Did you know many painted sheep markings, called raddles, are used to tell which ram is a father and when a lamb might be born? The practice goes back centuries, when shepherds used red ochre from local sedimentary deposits as a natural marker.
Today, the ram wears a harness fitted with a crayon block. When he mates with a ewe, the crayon leaves a colored mark on her back. Because a lamb’s gestation is about 147 days, the shepherd can estimate when it will arrive.
Every two weeks, the shepherd changes the crayon color to keep track of which ewes were bred later. Before long, the flock looks like a moving plaid blanket drifting across the fields.
