A trip up by a cable car to Hauser Kaibling plateau from Haus im Ennstal in Planai area. We then took a circular hike No43 around the mountain. The hike with spectacular panoramic views and fabulous blankets of pink Alpenrose spread over the hills on the both sides of the path. Here are few memorable shots from our adventure on that day. Dieses 180°-Panoramabild zeigt den Blick vom Ort Ramsau am Dachstein nach Süden. Im Vordergrund ist die friedliche Landschaft des "Leiten" genannten Ortsteil zu sehen, der etwa 1000m ü.A. hoch liegt, im Hintergrund erheben sich die Planai und die Schladminger Tauern mit dem Hochgolling als höchstem Gipfel (2862m) , die Teil des Alpenhauptkamms der Ostalpen sind.
Dazwischen liegt rund 300 Meter tiefer, und daher im Bild nicht sichtbar, das Ennstal und der Ort Schladming.
"Die Enns ist die Trennungslinie zwischen der kristallinen Gesteinszone der Niederen Tauern und den Nördlichen Kalkalpen. Und damit sind wir auch schon auf einen Kernpunkt der Landschaftsaussage gekommen: Auf engsten Raum treffen hier zwei Gesteinsarten aufeinander, die sich nicht nur in der Formation sehr stark unterscheiden, sondern auch in Fauna und Flora sowie in der ökologischen Funktion ausgeprägte Unterschiede aufweisen. Diesem Umstand ist wohl der besondere Reiz dieser Landschaft zu verdanken.
Während die nördlichen Kalkalpen mit dem mächtigen Dachsteinstock, der die östlichste Vergletscherung trägt, gegen das Ennstal hin mit mächtigen Wandfluchten abfällt, ziehen gegen den Alpenhauptkamm lange Täler, deren Kare viele Bergseen gleich funkelnder Edelsteine in ihrem Schoße bergen. Eine lebendige Landschaft, in der man Wasserläufe vom Ursprung des Quellgebietes über sprudelnde Wasserfälle und ungezähmte Wildbäche bis zu ihrer Einmündung in die oftmals von Menschenhand erzwungenen Flußläufe begleiten kann."
So beschreibt Toni Breitfuß in seinem "Wanderführer Dachstein-Tauern" diese wunderbare Landschaft – und ich kann ihm nur zustimmen

The path was quite narrow in places and on a steep hill too – an interesting challenge especially when you need to overtake a large group ahead of us. But what a fabulous day that was. Planai is not only the heart of Styria and Austria itself, but also lies in midst of the Schladming local mountain. The summit is at 1906 m above sea level.

Planai is one of four adjoining mountains, which includes Hauser Kaibling, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm, connected under the name Schladminger

False Helleborine or White Hellebore (Veratrum album) was in bloom in abundance along the hike. They provided an attractive foreground specially with spectacular mountain valley at the back. Planai. Gestern fand hier auf der Planai zum 23. Mal der Nachtslalom (Nightrace) statt, dem wieder etwa 40.000 Besucher live zusahen. Gewonnen hat überzeugend Marcel Hirscher. Der Kartenvorverkauf für 2020 hat schon begonnen.

