An early flowering plant, Cuckoo Pint can be seen in April and May. It is a shade-loving plant of woodlands and hedgerows and is particularly distinctive as it displays a pale green sheath surrounding a purple or yellow 'spadix' (a spike of tiny flowers on a fleshy stem). This spadix eventually produces an upright stalk of poisonous bright red berries. All parts of the plant can produce allergic reactions in many people and the plant should be handled with care. It is also known by many other names such as lords-and-ladies, wake-robin or starchwort (because the plant's root was used to make laundry starch). It grows in moist and generally shaded habitats, making it an ideal plant for the edges of woodland streams and marshes.
At least i've achieved something with my time in Melbourne, namley having drunk over 100 Pints of Guinness at Pugg Mahones in Carlton. Mostly after work pints, but pretty easily done.
Unfortunatly the ability to be able to drink copious amounts of Guinness isn't on the Australian Immigrations list of desireable qualities for extending my stay!
