Scleroderma citrinum, commonly known as the common earthball, pigskin poison puffball, or common earth ball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK. It is similar in appearance to a warty potato. Acid soils, especially on the compacted paths in forests, are its main habitat.
Nothing brings a group of completely different people together in such a large space, nothing keeps you on the edge of your seat... where politics have no place, and its simply about getting that pigskin.
Thank God for Football.

Scleroderma citrinum, commonly known as the common earthball, pigskin poison puffball, or common earth ball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK and occurs widely in woods, heathland and in short grass from autumn to winter. Scleroderma citrinum has two synonyms, Scleroderma aurantium (Vaill.) and Scleroderma vulgare Horn.
Earthballs are superficially similar to, and considered look-alikes of, the edible puffball (particularly Apioperdon pyriforme), but whereas the puffball has a single opening on top through which the spores are dispersed, the earthball just breaks up to release the spores. Moreover, Scleroderma citrinum has much firmer flesh and a dark gleba (interior) much earlier in development than puffballs. Scleroderma citrinum has no stem but is attached to the soil by mycelial cords. The peridium, or outer wall, is thick and firm, usually ochre yellow externally with irregular warts.

With Halloween coming up, I thought of witches and the like, hence this title.
I discovered this 'egg' right beside the blossoming heather in my previous photo! It is the poisonous Common earthball, also called the Pigskin poison puffball. Its colour varies, ranging from almost white to ochre, but I love this bright yellow one!
I've just discovered that 'Witch's Egg' is in fact an existing name for a mushroom: the Stinkhorn. So: I do know this is not a Stinkhorn - my title is intended as a joke.
I thought this fungus had a skull-like shape and colour. I wouldn't like to come across a big one like this on a Halloween walk! 💀👽
The Common earthball is poisonous, so maybe the shape of this specimen is a welcome warning ... ☠ [Explored in the Patterns Takeover, on 28/12/2023, #312]
Common in California Woods Nature Preserve. Black interior and the name,,,,poison is enough for me. The variety of fungus is amazing.
Built in December 1947 and registered in January 1948, this Jaguar 3.5 litre saloon was originally owned by Arthur Whittaker who at the time was Jaguar Cars’ general manager. Finished in black with pigskin interior and burr walnut veneer, the car was a late Christmas present from Arthur to his wife, Mary. List price in 1948 was £1,263.
This historic car, GVC 321, is preserved at the British Motor Museum.

I believe this is the Common Earthball or Pigskin Poison puffball, (Scleroderma Citrinum).
It was about the size of an orange.
This is an example of the kinds of meat markets many of us in the west never experienced. Our prepared meats come nicely cut and packaged in styrofoam and plastic, but what about the rest of the animal's parts?
Pigs heads, legs, and meats are hung on hooks at a vendor's stall in a wet market in Legazpi, Philippines. The vendor gave me a good-natured, intense, funny-face look that added to the mood of the subject matter. lol

I decided to mix it up a bit and post something a bit outside my norm, in fact, you could say it's almost the exact opposite of the peaceful, calm, people-free landscapes I typically post. Football season is upon us and I was able to go to the Seattle Seahwaks home opener at Qwest Field a few weeks ago. Rather than bring my super long telephoto like all the other photographers at the stadium, I decided to bring my wide angle lens and see just how wide it could get. Combined with the full frame of the D700, I was blown away at how much I was able to get in with the 14mm wide angle lens. I thought this perspective was rather interesting as not only did it really show how large the stadium is, but it also really led your eye to the city skyline backdrop in the distance. Here's a fun fact, though Seattle is known to get it's fair share of rain, both of the sports stadiums are open-air (though the baseball stadium, SAFECO field, does have a roof that closes).
About the shot, this was a 9 shot HDR that was hand-held. This was very tricky without a tripod and I had to set my ISO up higher than I'm usually comfortable with in order to be able to take the shot. I was surprised at little noise there was but still did give it a quick pass in NoiseWare. Then just some standard post processing for levels and contrast to balance out the image. Definitely need to view this one stadium size to appreciate the detail. Hope you all have a wonderful week!

A dad and his kids toss a football at Bunny Beach as a lifeguard watches the sunset.
It appears that some locals have released domestic rabbits into the bushes in the area. They have reproduced as rabbits tend to do. Walking the dog here is most interesting, as he finds a bunny to investigate quite often. And so my kids refer to this as , "Bunny Beach".

K. G. Corfield Ltd were based in Merridale Street, Wolverhampton and became the leading 35mm camera manufacturer in England. This is the first model produced in 1953, one of less than 400 made with pigskin. The Periflex is quite unusual in that it has a periscope type device to aid focusing. The Periflex uses a Leica thread mount and locally made Lumar lenses.
I have been interested in photography for many years and it is only recently that I discovered Corfield cameras even existed - and manufactured literally only 4 miles from where I live. I'm looking forward to taking the camera for a walk when the lock-down is finally over.

The first of four brass pins in the shape of a "pigskin" that I was awarded for participating in varsity football all four years of high school (1960-63)--in other words, I was a 4-year letterman in football (and to be clear, that was American football, not soccer). The pins were attached to my embroidered varsity letter, which was sewn onto my varsity jacket. The jacket is long gone, but I still have the treasured block "G" (for Galien High School) varsity letter and the pins. The pin itself is 1 inch long.

What does Common Earthball look like? A mycorrhizal fungus similar in appearance to a warty potato, the Common Earthball is generally rounded, with no stem and dirty yellow to brown in colour. It has a rubbery, unpleasant smell – a little like gas. ... As the fungus matures, it can turn ochre-brown or green.
The spore mass is greyish, becoming purply-black, marbled at first by white veins and powdery when mature. The individual spores are spherical and spiked. When mature, the outer skin ruptures, creating a large, irregular opening which releases the spores which are then dispersed by wind and rain.
I got frustrated and left a "bit too early!" Was listening to the game on my radio and headed towards the north end zone to watch the finish on the jumbotron. When the Hokies scored, mayhem ensued. What an awesome day it was!
Macro Monday theme : When I was a child enjoyed tossing around the ole pigskin.Enjoy was now and only have a few months before football season starts back up.

This well made Brownie featured an imitation pigskin covered metal body with two brilliant view-finders. This camera has a very useful built-in sliding portrait lens for close-ups and a yellow filter for use with black and white film. It has a 2-pin flash contact for flash pictures, tripod sockets for horizontal and vertical use, and a shutter safety catch that helps eliminate double exposures. This camera also features a cable release socket which is uncommon on Brownie cameras.
The first production of this camera, from 1947 until 1953, had a vertically striped front front, a metal winding knob, and a metal shutter release release button.
From 1953-57 the camera changed to a horizontally striped design faceplate, plastic winding knob, and a plastic shutter release button.
The Six-20 Brownie Model E is a higher-quality workhorse of a camera from a great series produced in the UK for 20 years, starting in 1937. These box cameras were made to last using heavy-duty sheetmetal.
Current value is estimated to be around £10 - £15

A puffball fungus growing on a fallen branch along the trail at Great Falls National Park, VA, USA.
Google Lens IDs this as a common earthball (Scleroderma citrinum), also known as a pigskin poison puffball.
Scleroderma citrinum, commonly known as the common earthball, pigskin poison puffball, or common earth ball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK and occurs widely in woods, heathland and in short grass from autumn to winter. Ingestion of Scleroderma citrinum can cause gastrointestinal distress in humans and animals, and some individuals may experience lacrimation, rhinitis and rhinorrhea, and conjunctivitis from exposure to its spores.
