Technically known as shaft spillways but affectionately known as plug holes, the drains were designed to regulate water levels in the reservoir by letting out water when the reservoir became full after prolonged wet spells.
The water is carried away down tunnels through the dam to the River Derwent downstream.
Each plug hole has a diameter of 24m (78ft) and the drop from the exit point to the floor of the tunnel below is 20m (66ft).
These shaft spillways have been nicknamed bellmouth or morning glory - after the flower - spillways.

This pipe plug is a part of the underground plumbing system of a long extinct Volcano, revealed by erosion, more pipes from the same system are visible in the back. Interestingly, the lava raising up is not mixed thoroughly and composed two distinct types, one dark, the other light. These pipes feed a large volcano, most likely a cone like stratovolcano. The red sandstone of the Comb Ridge monocline stretches across the background.

This weeks Macro Monday's theme is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
As many of these conveyances are powered by internal combustion engines, I thought a Spark Plug would be appropriate.
Of course it would have to be sparking.
Best viewed large.
HMM.
P.S.
This is a real spark recorded in this 2.5 second exposure. The spark plug was connected to a neon sign transformer that produced a continuous spark that you see here.
Wetlands are a distinct ecosystem that benefit people through ecosystem services that include water purification, groundwater replenishment, stabilization of shorelines and storm protection, water storage and flood control, processing of carbon (carbon fixation, decomposition and sequestration), other nutrients and pollutants, and support of plants and animals. Put bluntly, no wetlands, no sustainable life for humans.

CP 422 rips thru Palgrave with a rescue crew at the helm and a pair of magnetic ditchlights slapped on. A rare moment of delays rendering an otherwise midnight train into a morning wonder. Not long after they would find another delay after breaking a knuckle just outside of Toronto's Agincourt yard.

The Pontsticill reservoir 'Plug hole' with water just about overflowing on a grey and misty morning a couple of days ago. Ponsticill is a large reservoir on the river Taf Fechan lying partly in the county of Powys and partly within the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. For those of you who are interested in this sort of thing the reservoir dam is a 110 ft high embankment has, since its completion in 1927, been holding back 15,400 megalitres of water for supply to industry and population of south Wales.
A good way I know
to find happiness, is to
not bore a hole to fit the plug.

Mud plugging, or
sporting trials, is an off-road motor-sport that involves driving a specialised vehicle through steep, muddy courses, prioritising skill and control over speed.
In this case speed is far less important than staying upright.
I bet he wished he had stayed on the roadway.
