Some colour in a copy of my original pen sketch. The older part of Filey is centred on the parish church. The scars of earlier roof lines on the tower show it was extensively "restored" in the second half of the 19th century, the rebuilding incorporating Early English style lancet windows to the aisle of the chancel. Copies of the original Romanesque openings were used on the tower. Drawn with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen in a Moleskine sketchbook, photocopied and then coloured with Windsor and Newton watercolours.

A sketch of the kitchen at my sister-in-law's house. The kitchen is a considerable size, almost the same floor area as our kitchen and sitting room. By the far wall is a very large fridge, and the door to a long utility room. Drawn in a pocket size Moleskine sketchbook with Staedtler 0.05 pigmentliner pen.

A productive use of the last twenty minutes remaining on our car park ticket. The older part of Filey is centred on the parish church. Wet days in the Lake District are not uncommon. We had a couple of days like this during our holiday. One morning I sketched our walking boots and sticks as they waited patiently for the weather to clear. Drawn in my A5 Moleskine sketchbook with a Staedtler 0.05mm pigmentliner pen with Winsor and Newton watercolours.

Heading south for the AGM of the Society of Architectural Illustrators. It was our first in-person meeting since before the pandemic. The 07:38 York to London train was fairly busy and clearly not everyone onboard was convinced that Covid is no longer a threat. Drawn in my A5 size Moleskine sketchbook with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen.

One day during our week in the Lake District it rained almost all day. An opportunity to take my pen for a walk across the sketchbook page and record some of our accommodation. The Troutbeck apartment was built in 1979, part of the Woodlands block at Kirkstone Foot in Ambleside. It is handy for the town centre where there are excellent places to eat and shops, though access is via a steep hill. We have stayed in the apartment before, back in 2016. Since then it has had a bit of work done it, including a new boiler, new kitchen cupboard fronts, new cooker and now walk-in shower. Much of the furniture remains the same. This is the view from the dining table into the kitchen. Drawn in my A5 Moleskine sketchbook with a Staedtler 0.05 pigmentliner pen.

As the rain continued I did a second drawing of the sitting room in the Troutbeck apartment. The armchair was similar bit not identical to one that was in the flat on our last visit. Like the older chair we both tended to slip down it when we sat in it. There is small bookshelf behind it with a selection of DVDs, music CDs and books. The latter include useful walking guides. Drawn in my A5 Moleskine sketchbook with a Staedtler pigmentliner 0.05 pen.

After a fairly long walk the previous day we decided a shorter walk would be good idea and went to see the waterfalls on Stock Ghyll Beck. Just below the waterfalls is this impressive wear, built to speed the flow of water through the less steeply inclined section of river that was used to power up to seven watermills in Ambleside. Drawn with a Derwent Graphik 0.1 and Staedtler Pigmentliner 0.05 pens in an A6 pocket size Moleskine sketchbook.

The Acropolis...one of the wold's greatest and most influential architectural creations!

The caryatids - statues serving as columns - are replicas. Five of the original ones are housed in the brand new and amazing Acropolis Museum. The sixth one was removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century and is now in the British Museum in London.

One of the guards saw me sketching and warned it was forbidden to use watercolour, apparently because of the danger of polluting the stones!@? I managed to convince her that watercolour is quite harmless.

It was colder today so, after our state sanctioned exercise walk outside, I sat in the kitchen for half an hour and sketched the utility room throughout open door. Some of these houses have had the two rooms made into one to enlarge the kitchen but we prefer to have the original arrangement. The room is formed in a little structure with a lean-to roof, ideal for housing the washing machine, fridge and boiler that frees up space in the kitchen and removes the noise of the appliance a bit further from the living rooms. It was originally a wash house and wc, the shelf we use for the microwave and toaster formerly being where the sink was. Having been the wash house it conveniently has a drain and water supply separate to the kitchen. We have had the wc removed, providing more storage space. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pigmentliner pen in an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook.

The outline drawing for my 10 Minute Saiga.

Our first trip to the seaside for several years! Now we can go when it is quieter as my wife Carolynn has retired from her job at school. Filey Brigg is a rocky outcrop that extends from a headland formed of clay sitting on top of sandstone. I sketched it quickly just after our arrival from on top of the cliffs that sweep around in a broad arc behind the bay to the town. Drawn with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen in a Moleskine sketchbook in about 15 minutes.

The year 6 trip was to St Nicks, an environmental centre established on the site of a former landfill site to the east of York city centre. Here the children were able to participate in activities designed to make them more aware of their environment. My group began by picking up litter, having decided against planting a wild flower meadow. Then we made some Christmas tree decorations with bits oif willow and string. A third activity was a trail around the site looking for objects and information about recycling. The last activity was sitting around the fire discussing how they can improve the natural surroundings of their school. It was the first opportunity I had to safely do a sketch as all the children were gathered around the fire. Drawn on site with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen in a Moleskine sketchbook, colour added from memory.

