The flow of time ... who knows what is time? Not even physics can explain the passing of time. The physicists emphasize that time does not flow at all; it just exists.

Albumin (egg-white emulsion) print

Seen in March 2023 at the exhibition "Piktorialismus" at the gallery "Albertina modern" in Vienna.

Snapped with an HD Pentax-DA 21mm f:3.2 Limited on my trusty Pentax K-1.

Sei's drum.

With this editing I would like to draw attention to a style of photography around the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The special aesthetics of the photos of that time still fascinate today.

Of course I am aware that digitally at best an approximation can be achieved. So be it.

Die gelbe Jacke

This breathtaking colour portrait in a style close to that of the painter Gustav Klimt was produced in 1923/24 by the Atelier d'Ora in Vienna. Madame d'Ora (Dora Kallmus) was a most successful high-society photographer. Her atelier (1907-1927) is said to have been among the first to apply the techniques of the pictorialist photographers (here a bromoil print) to studio photography.

Die blaue Blume

Ich suche die blaue Blume,

Ich suche und finde sie nie,

Mir träumt, dass in der Blume

Mein gutes Glück mir blüh.

Ich wandre mit meiner Harfe

Durch Länder, Städt und Au'n,

Ob nirgends in der Runde

Die blaue Blume zu schaun.

Ich wandre schon seit lange,

Hab lang gehofft, vertraut,

Doch ach, noch nirgends hab ich

Die blaue Blum geschaut.

(1818)

The Blue Flower

I am looking for the blue flower,

I am searching and never find it,

I have a dream that in this flower

Will flourish my good fortune.

I am hiking with my harp

Through countries, cities and flood plains,

But nowhere in the round

The blue flower was found.

I am hiking for a long time,

For a long time I hoped, I trusted,

But unfortunately I have not found

The blue flower anywhere.

(1818)

Joseph von Eichendorff (1788 - 1857)

A blue flower ( German: Blaue Blume) was a central symbol of inspiration for the Romanticism movement, and remains an enduring motif in Western art today. It stands for desire, love and the metaphysical striving for the infinite and unreachable. It symbolizes hope and the beauty of things.

Notes: Clarence Hudson White (April 8, 1871 – July 7, 1925) was an American photographer, teacher and a founding member of the Photo-Secession movement. He grew up in small towns in Ohio, where his primary influences were his family and the social life of rural America. After visiting the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, he took up photography. Although he was completely self-taught in the medium, within a few years he was internationally known for his pictorial photographs that captured the spirit and sentimentality of America in the early twentieth century. As he became well known for his images, White was sought out by other photographers who often traveled to Ohio to learn from him. He became friends with Alfred Stieglitz and helped advance the cause of photography as a true art form. In 1906 White and his family moved to New York City in order to be closer to Stieglitz and his circle and to further promote his own work. While there he became interested in teaching photography and in 1914 he established the Clarence H. White School of Photography, the first educational institution in America to teach photography as art. Due to the demands of his teaching duties, his own photography declined and White produced little new work during the last decade of his life. In 1925 he suffered a heart attack and died while teaching students in Mexico City.

Through his activities as a photographer, critic, dealer, and theorist, Alfred Stieglitz had a decisive influence on the development of modern art in America during the early twentieth century. Born in 1864 in New Jersey, Stieglitz moved with his family to Manhattan in 1871 and to Germany in 1881. Enrolled in 1882 as a student of mechanical engineering in the Technische Hochschule (technical high school) in Berlin, he was first exposed to photography when he took a photochemistry course in 1883. From then on he was involved with photography, first as a technical and scientific challenge, later as an artistic one. Returning with his family to America in 1890, he became a member of and advocate for the school of pictorial photography in which photography was considered to be a legitimate form of artistic expression. In 1896 he joined the Camera Club in New York and managed and edited Camera Notes, its quarterly journal. Leaving the club six years later, Stieglitz established the Photo-Secession group in 1902 and the influential periodical Camera Work in 1903. In 1905, to provide exhibition space for the group, he founded the first of his three New York galleries, The Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, which came to be known as Gallery 291. In 1907 he began to exhibit the work of other artists, both European and American, making the gallery a fulcrum of modernism. As a gallery director, Stieglitz provided emotional and intellectual sustenance to young modernists, both photographers and artists. His Gallery 291 became a locus for the exchange of critical opinions and theoretical and philosophical views in the arts, while his periodical Camera Work became a forum for the introduction of new aesthetic theories by American and European artists, critics, and writers. After Stieglitz closed Gallery 291 in 1917, he photographed extensively, and in 1922 he began his series of cloud photographs, which represented the culmination of his theories on modernism and photography. In 1924 Stieglitz married Georgia O'Keeffe, with whom he had shared spiritual and intellectual companionship since 1916. In December of 1925 he opened the Intimate Gallery and in 1929 opened a gallery called An American Place, which he was to operate until his death. During the thirties, Stieglitz photographed less, stopping altogether in 1937 due to failing health. He died in 1946, in New York. (source: The Phillips Collection)
