Welcome to the Medieval. This is a build I made for the new Black Falcons, showing a remote outpost in which the archers are training to be the best of the best.
The build was inspired by buildings from games like Age of Empires, with lots of little details and a fully detailed interior.

DAY 7
It is just one after the other of interesting looking men, huh, Pikemen that is!
I spot the reflections in the shiny steel.
Pikemen wear steel half-armour of back and breast plates with tassets and a morion (steel helmet).
The weight is about 18 lbs (8.16 KG). They are armed with swords and pikes.
The latter would originally have been 18 feet long but for reasons of practicality 12-foot pikes are used today.
I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)

Bernard van Orley and Jan and William Dermoyen - Flight of the French and desertion of the Swiss pikemen - Tapestries of the battle of Pavia - 1528-1531 (or 1533) - Technique wool, silk, gold and silver thread dimensions 440 Ă 870 cm . - Capodimonte Museum, Naples
The seven tapestries tell the salient episodes of the battle of Pavia, fought in 1525 for the dominion in Italy between the troops of the French king Francis I of Valois and the imperial troops of Charles V of Habsburg. The Flemish tapestries were made in Brussels on designs by Bernard van Orley, a famous painter and cartoonist of tapestries and stained glass windows, probably between 1528 and 1531 as suggested by the presence of the tapestry maker William Dermoyen, along the border of two of the seven tapestries.
Donated in 1531 to Emperor Charles V by the General States of Brussels, after various hereditary passages, they become part thanks to the testamentary legacy of the young don Carlos, son of Philip II, of the collections of Francesco Ferdinando d'Avalos, direct descendant of the homonymous hero of Pavia, died from the injuries sustained in battle.

I couldn't help myself, I just HAD to take some portraits of these characters!
Only veteran members of the HAC who have had proven efficient service in the HACâs Territorial Army regiment are eligible to join the Company of Pikemen & Musketeers.
All join in the lowest rank, regardless of any previous military rank held.
Members must be fit enough to competently complete the march of the Lord Mayorâs Show.
Military medals and insignia are permitted to be worn.
The seniority of officers and non-commissioned officers is signified by the amount of lace worn on collars and cuffs; the more lace the more senior the rank.
Members are unpaid but give freely of their own time for drill practice and rehearsals as well as the parades and guards themselves.
All make a significant contribution towards the cost of their own uniform and are expected to clean and look after their armour, muskets and other kit to maintain the highest standards of turnout for the many prestigious occasions they parade for.

DAY 7
Last in this little series of The Company of Pikemen & Musketeers parading in Brugge, an occasion attended by the sister of the Belgian king, in honour of their 360th anniversary.
Musketeers wear a buff sur-coat and wide-brimmed felt hat.
They are armed with a match-lock musket and wear a leather cross belt, from which are suspended 12 wooden powder flasks known as apostles.
A musketeer (French: mousquetaire) was a type of soldier equipped with a musket.
Musketeers were an important part of early modern armies, particularly in Europe and the west, as they normally comprised the majority of their infantry. The musketeer was a precursor to the riflemanâs.
The iconic "Redcoat" of the British Empire was the staple unit in the British armies that created the largest empire in history.
The British infantryman was well trained by the standards of the time, training with live ammunition. A fully trained redcoat could fire four times a minute.

With pomp and circumstance the whole parade eventually disperses, but I see there is a reception in the beautiful Gothic Hall, in the town hall, for the top brass.
These come out early, once more synchronised in their dance?
They must be high up Pikemen, laced and medalled. So much finery!

