The (European) pine marten (Martes martes) is a stealthy, acrobatic hunter that relies on the cover of woods and trees for its foraging missions. The pine marten has a long, lithe body with chocolate-brown fur and a pale-yellow patch around its throat. It has large, round ears and a long, bushy tail and is similar in size to a small domestic cat. It measures around 60–70cm and weighs approximately 1–2kg. Males are roughly a third bigger than females.

The European pine marten is very similar to the beech marten or stone marten (Martes foina).

Pine martens mainly eat small mammals, such as voles and mice, but can take prey up to the size of a hare. They will readily scavenge on carrion and also take birds and their eggs when the opportunity arises. Pine martens are not entirely carnivorous, as fruit and berries are readily eaten too.

The pine marten (Martes martes) is distributed through most portions of continental Eurasia from western Europe in the west to western Siberia in the east, from the northern edge of coniferous forest in the north to Asia Minor in the south. The species also inhabits the Caucasus and many Mediterranean islands.

At 12,944 feet, Lone Pine Peak is located on the east side of the Sierra Nevada range just west of the town of Lone Pine, California.

The mountain is fronted by some of the wonderful rock formations and desert scrub vegetation of the Alabama Hills Recreation Area.

Alabama Hills has been host to approximately 150 movies and a dozen TV series. Among the more well known: Several Tom Mix films, Hopalong Cassidy, The Gene Autry Show, The Lone Ranger, Bonanza and Gunga Din.

My best warbler of the day. Well, to be more precise, this youngster was my best find of the day while looking for warblers.

True to its name, the pine warbler is a bird of open pine woods and pine barrens, especially during the breeding season.

enjoying a rare sunny day

I'm away for a few days so won't have access to Flickr. So here's a Pine Marten photo that I took courtesy of my friend Ron Marshall who invited us to stay with them at his holiday home on Ardnamurchan. That unusual background is Loch Sunart, the huge sea loch on the south side of Ardnamurchan peninsula. Pine Martens are regular visitors to the garden here but they were a no-show on my only scheduled evening there. But I was up at 5am, staring at the empty garden until 5:40am when this one suddenly appeared, and stayed for about 5 minutes. I had only seen two Pine Martens previously; one as a child at Inverpolly and one on Ardnamurchan in 1982 that crossed the road in front of my car. So I was over the moon to have this brief but meaningful encounter. Females are smaller than males, and this didn't look very big so I'm assuming this is a female. Mean length of males from head to tail tip is 742mm while females are 671mm, which is about 7cm shorter.

For a couple of weeks, a couple dozen siskens frequented my feeders every day. They now seem to have moved on. I took this shot out of my living room window.

We still have a few pine siskins hanging around, eating seeds from our feeders as well as from various seed heads in the garden. Seen here on goldenrod
