Plastering process after retrofit
Putalibazar Municipality-13,Baun Dada, has completed retrofitting of his house with his own effort and technical support from DLPIU-Building.The house is a Two storey Load Bearing Stone in Mud mortar Masonary (SMM) house. He has received the first tranche of Government retrofit grant i.e. Rs 50,000 and recommended for the second tranche. He is probably the first man in 18 districts and definitely the first retrofit beneficiary in Syangja district who has completed retrofitting of house without the Partner Organization (POs) support. The method used for retrofitting is chicken wire mesh jacketing. The total cost of retrofitting is 3 lakhs and 32 thousands of which materials cost was Rs 2 lakh 32 thousand and 1 lakhs was spent in trained masons(earthquake resilient building construction). Before retrofitting the house some of the parts like heavy gable wall was dismantled and the openings in the upper storey was closed. Now,there are three rooms in the lower storey and one room in the upper storey which will be used for storing grains. The retrofitting of the house was completed in 28 days.Mr. Thapa will be living with his 7 family members in the retrofitted house.

The ‘rule of thumb’ in construction technology is: ‘low construction costs deliver high running and maintenance costs’ or ‘high construction costs deliver low maintenance and running costs.’ By combining the traditional cane, reed and clay construction technology, and the relatively new coiled circuit under floor heating system, we have achieved both low construction costs and low maintenance and heating costs – without compromising the structural integrity of the home. We save circa 40% on construction costs and up to 75% on heating costs.
Cane-reed houses are double cheaper than houses built from bricks, clay or concrete blocks.
I went to Guildford today for a bit of urban exploring, and passed this shop. I didn't take a photo straight away, but it kept sticking in my mind. A plastering and decorating shop with white footprints around it that had cracking plaster on its walls was just too good to forget. So I came back about an hour later to take a pic.
Lining up to take the shot, I heard the sirens of a police car coming closer along the road. Not wanting them to shoot past and ruin the shot, I began to lower the camera just in time to see the cop car flying past.
What amazed me, though, was seeing the policeman in the passenger seat looking towards me and covering up his face in case I took a photo of him as they drove past at high speed. I guess I found it ironic that the UK is probably the biggest surveillance society in the world where citizens are not expected to be able to hide, and yet the police officer wanted to hide his identity from my camera.
It's just a strip of beading nailed onto a stick, it's used sort of like a potato masher to get the lumps out of the plaster mix
