Just a simple happy moment with some yummy light. Complete with jelly on her shirt. lol. It was not what I intended to shoot for the theme, but it was such a busy week there was little time to think about the theme. I shot this while experimenting with my rental of the D600 and when I downloaded thought this was screaming for a caption. Then, I remembered the quote. So here it is. Week 23. Squeaking it in right under the wire once again! (And BTW....Loved the D600 so much I bought one. Yay!)

Quote by Helen Keller. Anyone else find that ironic?

This was a tough one! I tried a few different ideas this morning (all boring) and this is the one I like the best. Maybe a little different for intersecting, but I liked all the lines crossing in the prism of this goblet's stem. I placed a piece of poster board behind for a little more color.

And Happy Bokeh Wednesday!

A couple of weeks ago I asked Hannah if she was coming to see me the next day for our traditional Grammy Day. She said "Yeah. What are you going to take pictures of?" Oh my. She knows it's my "mission" to document her life, but I don't want to be remembered as the Grammy who always had the camera in front of her face. So, now that she's almost 3, I've decided we need to do some sort of activity each week while her baby sister is sleeping. Last week we made playdough and today we made corn dog muffins. Not exactly gourmet...but we do live in Texas...and Hannah loved making them AND eating them! Now, if I picked up the camera for a few quick shots in the process, that's still OK, right? lol

I am SO captivated by small details! My eye gravitates towards the littlest thing...sometimes to the exclusion of the big picture. I would hate to miss moments like this tho'. I've been so busy I haven't had time to finish editing pics from the hospital when Abigail was born. Found this little gem tonight. This was not long after Christmas, when Hannah had been allowed to touch breakable ornaments with one finger. Sweet baby girl...she reached for her little sister the same way. ♥ This was her first touch.

We had so much fun yesterday making playdough with Hannah. She had never played with it before and she doesn't like to get her hands dirty, so I wasn't sure if she would like it. But it was big hit! Fun, fun Grammy Day!

I bought these mini balls at Target for 1 dollar. Lol. They don't really "go" on my tree...even tho' I don't have one of those decorator type trees that is color coordinated. Yep....more useless stuff for me to store, just so I can photograph it!

BTW...shot this with my macro that took a tumble earlier this week. It survived without damage!! All that broke was the filter and, even tho' we had to PRY it off, the lens would still accept a new protective filter. Color me THANKFUL!!!!

Hard to believe after so many months that our new granddaughter is finally here! This was taken as we were all waiting for the nurse to bring her in after her first bath. Mom and baby are both doing well and Hannah seems happy about learning to be a good big sister. There are no good words to describe how grateful we are for God's precious gift.

It's been hot the last few days, but I'm glad summer is finally here. That doesn't mean I won't complain about it on day 30 of over 100 degree weather, but for now i'm going to revel in it. I decided to snap a new cover photo for Facebook (hence the unconventional format) to express that, then it dawned on me that my rest and relaxation would also fit for this theme.

She is gentle and hesitant and an observer, so this was not posed. All I did was lead her to my neighbors garden with the yummy light and give her the flower to play with. Her sweet gestures remind me that her middle name is Grace.

Funny story about Hannah: Last time I tried to trim her bangs, she was squirming all over the place, trying to avoid the scissors. Her avoidance tactic was to say "Do you need a hug?" lol. A sure fire way to get Grammy to put down the scissors for a minute. :) After several tries, I finally managed to get the job done and Hannah's aunt leaned over and asked "Hannah...do you know what you are?" She was planning to say "a stinker", but Hannah looked up into Kara's face and said "Bootiful". We laughed and Kara said..."No...I was going to say..." and Hannah interrupted with "CUTE"!! Yep....no self esteem problems here!

HCS everyone! (This pose is so cliche!) I'll be back for comments tonight!

