Desde que me explicaron por primera vez el fenómeno natural de los tapones volcánicos (como en las fotos), me ha fascinado el proceso y el tiempo transcurrido / la causalidad de la erosión, durante milenios.
Los tapones se forman cuando el magma fundido se solidifica en el cuello de un volcán activo. Con el tiempo, los agentes de la erosión; el viento, la lluvia y la abrasión desgastan los sedimentos circundantes más blandos del cono volcánico, dejando el tapón duro.
Con frecuencia, los despojos de la erosión se pueden ver cayendo en cascada, como los contrafuertes de una iglesia.
¿El tiempo que se tarda en erosionar, digamos, un centímetro, desde la parte superior de la roca endurecida? Fascinante.

Since the natural phenomenon of volcanic plugs (as in the photos), was first explained to me, I have been fascinated by the process, & with the elapsed time / causation of erosion, over millennia.
Plugs are formed when molten magma solidifies in the neck of an active volcano. Over time, the agents of erosion; wind, rain and scouring, wears the softer surrounding sediments of the volcanic cone away, leaving the hard plug.
Frequently, the spoils of the erosion can be seen cascading downwards, like buttresses on a church.

Then there is the unanswerable question: How tall was it in the first place? Ditto 'normal' mountains.

Some years ago I had to go to Athens for work and had some time to spare to see the sights. In the area around the Acropolis there were many damaged statues and several heads like this. While some statues had the heads integrated with the trunk some had a hole to receive a head such as this! So interchangeable heads should the face go in or out of fashion?????

These Petunia plants come to the nursery as plugs in trays. They have to be 'popped' out of the trays to be potted on. They are pushed from the plugs and gently tipped onto a clean surface so as not to damage them then potted up asap.

When leaving Burlington, VT we went through Shelburne, VT which is a suburb that has a Volunteer Fire Department.
They had erected a piece of public art made from 11-12 full sized fire plugs.
According to "Roadside America" it originally was made to look like a "Jack" which is a childs game toy. As years passed, additional fire plugs were added, resulting in the one in the picture.
I thought it was an ingenious way to use old fire plugs. I haven't seen anything like this previously.
