Crompton Moor Pine Forest

A frozen lake reveals fractured ice beneath snowy hills and forest, framed by bare winter branches. The scene blends alpine textures, suspended geometry, and the quiet rhythm of Vosgian winter stillness.

Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River. The river flows to the Emerald Pools, which have waterfalls and a hanging garden. Also along the river, partly through deep chasms, is Zion Narrows wading hike.

We've been looking for one of these guys to photograph for ages. Aparna's eagle eye spotted a couple in Cecila Forest.

This has to be the best branded 'shroom of all. As a child, I was taught in school that it was deadly poisonous. In fact - according to Wikipedia - it's estimated you'd need to eat about 15 of these suckers to kill you. A case of the mysterious phenomenon of mycophobia.

As it is, you can take them for their hallucinogenic effects (they contain a drug called muscimol) - if you're fond of copious sweating and twitching with your highs.

Or you could take the route of Siberian tribespeople: drink the urine of someone who ate them first to ameliorate the side-effects. Somehow I don't think the humble psilocybin 'shrooms are about to be toppled from their perch as top fungal tipple any time soon.

Poor Aparna's wee compact refused to focus in this gloom, so I could get her to hold the flash for this one. An SB-800 firing on manual via the infra red signal from the D200's built-in flash. With the flash, it was just crazy sharp with the 60mm macro lens.

The Manali Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The sanctuary starts about 2 km from Manali. It is the catchment of Manalsu khad. A path from Manali log huts and Dhungri temple passes through dense Deodar, Kail, Horse chestnut, Walnut and Maple forests. Musk deer, Monal and Brown bear, Leopard and Snow leopard are some of the common animals seen here. Herds of Ibex are seen migrating in the glacier zone in summers. The area of the sanctuary is about 31.8 square kilometres. The following area was declared as a sanctuary on 26 February 1954, under the Punjab Birds and Wild Animals Protection Act of 1933.

Grayling / hipparchia semele. Dunwich Forest, Suffolk. 23/07/20.

Several Graylings were alternating between sunning themselves on a stony track or nectaring on Bell Heather flowers. When perched, this species never hold their wings open and usually lower their closed forewings down between their hindwings.

The butterfly shown hadn't fully done this and was partially revealing a black eye spot and some of the orange 'brand'. on it's right forewing.

Scottish Crossbill (Loxia scotica)

"The Scottish crossbill is a chunky, thick-set finch with a large head and substantial bill. It is very difficult to distinguish from the other members of the crossbill family. It is the UK's only endemic bird species (ie one found nowhere else in the world)."

Taken on a walk near Corrimony this morning. The bird was a long way up at the top of a Sitka Spruce laden with cones, the tree was swaying around in the wind and I was holding the big lens above my head to get this shot; I am amazed that all the shots weren't blurred and any were in focus!

Maybe I should get a Drone??

The crested tit is largely confined to ancient Caledonian pine forests and Scots pine plantations. Rothiemurchus Forest is one such place and I was delighted to see several of these little beauties on my recent trip there.

In their territory, surrounded by pine trees, the long-eared owls (Asio otus) are practically undetectable. Their camouflage is not only based on their colours, but also on their shapes; they are able to lengthen their body to look like another branch of the pine tree.

Thus, confident in their camouflage and always without direct glances or sudden movements, you can place yourself a few metres from this beautiful species and take portraits like the one I am showing you today. I insist, this specimen is photographed in its environment and in total freedom.

From last years fantastic October days. Dense fog almost every day. Seems like the world was on hold. Complete silence.

Soooo... we're back! I still have my day 15 picture to take and it's already evening. This day has slipped by.

Uploaded the pictures I took while away, for my 365. Enjoy! And oh, btw, it's good to be back home :) (although I do miss everyone in Finland so terribly!)

The drive to where I stayed recently to photograph Pine Marten in the Scottish Highlands takes you through some breathtaking primeval forests like this.

Having settled in I took a hike back up the valley to this forest to capture this photo amongst others to show the habitat of the Pine Marten.

I think this is one of the brittlegills, Russula emetica, known as 'The Sickener', so don't eat! This type is very common in one of the local conifer forests.

A lot of snow had fallen during the winter of 2008/2009 and even towards the end of June there was a lot of it lying around. It appears as if the last winter was colder than preceeding winters in large parts of Europe and Asia. The last time I had visited the lake it was in August 2000 and there was no snow on the ground.

The whole area as soon as you left Naran all the way to the lake was now part of the Lake Saiful Muluk National Park. It is an area of outstanding beauty and of tourist value but wildlife such as black bear, leopard, wolf, markhor, ibex, musk deer, monkey, pheasant, partridges, eagles, vultures are all quite rare now.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saiful_Muluk

Lake Saiful Muluk (Urdu: سیف الملوک)is a lake located at the northern end of the Kaghan Valley ( 34°52′37.34″N 73°41′37.71″E) near Naran. It is in the north east of Mansehra District in the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. At an altitude of 3,224 m (10,578 feet) above sea level it is amongst one of the highest lakes in Pakistan.

The lake is accessible by a 14 km road from Naran (which is accessible by a road from Mansehra via Balakot and Kaghan) during the summer months. On foot, the trek from Naran to the lake takes about 4-6 hours. The water is clear with a slight green tone. The clarity of the water comes from the multiple glaciers all around the high basin which feed the lake.

A fairy tale called Saiful Muluk, written by the famous sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, is associated with the lake.[1] It is the story of prince of Persia who fell in love with a fairy princess at the lake.[2] The impact of the lake beauty is of such extent that people believe that fairies come down to lake in full moon.

A poet and writer from Balakot, Ahmad Hussain Mujahid, has written the story of Saif ul Malook. The first edition of the book Saif ul Malook was published in 1999.

Mansehra District has had a flourishing tourism industry in the past due to its many mountain ranges and the Saiful Muluk Lake, however since the 2005 earthquake the region has seen a decrease in tourists. This lake is about ten thousand feet above the ground level of Naran, this beautiful lake reflects many colors in minutes.[3] Lately there has been an interest in building hotels in the area.[4]

These cute quick little mammals were awesome to watch, but at the same time tricky to capture, i didn't want to put the ISO up too high, but you need a quick enough shutter to grab a image, in the testing light of a pine forest, i tried my best.

Navarredonda de Gredos, pinède enneigée | snowy pine forest

The mighty mountains echoed from a long distance, and I could not stop at this point where I stood after walking uphill. I was completely astonished by the beauty of this gigantic himalayan mountain range which stood high and still, and afterwards there were dark clouds gathering on the overcast sky. It was a pleasure to view the mountains from a distance and enjoy the nature of the clouds moving all over the place.