I see all the technical things I would change if I could, but I still love it. Love Hannah's little pursed lips as she blows right along with Kara. So sweet having littles around so we can experience the magic of simple things again! I think it's even sweeter the second time around. ♥

303/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "Fake":

I have a little game I play on Friday's. It's called "How can I work Hannah into the challenge?" I'm so blessed that she comes to spend almost every Friday with me and, since she's my reason for wanting to learn photography, she's my subject of choice. I'm sorry for the shameless promotion of the granddaughter. :)

At any rate, Hannah is becoming very interested in babies as it will be only 7 weeks until her baby sister is born. Yesterday she went to the doctor with her mommy and came home saying "hear baby sister heartBEEP." :) She's quite serious about feeding her dolly. Her little baby bottle is a clever fake. Upright, it looks full of milk. Tilted to feed baby, it appears empty. (See other view in comments.)

Better on Black (Hit L if you have a minute)

Also, I'm sorry I'm behind in comments. I'm in charge of a piano festival for 400 students tomorrow and it's consuming my time. I'm still wondering if I'll be able to get my 365 done tomorrow. Fingers crossed for an easy challenge. I'll catch up with comments as soon as possible.

I know...more baby pics...but that's where we are right now. I've just been trying to give my daughter enough newborn photos for her to have something to choose for her birth announcements. I've come to the conclusion that I am NOT cut out to be a "studio photographer". Aside from the fact that I have no studio lighting, I lack the patience and experience for posing. Without a doubt, my favorite pics so far are the ones like this...of babies simply being babies...and you can't beat black and white.

"And the tongue is like a fire. It is a whole world of evil among the parts of our bodies." James 3:6 (NCV)

Sticks and stones will break my bones and words will ALWAYS hurt me. I heard this song the other day and thought it spoke really well to the challenge of "handle with care". www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNAg__u6aaU There are too many times I say things I regret. I wish I could take back my words but, once said, they've already done their damage. Oh, to learn to control my tongue!

I did this shot early this morning and was seriously afraid I might burn our house down. I had a soaking wet rag ready to throw on the matches if necessary, but thankfully never needed it. Guess the matches were a little on the old side...they fizzled after the W sparked. I was happy to get this on the first try....Not really a shot you want to keep repeating. lol

“Solitude is such a potential thing. We hear voices in solitude, we never hear in the hurry and turmoil of life; we receive counsels and comforts, we get under no other condition" (Amelia E Barr)

Monday is currently my day to regroup, to recover from the busy weekend, and prepare for the week. Sometimes, Mondays are interrupted with doctor/dentist appointments, etc., but they're often days with no set schedule. I can work at my own pace, indulging in daydreams while I try to accomplish things. I honestly enjoy the solitude. It refreshes me. I also love the days that I teach and busy weekends with my family...just in a different way. I suppose it all boils down to balance. That said, I think I need to get to work now! :)

Quote by Ellen Burstyn

My first time to photograph a field of sunflowers. Was very disappointed in most of my shots really. There were TONS of people there, which made it hard. I hope to go back at sunrise when there should be fewer people...and bring a step ladder and wear boots. I was worried about critters, so I just stood at the edge. lol. Anyway, as I was waiting for people to clear out (which never happened) I couldn't help snatching this shot. I have no idea who she is, but I just loved her pose and bright, happy face.

...She would win the gold medal! I thought today's challenge would be a breeze. You know...shoot the cat... she's always napping anyway. Then today, she decided to be Miss Alert. I finally got her to nap, but not in a spot with good light. So....just saying...not satisfied, but this was the best I could do. I'm feeling so low on inspiration lately. I think I need a nap!

Our Daily Challenge - "I am":

Hello, my name is Barb and I AM A BOKEHOLIC! I think I need a 12 step program! :)

This candle holder is one of my fondest memories of childhood Christmases. I love the sweet sound the little bells make when the angels turn around.

BTW....Right after I took this shot, I bumped my tripod and it toppled over and smacked the wood floor (with my expensive macro lens). Glass everywhere! As far as I can tell it was only the UV filter that was damaged, but the filter frame was so bent my husband had to work for a long time to PRY it off the lens. We're hoping the lens's threads are not stripped or damaged so I can put a new filter on. When I first picked up the camera all I got was error messages, but after several times of turning off and on, it sprang to life and seems to be working fine. Macro seems to work fine too. Dodged a bullet there, I think! Fingers crossed that I can get a new filter on since I am 100% sure that is what spared my lens.

