St James Park è il più antico dei parchi reali di Londra e ha un piccolo lago con due isole, West e Duck Island, che prende il nome per i numerosi uccelli acquatici tra i quali una colonia di pellicani che è una caratteristica del parco da molti anni in quanto dono di un ambasciatore russo nel 1664. Anche se un precedente edificio esisteva sull'isola, l'attuale Duck Island Cottage è stato costruito tra il settembre 1840 e aprile 1841 e divenne la residenza del “birdkeeper” dal 1870. Tuttavia fu abbandonato dopo la morte del vecchio Custode, Thomas Hinton, che visse qui per più di 50 anni fino al 1953. Era in uno stato di abbandono, non da ultimo a causa dei danni del raid aereo dal 1940, e considerato inadatto per l'abitazione umana. Dopo essere stato salvato dalla demolizione è stato ristrutturato e ampliato, per diventare la sede del “London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust” nel 1994.
St. James's Park is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London and it has a small lake with two islands, West Island, and Duck Island, which is named for the collection of waterfowl. This includes a resident colony of pelicans, which has been a feature of the park since the first gift of the birds from a Russian ambassador in 1664. Though an earlier building existed on the island, the present Duck Island Cottage was built between September 1840 and April 1841 and became the residence of the birdkeeper by 1870. However, by the death of the veteran Bird Keeper, Thomas Hinton, who lived there for more than 50 years until 1953, it was in a state of disrepair, not least due to air raid damage from 1940, and considered unfit for human habitation. Having been saved from demolition it was extended and fully restored, to become the headquarters of the London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust in 1994.
