lots more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

Garry oak, Quercus garryana, is a beautiful, white oak tree native to the Pacific Coast of North America. They are a hardened, drought tolerant tree, disease resistant tree that grow slowly, but steadily. Talk about a tree with a character! Most Garry oaks have a single trunk. But what I think is cool about this tree is that their branches will naturally take sharp twists or even corkscrew-like turns as the tree grows.
Multnomah Falls at 602ft is the tallest of Oregon's many waterfalls - so tall that I couldn't get both ends in the photo!
Before the Snow
These bright sunny mornings full of color have got me ready for growth, green, moss, and basically everything that comes once the freeze and snow has retreated.
Whenever I’m deep under the cover of forest, these are the scenes I look for. Growth springing from the remains of old trees. Signs of the circle of life.