"Many enemies, much honor"- Georg Von Frundsberg
The Landsknecht were Germanic mercenaries active during the late 15th to early 17th centuries in Europe. They were specialized in the pike and shot formation that was first pioneered by the Swiss mercenaries, who became their rivals. They also had some troops who wielded the "zweihander", a large two-handed sword used for breaking lines of pikemen. The Landsknecht were known for their brutality on the battlefield, as well as their colorful dress. The most famous Landsknecht was the commander Georg Von Frundsberg, who is often credited as "the father of the Landsknecht". Frundsberg was a proponent of infantry tactics and established the Landsknechts reputation as an effective fighting force.
While they were mercenaries, they would primarily serve the Habsburgs in the Holy Roman Empire in the Habsburg-Valois wars, Habsburg-Ottoman wars, and the European wars of religion. They were originally formed to serve as Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I personal army, but this did not happen. Despite their participation in the European wars of religions on the side of the Catholic Habsburgs, landsknecht ranks included both Catholics and Protestants. In fact, Georg Von Frundsberg was rumored to have said words of encouragement to the "little monk" Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms in 1521.
The most famous engagements of the landsknecht were the Battle of Pavia in 1525, which saw the capture of French King Francis I and defeat of the Swiss mercenaries, the sack of Rome in 1527, and the defense of Vienna from the Ottoman empire in 1529. Overtime the landsknecht they no longer had the guidance of leaders like Frundsberg and their reputation as brutal and unruly mercenaries grew. They would soon be replaced by the Spanish Tercios, who were far more effective.

As word spread throughout Lenfald of its newfound independence, the rioting quickly subsided and was replaced with celebration in the street and even public displays of national pride. Citizens walked with purpose and went about their daily labors with vigor, invigorated by the exciting news. Young men once again lined up to enlist in the service of Lenfald.
Abner was sent with Gottfried to assist in the training of some of these new recruits and to share with them some of his personal experiences with the rangers. This task took the men to the southern wall of Ainesford city proper, where the new training area for spear units had been constructed. It consisted of not much more than an open field adjacent to the perimeter wall, but it was well-kept and served its purpose well.
The rangers were escorted by Captain Harmon, the commander of the training center and its garrison. He briefed the two men as they made their way alongside the wall.
"We learned a lot of valuable lessons during the war with Loreos," he said. "Namely that Lenfald simply lacked a solid defense against the might of the Loreesi cavalry and elephants. But no more." He gestured in the direction of a formation of pikemen on the drill field. "Observe."
"Ready... BRACE!" came the command from the sergeant in charge of the formation. The soldiers moved in perfect synchronization, the front rank dropping to a knee and simultaneously lowering their long spears and the men behind them filling the gaps with their own pikes. Any enemy coming against the formation would now be facing a deadly thicket of sharpened steel.
"As you can see," continued Captain Harmon with a smirk, "That problem has long been resolved. We have also been training new spear units, armored and carrying kite shields, to protect the flanks of our armies. All of our new soldiers will be useful in fending off enemy infantry and cavalry while our archers rain death upon them."
Captain Gottfried Meyrick nodded. "Well done, Captain. It would appear that Ainesford is well prepared for any contingency."
"Aye," came the reply, "and not just Ainesford, but all Lenfald."
Abner spoke up, "To what do you refer, sir? Have you more news to share?"
Captain Harmon lowered his voice. "Aye, ranger. The Areani think themselves quite clever spies, but they are nothing compared to Lenfel scouts. We have them thoroughly convinced that our nation's military is in disarray and that our people continue to riot. Even now the Loreesi are assembling a mighty host under the command of Mark of Falworth just south of our borders. They believe us weak and disorganized. This will give us a critical advantage if the desert rats decide to attempt another incursion into our lands. We will rout them and send them running back to the sand pits."
Abner furrowed his brow. "But would it not be more advantageous to arrange a great show of force along the border? Discourage Loreos from invading to begin with?"
Captain Harmon shook his head. "One would think so, at first," he replied, "but Jarius does not think in this manner. He has likely already decided whether or not he will invade Lenfald; it matters not how many men we amass at the border. Jarius' pride is too great for him to back down no matter what the odds. No, young warrior, our best course of action is to continue to feed our enemy false intelligence. But in the meantime, let's continue with our preparations."

As the Grenadier Guards are standing tall, I hear a flighty sound and beat of drums. What is coming?
A feast for the eyes⊠The Company of Pikemen & Musketeers.
It turns out that the Company of Pikemen & Musketeers are a ceremonial unit of the Honourable Artillery Company and one of only six royally warranted bodies in the UK.
Seventeenth century marches and music are provided by the Companyâs own drums and fifes.
They come to a halt in front of me, when I spot this lovely detail.

