This are media experiments for my A2 project - development for my work with plaster and Islamic geometric patterns. Here I've two slabs of plaster in shapes taken from a basic geometric pattern. The colours are taken from my earlier piece of Women in Veils inspired by Alex Cherry. Studying the concept of coverage I derived the concept of reflection. To interpret this I use mirror in place of some of the geometric patterns in my work. Here I express fabric in three ways. From left:
On the first slab the impression of fabric is portrayed through the use of collage crepe paper on the flat surface. I used warm colours red and orange aiming to not overcrowd the colours in the slab. The second slab consists of fabric drawn onto the flat surface in chalk and charcoal. This gave it a similar effect to resist. The third one emphasises the form of fabric through relief areas of plaster.
To create the stained glass effect for the geometric pattern I used dyed fiberglass. The colours of these geometric patterns are deliberately made to compliment the other colours - taken from my studies of Women in Veils.
Pre puchase pic of crafts room (old upstairs kitchen). Here you can see how bad the plaster is. It was much worse in many parts of the house if you can believe it. Oh the time I could have saved had I not needed to rip it out all of the walls.....The only bright side to having to replace all of the walls is 1) there are no cracks and/or imperfections to patch 2)they can be fully insulated with R-13 and vapor barrier 3) I get a chance to see if there is any rotted wood. Still it would have been nice if the walls were in decent shape. it would have saved lots of mess and I could have been done with things much sooner. Tearing out 12 rooms full of plaster/lathe is a lot of nasty, dirty, hard work. Re-stuffing the walls with R-13 and putting up vapor barrier and sheetrock is hard work too.
I gave up and never finished this piece so I just stuck it in the ground to watch it crumble from the mositure. I obviously never finished the patina and msot fo it was going to be covered over with bark so that it would look like a cancerous machine growing out of a tree.

Plaster sculpture finished with a bronze acrylic paint. This is a remodelling of the ‘Bronze Bunny’ I did for the ’21 Day Flickr Challenge’ (theme ‘Artistry’).
