I have tried repeatedly to get a picture of clouds and sun on the hills on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge just west of The Dalles. I may have come close to getting it right this time. I took the picture from the Oregon side.

Gaia and I were out and about on Halloween, trying in vain to catch a sunrise at one of Oregon’s spectacular, and on that day, packed with people viewpoints near Sandy. One of the bastards parked across the entrance to the parking lot at the viewpoint, and very few of the photographers were wearing masks, despite the worsening pandemic. We didn’t stop. Instead, we continued down into the Powell Valley, following the sun into the valley fog. When we made it to Lusted Road (my favorite road name in the area), the sun poked out of the mist, and I found a place to park, and took a few pictures, and flavored this one with the Orton Effect.

I spent al little time at Little Zigzag Creek this morning, before the temperature hit 100º. There was occasional cloud cover interspersed with brillient sunlight mingling with the trees. It was a good day to be on the slopes of Mount Hood.
I have been having trouble printing pictures lately. I have to lighten them up quite a but from how they first look, despite having calibrated my printer, and, I thought, my monitor, (although I had to do it based on how my prints look. Well, I finally got my ColorMunki working properly. It turns out that my computer does not like special characters in the file names of the icc profiles. I removed the underscore in the name, and it worked flawlessly. Not I can print with wild abandon.

Doctor: "Do you think the camera may have something to do with that, and not with your eyes?"
Patient: "There's too much spray to open my eyes unless I'm looking through the camera. The damn place is windy, and right on the ocean."
Doctor: "Your eyes are open now. Do you see spots?"

2018 was a banner year for my photography. I was living in the Columbia Gorge, I was starting to het the hang of digital cameras, and it was a dramatic Autumn that year. I had a camera at the ready daily.
I love it when a river gets quiet, and still. On rare occasions in the Eastern Columbia Gorge, the river adopts a mirror sheen, and reflects the semi-arid hillsides, and anything else that sits in the water, like a sternwheeler.

I happened past Ruthton Point in Hood River, Oregon as a rare break in the clouds opened up to the west. Sunlight flooded the Columbia Gorge lke water breaking through a dam, and a rainbow appeared behind me as I fought to keep the driving rain off of the lens. I managed to get it dry enough for one of the 20 or so pictures I took.

This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. I can't believe it took me this long to go there.
I have seen this referred to as Little Zigzag Creek and Little Zigzag river at various places. The map says it's a river. Hiking websites call it a creek.

I've been to Florence, Oregon once. It was in 2000. I drove down there on a lark, and took some pictiures of this bridge, and I went to Coos Bay to take pictures of the dunes. I had only one lens for my Hasselblad at the time, so I made the best of it.

We spent a day on the Oregon Coast in early July, and managed to stick around for the sunset. Due to having to get up early for work, my bedtime is 9:00. The sunset finally let up at about 9:30, and we still had a 2 hour trip home. I think it was worth it.

We drove out to Cape Disappointment to get some lighthouse pictures, and I stumbled onto the location I was looking for that last couple times I was there. There were no big waves, as the King Tide was on it's last pawn, and the waves weren't very big. Still, I took a few pictures, and made plans to go back again when the circumstances are right.
I am testing a new developer, which is Photographers Formulary FA-1027. It is supposed to be superior to D76, and yeild exquisite negarives. So far, I like what I see. The only post processing I had to do to this negative was set the levels.

Mosier, Oregon sits at a low point in a fold in the Earth's crust. It's quite the geological wonder. At this spot, just west of the town, the anticline splits into three tiers. I took this from about a mile away using a really long lens.

I have tried many times to get a good picture with the Spouting Horns at Depoe Bay. The Spouting Horns are holes in the rocky shoreline that lead to a short tunnel that opens to the ocean. At high tide, the waves build until a bigger one comes along, and hits that tunnel with force, and then water spouts from the holes. The sun happened to be at the right place to form a rainbow when I took this.

