“It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.” ~ Leo Buscaglia (author, educator)

My 5-year old son is a Star Wars fan. He also loves playing with a variety of construction toys, but his favourite is Lego. Whenever he receives a new Lego set, he first builds it according to its instructions. After it is built, it stays that way for a few days. Then he takes them apart to...

Our little cousins had surgery recently. As a home coming gift for him and his siblings we assembled a hospital homecoming gift.

Kids are stellar in play based learning. Kids understand the basics if what's happening to them and these ideas are solidified in play.

Our Homecoming from the Hospital Kit:

- A new Elmo doll

- Elmo wrapped in a stretchy piece of bandage (from home)

- a bandaid on the bandage

- a box / container for our Doctor supplies: a small sponge square, an empty travel size shampoo container (which we use in the tub so we have plenty), a small notebook for writing down symptoms and a pen, get better stickers, pill bottle, bandaid box with 5 real bandages, and a small cup for water or syrup sipping.

Some parents feel children shouldn't open pill bottles, we advocate for teaching responsibility and never playing with real syrups and medicines. Also, parental supervision should be included so the blue bandage which is removable doesn't go around a toddlers neck.

Of course my kids made a handmade get well card too. See more at areyousureaboutthatblog.blogspot.com

We don't feel spending loads of cash is necessary to make fun, heartfelt gifts.

There are a gazillion toys out there in the market. It ranges from popular character themed toys to toys that move, make sounds, emit light. There are lots of fancy toys. Musical toys. Remote control toys. Trains. Trucks. Cars. Dolls. And I can go on and on. We all spend massive amounts of money...

Parents can make play a priority for their children through providing a variety of opportunities and materials to support play.

Medieval Times, dressing up in our knights costume and kings and queens. We didn't have to buy their crowns because we brought our own costumes. Play based learning in action. After the tournament my sons had a better concept of what knights did, how they fought, jousting and even specialty of animal messengers (owls). So the fighting continued at home with full on regalia costumes. Mom was the queen of course!

Mildred Parten's classic six stages of social play include parallel, unoccupied, onlooker (by-stander), cooperative, and associative play.

Medieval Times, dressing up in our knights costume and kings and queens. We didn't have to buy their crowns because we brought our own costumes. This is a great example of play based learning as my sons continued for days (before and) after competing at home as knights in tournaments, riding horses (sticks), and dressing up in full on costume with shields and swords. Including homemade shields.

The play continued for days and days at home. Medieval Times, dressing up in our knights costume and kings and queens. We didn't have to buy their crowns because we brought our own costumes. Here young son and older son are knights jousting for the right to a new horse (the bear in the middle of the playroom).

This is the underside of our coffee table. Yes, in the living room a real wood coffee table. When guests come over they have no idea why the kids lie underneath the table playing for long stretches of time.... we hammered and screwed in (with moms help) real nails, washers, eye hooks, misc. plastic pieces and other hardware. To add to the adventure, my younger son received a head lamp for Christmas - it was his favorite gift for use in the equipment room.
