A bottle of Pastrami on Rye from Pipeworks Brewing Company from Chicago, Illinois, at Olympen in Oslo.
Pipeworks Pastrami on Rye is an 8.5% abv ale brewed with 11 different herbs and spices traditionally used in curing pastrami: Mustard seed, bay leaf, red pepper, coriander, ginger, allspice, clove, carraway, Tellicherry black peppercorn, cinnamon and nutmeg. It was brewed with rye, dark candi sugar and some smoked malt.
It poured a dark reddish brown color with a thin beige head. My first thought when smelling the beer was Coca Cola, but as it warmed up the rich spice character opened up new smells. Pretty amazing! The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a soft carbonation. The flavor opened up with a multitude of spices, ginger, cloves and nutmeg in particular, but still impressively balanced, with a nice sweet undercurrent and a slightly hot aftertaste, reminding me of chili pepper.
Overall a surprisingly well balanced spiced beer, though I'm not sure I could drink a lot of it.
