The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 17th of January is "plush toys", which is the perfect theme for me, as I have a lovely collection of soft plush bears who quite enjoy being in front of my camera and under my lens. Both made by Merrythought Bears in Ironbridge, Shropshire, Edgar and Benjamin are the two latest additions to my ever burgeoning bear family. I hope you like my choice of bears for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.
This beautiful Willow Pattern nursery tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1920s. It features four cups and saucers as well as a tea pot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with the Willow Pattern in blue, just like the life-size equivalent. It has two sister sets: a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children’s tea sets and a faerie tale set from the 1930s Shell China Company faerie tale tea set that I have built up from various sellers over time.
Handmade at Merrythought in England from warm-gold tousled mohair plush, Edgar is a cheerful companion who has terracotta pure cotton velvet paws, and wears a delightful floral cotton bow tie. He is number 2 of a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Benjamin is made by Merrythought in England too. A friendly character, he has been handmade from soft, caramel-coloured mohair plush featuring a chocolate-coloured base that beautifully complements his pure wool felt paws. He wears a traditional, satin-lined waistcoat made from the finest British tweed and secured with brass studs. He is number 110 of a limited worldwide edition of 150.

Once, there was a bear. Not a real bear. Well, that isn't quite true either. It was a plush bear. A Teddy Bear, just as real and squeezable as a pillow. But it wasn't a bear of flesh and blood. Rather, a bear of fabric and stuffing.
The bear's name was not Teddy. As everyone could surmise, it's name was 'NOT'. This was monogrammed on the fluffy chest.
Not was not a huggable bear. Oh, it was soft enough but it had a smell. An odd smell that no one seemed to be able to quite describe, but all agreed was unpleasant.
And, not unpleasant in the typical way of smells. In fact, the offense wasn't to the nose, but to the heart. A sudden intense fear would often arrive in those who touched Not. Almost everyone would quickly recoil. Almost. But, for others, a very few actually, they wanted to hold Not tight.
A man that everyone knew as Mutter was seen holding Not tight, and weeping. Not many months later Mutter was seen dragged from his rotting home by officers, where they found unspeakable horrors.
Another time a woman, smartly dressed and with a perpetual smile, was spotted holding Not tight to her bosom, gently rocking, and singing a halting, sobbing lullaby. Some weeks later the woman perished while on a horrific public rampage.
Will you hug Not? He's so inviting. Don't mind the smell, and don't be afraid.
Will you hold him tight? Not has many things to tell you, if you are of that special mind to hear.
And you will discover that, in his own little way, Not is indeed a bear of flesh. And blood.

Goodness! Even reading can be tiring, especially when you are a bear like Malachi who only stands six centimetres high! He has been reading some of my classic antiquarian books of faerie tales, but now it’s time to stop, find a cosy nook or pleasant outcrop amongst the books and lay out a terribly civilised elevenses of English Breakfast tea with milk and sugar and a selection of French made Schoof's Biscuits.
The theme for “Looking close… on Friday” is “stuffed toys”. Who better to demonstrate this in a macro fashion than my little Malachi hand-made 1:12 dolls’ miniature plush bear?
Malachi is a recent, and unexpected, addition to my bear family. I acquired him in mid-March from a wonderful Melbourne stalwart toy shop: Dafel Dolls and Bears, when I went looking for a present for one of my goddaughters. Malachi is designed by Mary and hand-made by Wendy Joy in Australia. He has articulated arms and legs, and an extremely sweet face. Malachi was the name he came with, written by hand on his little tag.
Malachi is taking tea from a 1:12 miniature tea set, which is hand painted and gilded and is based on a Royal Doulton design from the Edwardian era. He has a fine selection of Schoof's Biscuits manufactured in Bourges, France in his tin. If you look closely there is even a little teddy bear biscuit! All the biscuits, like the tin and tea set are artisan made 1:12 miniatures from my own collection.
The teapot is two and a half centimetres in height, the milk jug two centimetres in height, the sugar bowl one and half centimetres in height, the plate and saucer 2 centimetres in diameter, the teacup one a half centimetres in diameter, the teaspoon two centimetres in length ad the biscuit tin two centimetres in diameter.
Dafel Dolls and Bears history dates back to 1941 when founder Ada Schmit opened the shop to counter the shortage of toys available for children during the war. The shop, which also encompasses a doll and bear hospital and a dressing service, is still a family affair, run by mother and daughter Pauline Seaton and Lisa Brener. Located for 77 years in Melbourne’s iconic Block Arcade, Dafel Dolls and Bears relocated in 2018 to the end of Howey Place, a light filled arcade just a short stroll from their former original premises.

I recently made a similar bear as a custom order for one of my favorite customers and I enjoyed so much making that type of embroidery that I decided to make a new one in this beautiful sea foam/mint felt color.
What I like the most in doing what I do is paring colors together and I really got inspired by the color combos I chose for the two sides of this little plush pillow.
The embroidery style itself was inspired by a research I made with my son on tribal motifs found on totem poles and other artifacts.
I did not make a sketch at all for the design, I just picked the different color thread I wanted to use and started to "free form" embroider each side.
This little plush bear pillow is all hand sewn and made with much love and attention to details.
It measures 11" wide by 7.5" high.