Our Daily Challenge - "Spiky":

Have you ever noticed how crusty we sometimes act on the outside when we're feeling soft and squishy on the inside? Do these barriers really protect us or do they imprison us? I think letting people see our fears and struggles opens the door for genuine, deep friendship. It's scary, but worth it! Even this sweet gum pod needs to break down its tough exterior and crack open to release seeds to propagate. There's a lesson there, I think.

282/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "Wide-Angle minimalism":

This definitely was not my challenge! I just loved the example photos in the link we were given. Loved the isolated feeling they captured. Unfortunately, we're pretty well socked in the city here...not too many wide open spaces. And after months of our boring Texas skies with no clouds, which would have been great for this challenge, we actually had plenty of clouds today. lol. I experimented with putting the horizon much higher, filling the frame with mostly water and very little sky, but I just didn't like it as well as this one. So...here it is. My best shot...no pun intended! I saw a beautiful spot as I was driving to this location....a green field with a small pond and a bank of trees behind...just green, green, with one lonely tree full of fall color. It would have been perfect, but there was no place to pull off the road and park. :( I did, however enjoy my walk around Bob Woodruff park on this crisp, cool day...and it was good for me to pull back and take a wide angle shot for a change! :)

252/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "In the mood":

My apologies for changing my submission. I posted something earlier that was actually shot before the challenge, but placed into a diptych today. No one complained, but I wasn't sure if it was bending the ODC rules and I actually did have access to a model for a few minutes this afternoon. I've wanted to try a dark, moody shot like this for a while, so today's challenge was a good one to work with. And that's pretty much how I've felt today too...in a serious funk. I'm thankful it doesn't happen often. I'm off to choir rehearsal, which will probably help snap me out of it. In the meantime,....sigh. I hope your day has been better than mine! I'll catch up with your shots tonight.

I love to catch little snippets of real life. We had a great day with the grands Friday...beautiful weather, a walk to the playground, sidewalk chalk, bubbles after nap time, and a birthday celebration for Hannah's aunt and daddy. We packed a lot of smiles into the day, but Hannah bumped her mouth on the swing and there were BIG tears. I snapped this on the way home as G-Pa was comforting. I know I'm looking through "Grammy goggles", but I love it.

Our little anole was back and posed for me. I was wishing he'd puff out his throat...looks like he's about to, but he never did. He puffs it out and it turns bright red, but I think it's mainly to show off for his girlfriend. lol

This is the first time I've posted in a week. I think I'm going through withdrawal. :) Things are getting busier for our remodel. Work doesn't begin until early July, but I have to pack up 6 rooms in the meantime. Yikes! Any idea how much stuff you accumulate in 30 years in the same house? All this to say I'm sorry I've been such a poor contact recently.

278/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "Going Green":

Because of our current drought, we are more acutely aware of how precious our resource of water is. We do what we can to conserve every drop. Our latest plan is to buy rain barrels and keep them under our gutters to hopefully recycle that water to plants. Of course, that will only work if we actually get rainfall. I couldn't resist this shot this morning as it is so rare for us to find water droplets on our plants in the morning. Today it was foggy and WET when I woke up. Yay! I hope to try this again sometime. There are things I'd like to improve, but I'm out of time and the water is gone anyway. lol

BTW, after this shot I turned my back on my tripod and a few seconds later heard it fall....with my camera and macro lens attached!!! Thankfully, it fell into soft grass and seems to be working fine. Yikes!!!

Our Daily Challenge - "Treat yourself" and "Complimentary colors":

We are still completely immersed in our remodel project. We are big "do it yourself" folks, but this project is so large we hired out the labor. We've been amazed at how much time it has still demanded of us. There are so many decisions and we want to be very available to keep an eye on things...not to mention the time it took to move most of our stuff into storage. We've missed a few of our Grammy Days because of that, but yesterday we took time off to enjoy the whole day with Hannah and Abigail. What a treat!!!! And Hannah enjoyed a few minutes of relaxation on the porch swing too.