Gaia and I were out at the coast on Sunday to see if we could catch a sunset. We did. I haven't done many sunsets or sunrises lately. The pandemic has taken much of the wind out of my sails when it comes to being out in public. Way too many people still aren't paying attention to the guidelines, and it's dangerous for Gaia to be around people like that, even outdoors. So, everyone, please enable everyone, including folks with depressed immune systems, to enjoy the outdoors by masking up when near anyone not in your immediate household, and keep your distance. People can be infected when oudoors. To those of you who mask up, and follow the state's guidelines: Thank you very much. Your effors are much appreciated.

I saw these ships out on the river as I was leaving to go home. I stopped, and took some pictures, and two young women strolled up and asked about what the pylons were there for. I explained that they are the remains of canneries that used to line the river at Astoria. Then they asked about my photography. They seemed very pleasant to talk to, and showed a genuine interest in what I was doing. As they were about to continue on their way, one of them said, "Oh, and that's a nice sunset."
I turned to the west to see the beginnings of what turned out to be a spectacular sunset. The rest is history. I posted the sunset shot earlier.

One of my favorite places: Horsethief Butte, Washington in the Eastern Columbia Gorge.
I have been going back and forth on whether to use a watermark on my photographs. I have changed it a couple of times, and removed it completely a couple of times. I seem to always come back to the one I used on this one. If someone is going to steal my picture, I want them to at least have to do some work to remove the watermark before displaying it.

I had the Lensbabies out for an afternoon on the town in Hood River today. I was looking for interesting compositions while we stopped at one of the downtown shops, and then got something to eat in the Heights. The downtown restaurants were mostly closed. I thought that it may have been due to the pandemic, but I found out later that there was a gas outage the affected a major portion of town. I didn't spend a lot of time out with the camera, so I only got this one image in town. I got a few more near Rowena later on.

I thought that there would be a good chance at a sunrise this morning, so I packed up the cameras, and headed for Crown Point. The road getting there was a bit, shall we say, mobile, because there have been landslides in the area, and a certain section of the road just before Crown Point is slowly sliding down the hillside a few inces a year, but other than that, it isn't a too harrowing drive. The sunrise did not disappoint. I present it here as I saw it.

I went to Moulton Falls this Fall for the first time. I intend to go back. I battles strong sunlight coming almost directly at the lens, and every picture has a little flare on it. Next time, I'm going to pick a cloudy day.

Gaia and I were in The Dalles to have some work done on the car, and they gave me a rental.
So...
We drove out to find a place I haven't been to in 13 years. I was looking for a road with a sign that read "Harmony". That turned out to be Hay Canyon Road. It's a road bespckled with cattle and sagebrush, and is one of those places that oozes with western charm. I'm reading a book written by a homesteader / rancher from eastern Oregon, so I also understand (and in reality, I've understood for a long time) that it oozes with hardscrabble, holding on by your fingernails semi-arid farming. My hat is off to those people.

The western forests around Mt Hood are some of the mossiest , ferniest places in the world. Gaia and I were exploring today, looking at places to photograph, and we came across the Barlow Wayside Park. Many of you already know if you have followed my work for more than a few years that I am an infrastructure geek. I love bridges, roads, and buildings, but only if they are old, and preferrably historic. I have posted about the Historic Columbia River Highway, the Saint Johns Bridge, the Hood River Hotel, and places like those for years. One historical roar that I have been curious about, but have not been able to really sink my teeth into, is the Barlow Road. It was part of the Oregon Trail, and parts of it still exist. I drove on two sections of it today, and the second section made no sense based on where the first section was. So... It's time to look at the original route, and see how it fits together, and do some more exploring in the area.
There is a creek called Little Joe Creek that runs through this area, but it's not of much interest at this spot. The trees, with their wavy, moss covered branches are much more interesting. That said, I think I'm going to go back and see if the creek has some more interesting things to show.
I took some 8x10 black and whites there too, so hopefully I will be able to post those after I develop them.

We went out to the Lower Deschutes River Back Country Byway for the first time in a few years. I always get there shortly before I have to go home, though. At some point, I will have to go early. The light was interesting because a sizeable storm was coming. The sun was setting, so the intensity was fleeting. It was windy too. I was hoping that a train would thunder by, but no such luck.

The wind was clocked at 85 mph at one point, and the icy chill stung my face, but I got a few pictures, and even hiked up to the top of the falls where I took this picture. There's a little bonus waterfall just above the famous one.