600 years ago today, the Battle of Agincourt changed history, and also provided William Shakespeare with material for one his greatest plays, Henry V. The term, âBand of Brothersâ comes directly from this famous play. King Henry V of England himself fought hand-to-hand during the battle, and even though badly outnumbered his forces crushed the French nobility, changing the political landscape of Europe at the time.
In remembrance of this event, members of WAMALUG decided to both build a huge castle-related LEGO diorama, and also launch our own history-related group called HistoryLUG. Built during the span of one of our monthly meetings, we used Magnus Laugloâs Modular Landscape System, our trees and foliage, Lady Kiannaâs buildings and all of our realistic castle-theme minifigs. This only took about four hours to complete.
From Wikipedia:
The Battle of Agincourt was a major English victory in the Hundred Years' War. The battle took place on Friday, 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin's Day), near modern-day Azincourt, in northern France. Henry V's victory at Agincourt, against a numerically superior French army, crippled France and started a new period in the war. After the victory, Henry V married the French king's daughter, and their son, later Henry VI of England and Henry II of France, was made heir to the throne of France as well as of England.
Henry V led his troops into battle and participated in hand-to-hand fighting. The French king of the time, Charles VI, did not command the French army himself as he suffered from severe illnesses. Instead, the French were commanded by Constable Charles d'Albret, who perished during the conflict.
This battle is notable for the use of the English longbow in very large numbers, with English and Welsh archers forming most of Henry's army.
From Shakespeareâs play, King Henryâs Saint Crispinâs Day speech prior to the battle:
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Henry Flint and the guardians of Thronfeld's western border. The South Western shores of the Grey Channel is the only safe shore to land boats, so Channelstone is a very important strategic location. House Flint's docks house a powerful navy and protect Thronfeld from any large naval attack from pirates or armies from the Western Cities across the channel.
House Flint is famous for their Pikemen and frequently fight in tandem with House Fielder's Cavalry. The Flint's were servants of House Guant when they were exiled to Esterdame from the Western Cities in 85AV, built Channelstone in 90AV and were given the castle to defend when the Storm Hold was built in 102AV, which became the seat of power for House Guant, until 180AV when the Guants expanded north and built Thunderhall. They then gifted the Storm Hold to the Fielder's.
Crescent Landing is the city which rests on the rocky cliffs above Channelstone, and this city housed much of Thronfeld's population during the 9 years of chaos that followed the downfall of the Fielder's in 728AV. With the Young King's return, the residents are looking forward to returning to their land.