After Athos, Meteora is the biggest and most important group of monasteries in Greece. In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the eremetic ideal in the 15th century. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting.

Let's visit the Monastery of Saint Stephen:

You enter the complex by a stone bridge that spans a steep cliff (see sketch on the right). A bended corridor with steps gives access to the lower courtyard, around which the nuns' cells are situated.

Steps lead to the second terrace, from where a bridge - spanning a narrow void - leads to a balcony (in red) that gives acces to the nun's cells on the second floor.

A further flight of steps leads to the third terrace and loggia of the katholikon (1798).

In the right corner of the loggia is the entrance door to the narthex. This square room has 4 columns and 9 cupolas.

Through porches on the left you enter the - much higher - naos, with a central cupola on a drum, 6 columns and 2 side apses.

Behind the iconostasis there is the sanctuary with the altar, backed by an apse and 2 apsidioles.

The priest can enter the sanctuary by a separate door.

The interior is completely covered with astonishing paintings.

Opposite the church is a square tower.

A flight of steps between tower and church leads to the upper, fourth terrace, from where there is a spectacular view of the city of Kalambaka and the surrounding landscape. On the right is a formal garden with well and an arched loggia.

Imagine the effort of cutting the shaft in the rock, god knows how deep...On the left there is the cemetry, a new church and a cross on a hillock.

The plan was made by viewing the exterior of the buildings as seen from the courtyards, except for the katholikon, which was accessible. So the outer perimeter of the buildings is guesswork. Later I found out that I missed another church, next to the modern one top left.

We have many items in the house featuring giraffes. Probably my wife's favourite animal and therefore an item that comes to mind whenever a present is called for. The larger mug on the left is her favourite for a caramel latte coffee. Drawn in an A4 Ebony sketchbook, Staedtler pigmentliner pen and watercolour.

A quick pen drawing (Staedtler Pigmentliner 0.05 mm nib)

Collection of pigment liners. So long as they are stored in cool dry places, the pens retain their qualities. The Faber Castell Sanguine and Sepia 4-pens sets are over 5-years old, and all 8 still work fine. The Copic SP pens have the advantage that they can be refilled and that there are replacement nibs available in case they wear down or get damaged accidentally. While many of these sets might have rather high suggested retail prices, many of them can be often found online heavily discounted after some Googling and careful shopping. As a general rule I reserve the finer sets for studio work, and take the inexpensive sets for field sketching. It's best to avoid leaving any pen set inside a car in hot weather, for the extreme heat could cause them to leak or dry them out. Blog entry

I was persuaded to help out on another school trip, my third in two weeks. This was with year six (10-11 year olds), visting an ecology centre on a former landfill site in York. I had few quiet moments before the classes assembled for registration and began a warm up sketch, adding figured as the children arrived. In no time at all it was time to go, after I had found the class In was actually going to accompany. I think I need to sketch people more often, I am a bit out of practice. Drawn with a Staedtler pigmentliner pen in an A5 Moleskine sketchbook.

Karies is the "capital" or adminstrative centre of the "Theoratic Republic" of Athos, but in fact not more than a village.

The Protaton:

Alhough founded in the 10th century the present stucture probably dates from the 14th Century.

It's basilica form is untypical for the church type on Athos.

The interior is filled with amazing fresco's, some of them by the famed painter Panselinos.

Again, below the drawing I made 40 years earlier....

From Bangkok, Thailand to Ljubljana, Slovenia. This little tuk tuk made quite a journey! It can be found at the corner of Trg osvobodilne fronte and Miklošičeva cesta in Ljubljana, just accross the street from the central bus station. It's parked on the front porch of a fast food restaurant. I have no idea what it's doing there, but it's quite a lovely little novelty :-)

Tools used for the sketch:

Quick concpept sketch. The lies the wounded heart speaks.

This is the view from the Dragon Bridge towards the Three Bridges. The Dragon Bridge can be found right in the centre of Ljubljana right next to the central open market. It crosses the river Ljubljanica. This is one of my favourite views in Ljubljana.

Equipo mínimo. Lapiz para boceto, Pigment liner para el dibujo básico, la plua para las sombras y el pincel para diluir la tinta y dar el efecto aguada a las sombras. La goma solo es porque la que incluye el portaminas la tengo rota.

These Staedtler product lines perform pretty similarly since they are both new. Given the significant difference in their suggested retail prices, I'd imagine that the Mars Professional Technical drawing pen must be sturdier than the lower priced Pigment liner pen and should last longer. Time will tell. Blog entry.
