Rush hour in Ottawa. People work and live for their cars, without ever fully realizing the full personal costs, let alone the social or environmental ones. In many urban situations, cars are less convenient and ultimately slower than walking, biking or transit – if you know the tricks. We've been sold a bill of goods! Are you addicted to cars? Car-freedom links, information, organizations: Car-freedom Car free (2) (3) | Car-free Living (facebook group)
Avoid big box malls! They're bad for local business and employment, often using poor labour practices and illegal "predatory pricing". They also increase dependency on cars, increase urban sprawl and congestion, and are bad for pedestrians, cyclists, seniors and public transit. They transfer hidden costs from the store onto the consumer and community. The result is that products seem cheaper – but we all end up paying in other ways. The good news: there are much better altenatives – and people in smart communities are achieving them. In the links below you'll find information on how and why to fight big box developments, and examples of communities that have successfully blocked them.

Organic veggie gardens at the SunRun Centre, northeast of Toronto, now under new ownership as Russet House Farm. The original owners, Milt and Barb Wallace, are now retired in Toronto. SunRun/Russet House is an off-the-grid organic farm and environmental education centre. Note the wind turbine. The solar panels are not in view in this picture. I wwoofed here when it was still under Milt and Barb's ownership, and the following year worked as an intern for the whole summer.
Milt & Barb also founded the Ecovillage Network of Canada in 1997 (see also the Community Page and this Canadian directory of ecovillages and intentional communities for background and context.

Most city people think farms are flat and boring – kind of what you see from the highway at 100kph, on your way to somewhere else. They're wrong! Anyone who thinks this has never spent more than a few minutes on a farm. As you can see from this photo, farms are hard to stereotype. The lifestyle and work is much more diverse and interesting than what most city people experience.
This is just one photo of a Wwoof host in Canada. Wwoofing is an amazing way to spend time on organic farms and gardens anywhere in the world. Yes, there can be a lot of hard work, depending on the economics of the farm and the time of year. But especially for someone from the city, at the same time it's an amazing vacation. Click here to learn more about Wwoofing. It includes links to Wwoof Canada and others.
Note: "Wwoofing" tends to imply relatively short-term work-stays, from a few days to a few weeks, although some Wwoof hosts also are great places to intern or apprentice for the whole season. Other websites that focus more on month-long or season-long internships, apprenticeships, work-stays and jobs: GoodWork Green Jobs, PlanetVolunteer Canada, SOIL Canada, CRAFT Ontario, ACORN (Atlantic Canada), Manitoba Farm Mentorships and WWOOF (Worldwide).
Want to see more? Check out my favourites section for more photos from other flickr users of beautiful small farms and gardens around the world. Everything below the northern lights pic are photos demonstrating the beauty in small-scale, biodiverse farms around the world, as well as the farmers and wwoofers themselves.

This beautiful image belies the fact that this crop is probably genetically engineered and certainly designed for large, pesticide-ridden monocultures. Central planning anyone? Meanwhile, the tiny organic demonstration gardens nearby seem unfunded and underrepresented. At the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa. See: Family farming and

Nearby, costly billboards of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, trying to look good. Our country is turning into a corrupt oil republic, but these folks make it sound like they're doing us a favour. There's an old saying: the bigger the lie, the more people believe it. But more and more of us are waking up.

Vast tracts of Canadian forests have been clearcut, destroying ecosystems and soils that have taken thousands of years to evolve, and often leaving a wasteland. It's largely out of the public eye because logging companies leave a narrow buffer of uncut trees beside the highway. In many cases, it also makes little economic sense.

The Ecovillage at Ithaca, in the late afternoon. Photo taken in 1998 when the Ecovillage's first neighbourhood was nearing completion. It's a good example of a neighbourhood that puts healthy living before pavement and driveways. Parking is immediately adjacent, and there are easy systems to get groceries, deliveries, etc., in and out. But gracefully, this is place one place that isn't defined by cars.

A strange structure appeared some weeks ago in the gardens of the estate Frankendael along the Middenweg in Amsterdam Watergraafsmeer. Looking a bit closer it learns you that this is project called Mobiation and that this structure is named Mobi-01. The mobiation project is an experiment in minimum space/impact and maximum living - the first step being the construction and installation of the mobi-01.
Mobiation
the initial mobiators are a maverick welder/designer/builder/tattoo-artist type [hamaai] and a (almost straight-edge) vegan-cookin', mulit-faceted, neo-punk, eco-architect [campism]... given the open-house policy and a general desire to propagate the idea, in a few years, there'll be a caravan of mobiated folk wandering about the world, giving extremes example of autonomous, nomadic and low impact, creative living... [well, thats one of the many plans, at any rate - ed]. In the meantime, its a case of accumulating the wheres and wherefores, the hows and howfores, and assembling all that in an inspiring and entertaining way >>> this will form the basis of mobi-wan, the proto-type #1