Im Mai dieses Jahres haben meine Frau und ich bereits zum sechsten Mal einen Sommerurlaub im Hotel Martin in Ramsau am Dachstein verbracht. Vom Balkon unseres Zimmer hat man einen schönen Ausblick nach Süden auf den bäuerlichen Ortsteil "Untere Leiten". Dahinter ragt - getrennt durch das nicht sichtbare tieferliegende Ennstal, die "Planai", der Hausberg von Schladming, empor.
Deutlich erkennt man die ausgeholzten Flächen, wo im Winter die Skipisten ins Tal führen. Seit vielen Jahren findet hier im Rahmen des Ski-Weltcups ein Nachtslalom statt. Nahe dort, wo dann bis zu 50.000 Zuschauer den Gladiatoren unserer Zeit zujubeln, legt Ende Mai die tiefstehende Abendsonne lange Schatten auf die stille, friedliche Landschaft.
Frosty memories from past summer days. The plan for this day was to visit the Hoher Dachstein and the glacier. We concurred the mountain on the Cable Car. When got up to the station at nearly 3000 m, everything around was covered in thick clouds with virtually zero visibility and slim chances to be cleared in the afternoon. So, before returning back, we paid the visit to one of the attraction at the top, Eispalast, a mystical world of ice inside the Dachstein glacier. You reach the entrance to the palace via a bridge over the void, the experience not for people with vertigo, but not on that day, you barely can see the entrance, never mind what is down below your feet in such thick fog. It was as freezing inside as it was cold outside, but at least you can see through. The display was indeed spectacular with beautiful colourful illumination. Here are few coldest memories of the last hot summer. “Hopsi” the rabbit is the mascot of Planai-Hoshwurzen-Bahnen and of the 1982 and 2013 Ski World Championships in Schladming. In summer visitors can meet him in Hopsiland on the summit of the Planai.

Das Ziel unserer Wanderung war an diesem Tag hier am wunderschön gelegenen Riesachsee erreicht. Wir setzten uns, und konnten uns eine Zeit lang gar nicht satt sehen. Die Wasserober-fläche dieses etwa 19 m tiefen Bergsees liegt auf einer Höhe von 1338 m und doch ist es für lokale Verhältnisse ein See in Tallage. Denn wenn man hinten im Talschluss des Riesachtals über die Preintalerhütte und nach rechts über das Lämmerkar in die höhere Bergregion ansteigt, erreicht man über die untere Klafferscharte das Naturwunder des Klafferkessels, eine Kar-Landschaft mit einer Handvoll größerer und über einem Dutzend kleinerer eiszeitlicher Gletscherseen. Wasser gibt es viel hier. So verwundert die Sage über den Lindwurm im Riesachsee gar nicht, wonach der Riesachsee früher tiefer war, aber seit der Lindwurm sich durch die Berge Richtung Planai und Fastenberg gräbt, um irgendwann im Grubegg am Südende der Stadt Schladming aus dem Berg herauszubrechen, sich durch den Grabstollen der Wasserspiegel des Riesachsees entsprechend abgesenkt hat. Und wenn der Lindwurm einst in Schladming durchkommt, würde ganz Schladming und das halbe Ennstal vom vielen Wasser der Seen überflutet oder gar weggespült werden, lautet die finale Angst der Autoren jener Sage. Ich hoffe es ist eine Sage ohne jeden Wahrheitsgehalt und es bleibt alles so schön wie es ist.
We had reached the end of our hike that day at the beautifully situated Lake Riesach. We sat down and couldn't get enough of it for a while. The water surface of this mountain lake, which is around 19 metres deep, lies at an altitude of 1338 metres and yet, by local standards, it is a lake in a valley. Because if you climb to the back of the Riesachtal valley via the refuge Preintalerhütte and to the right over the cwm Lämmerkar into the higher mountain region, you reach the natural wonder of the Klafferkessel via the gap Lower Klafferscharte, a cirque landscape with a handful of larger and over a dozen smaller ice-age glacial lakes. There is plenty of water here. So the legend about the Lindwurm in Lake Riesach is not at all surprising, according to which Lake Riesach used to be deeper, but since the Lindwurm dug its way through the mountains towards Planai and Fastenberg to break out of the mountain at Grubegg at the southern end of the town of Schladming, the water level of Lake Riesach has lowered accordingly due to the digging tunnel. And if the Lindwurm were to pass through Schladming one day, the whole of Schladming and half of the Enns Valley would be flooded or even washed away by the many waters of the lakes, is the final fear of the authors of this legend. I hope it is a legend without any truth to it and that everything remains as beautiful as it is.