On the right is Lord Henry Flint (Born 702AV). He is the head of House Flint, the lord of the western castle called Channelstone and the protector of the city of Crescent Landing. His domain was one of the few that remained intact after the Kingdom of Thronfeld fell with the Sacking of the Storm Hold in 728AV, because of it's harsh terrain and distance from the lands of the Orcs.
On the left is Sir Karston Flint (Born 703AV), cousin of Henry and best friend of the King's cousin, Commander Eodren. He is in command at the the Marsh Fort, which is a pivital defensive location in Eastern Thronfeld. From this position, he leads a special squad of shock troopers that can be deployed quickly in small boats that can traverse the the vast river system in the North-East and South-East (the two main frontiers).
The Sigil of House Flint is a Bear and their soldiers make up most of the pikemen in the King's infantry
As Sir Angus gazed up towards the deep gray heavens, the gentle rain pattered on his helmet and heavy armor. His thoughtful stare swept the curve of the river and his highlander band, all weary from the horrible night they'd just endured. He then surveyed the hideous surroundings. On one side of the slow-moving, brackish river rose towering moss-encrusted trees that barely stirred in the wind. Below, a gnarled swampy morass hid whatever wretched beasts (or men) that might be lurking therein.
"What on earth could possess a man to live in such a horrid abode?" Jeremy queried.
"I know not, my wee brother." answered Sir Angus, pulling his cloak more closely about himself. "The shrieks we heard in the blackness of night are still ringing in mine ears."
"I've got a bad feeling 'bout this, Angus." replied the young knight.
"As do I." Sir Angus's brow wrinkled in concern.
No sooner had these words left his mouth when screams and war cries echoed through the swamps, which instantly came alive with savages armed with bows! Arrows whizzed through the air.
"Shield wall to the left!" ordered Sir Angus.
The highlander pikemen immediately obeyed.
The Garheim archers retaliated with their own bolts, keeping the savages' volleys down.
"Look, Angus, to the front!" Jeremy shouted.
Sir Angus turned to see a canoe stretched across the river, barring the way ahead. It was stuffed with a large number of well-armed rebels!
"We outnumber them, men! Full speed ahead, we'll smash their vessel into a thousand shreds!"
All this commotion brought to life, out of the water, thousands of serpents, winding their sinuous forms through the stream, patiently awaiting a possible meal, should a warrior fall.
A sharp cry rang out. "Below! The cliff!"
Sir Angus whirled to behold an enormous snake with a head larger than that of a horse.
"Let's hope that is the only one! Spear him, men!"
As Sir Angus was sending his own spear in the direction of the beast, a small movement caught his eye, far above.
He looked upwards to see that the colossal tree above them was trembling. At the root of the massive oak, he saw a sight that struck ice through his veins. Two scruffy dwarves were chopping at the bark with tremendous haste. It would soon fall to crush them.
It all became clear then. The boatmen, snakes, and ambush were merely a lure to beckon them into a clever, devilish trap.
"Row back, Jeremy!" Sir Angus screamed. Without question, Jeremy responded with all his might.
Their boat slammed into the riverbank and Sir Angus sprang up to the grass plateau above.
Jeremy followed closely behind.
The two dwarves, unaware of the mad dash of the frantic knights running up the hill, kept chopping.
Sir Angus, sailing through the air with a huge leap, pinned the largest dwarf to the earth, while Jeremy busied the other dwarf, who was terrified at the unexpected assault.
Down below on the river, the barricade finally gave way under the highlander onslaught, and the bowmen were forced to retreat under the heavy rain of Garheim arrows.
And that day, the victory belonged to Garheim.

Ainesford is a major Lenfel trading hub situated on the fork of the Aines and Marnie rivers and the border with Loreos. The main road south into Loreos passes through Ainesford and the city is also a major stop for riverine traffic passing between Durrough and the capital Stonewald. As such the city is famous for its economic prosperity and flourishing markets. In times of peace, goods constantly flow up and down the river and across the border. The city is also known for its multicultural make up which is reflected in both its people and architecture. Here is a section of the 'Red Elm' Markets, one of the major market places in Ainesford.
Some Pikemen of the Ainesford militia. After the crushing defeat of Lenfel forces at the Battle of Ainesford a few years ago during the War of Loreesi Aggression, the new Grand Duke has focused on training pikemen. Pikemen are ideal to counter the heavy Loreesi cavalry that dominated the field that day. These pikemen are led by a Lenfel Knight, a somewhat unusual sight as the majority of Lenfel cavalry are usually lighter armed and mounted.

BRUGGE...
The gloved hands of a musketeer holding his drumsticks.
Bandoliers were used by musketeers to hold single measures of gun powder for their muskets, called Apostles.

The seniority of officers and non-commissioned officers is signified by the amount of lace worn on collars and cuffs; the more lace the more senior the rank.
The Pikemen & Musketeers are dressed and equipped as members of the Company would have been in the 1640s and are tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and escorting him when he is on official business.
Company of Pikemen & Musketeers to parade no more than 63 members at any one time, that being the size of a company in the 17th century.

The Battle of Flodden took place here on September 9, 1513. The battle ended with a crushing defeat for the Scots and the death of the Scottish king James IV.
England was involved in a major conflict and fought on the side of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Pope Julius II against France.
James IV took advantage of Henry VIII's absence and declared war on England. James marched into England with an army. When he reached the battlefield, the strength of his troops totalled around 30,000 men. The Scots faced an English army of roughly equal strength.
The much better trained English artillery drove the Scottish artillerymen from the field. The English cannons and archers then concentrated their fire on the Scottish pikemen. The heavy losses tempted the Scots to charge down the hill to get the English within range. In the bloody battle, the Scots were
finally surrounded and routed.
James IV, many high-ranking nobles and over 10,000 soldiers were killed. The English losses are estimated at between 1000 and 1500 men.

And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
