According to the heritage register, the Golden Pipeline consists of over 60,000 connected pipes, each 28 feet long.

This was where we decided to turn around. Instead of turning to head toward the creek, the trail seemed to follow the cleared path of a buried petroleum pipeline.

The pipeline that cuts through this patch of Ferne Clyffe State Park and through the Shawnee National Forest around it is mentioned in this article from 2015. In summary, this is a former natural gas pipeline recently retrofitted to carry petroleum with the ultimate hope that it becomes part of a 1,134 mile long network carrying oil from the Bakken Fields in North Dakota to the Gulf of Mexico.