Funny story: We are staying in a neighbor's home and Hannah was very hesitant the first time she visited us here. I walked her around, pointing out little things I knew she would enjoy...including the toys our neighbor was kind enough to leave out for her. She was quiet and observant for all of that, until she saw our alphabet refrigerator magnets that I brought with us. She loves those things! She played happily for quite a while as I waited in the living room. She bounced into the room regularly to show me things. "Grammy! Look....it's a J for Jump....or it's a M for Mommy!"...excited about each one. Then, as she headed back to the refrigerator she said, "I'm gonna go finish my work now." LOL!!!! She's TWO! Guess she needed that ride on the porch swing after all that work. Ha ha!

Thank you for your patience with me over the past weeks. I have been a rather poor contact. I hope that will improve soon! I've been thankful to at least pick up my camera for the last few days!

M4H 52 Week Project - "Pride and Joy":

Putting this up one day late, but I had a super busy week and never shot anything that fit the theme. :( At any rate, these three are definitely my pride and joy. Our sweet daughter has responded to some of life's toughest blows with a growing faith and genuine joy. And she is SUCH a good mother.!!! It's hard not to be proud of that! And the littles in the tutus???....PURE JOY! We have been anxiously waiting for our first day of nice weather when I was off work to have a picnic at the Arboretum. So much fun...and what a great way to start the week!

BTW...Abigail had a major major melt down right after this shot. They were stuck in traffic on the way there, so she'd been confined in her car seat for more than an hour. Plus no morning nap. One TIRED little girl!

Hannah seemed pretty "shell-shocked" the first day. At barely 2 yr. old, she'd been talking a lot about baby sister, but I don't think she understood much. On day 2, she looked much more comfortable. That afternoon as she ate her snack, here was our conversation:

Hannah: Hannah is SO excited!

Me: You're excited? What are you excited about?

Hannah: Baby ABIGAIL! (in a sing song voice)

Then she held an imaginary baby in her arms and rocked back and forth, saying "Hannah HUG baby Abigail!"

So sweet!

357/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "Environmental portrait":

Well, my first 2 ideas fell through for today, so imagine my delight when our home was suddenly surrounded by workmen! Not only did the tree service guys come, but the roofers did too. Yep...replacing our roof after only 2 years, thanks to the massive hail storm we had 2 months ago. Hoping this guy can save our beloved maple! He and his buddies were as comfortable as monkeys climbing around in our tree.

Special thanks to Hsin Tai Liu www.flickr.com/photos/46461979@N06/ for taking time to share some of his tips with me about photographing strangers. Chief among them were the words "NO FEAR". :) So, I marched right out there and asked these guys if they would mind me photographing them. Hsin reminded me that appearing confident puts the subject at ease, so I purposed to look like I knew what I was doing even if I was quaking in my sneakers. :) I had to stay a fair distance away for safety, so I used my 105mm to pull in a little closer. Besides...that big honkin' lens makes me look like a real photographer. lol

Our Daily Challenge - "A Sense of History":

An overcast, cold, windy day today...too cold for two little girls with coughs to play outside. Abigail has a recent fascination with our little antique rocking chair. Low light... toddler who was rocking constantly (and signing "please" in ASL, hence the motion blur on her hand)...super high ISO...cluttered background (hello...serious vignette..lol). Really kind of a mess technically, but all that noise and blur converted pretty easily to vintage. Especially with the little hat. I bought that hat when Hannah was a baby...envisioning little naked portraits with a string a pearls. But Hannah never would wear the hat...screamed every time we put it on her. Abigail is a whole different animal. She LOVED the hat!

See this guy? Notice how healthy he looks. Now, understand that 1 year after he married our daughter, he was faced with stage 4 renal failure, the removal of one kidney, and 18 grueling months on dialysis. Every time I see him play with his girls, I appreciate his strength and energy, because it has not always been that way. We are forever grateful for the family who during their profound grief in losing their son, chose to help someone else by donating his organs. Nathan's life has been profoundly impacted...and that sweet little girl hanging around his neck probably wouldn't be here without the new kidney he received. I hope we never stop remembering to be grateful for what we have all been given. (And yes, I hope everyone who reads this considers registering as an organ donor. It is an opportunity to change someone's life forever!)

This challenge is as strange for me as the "exotic" one. I'm not particularly drawn to things I would consider exotic or luxurious. I'm very aware tho' that even my simple pleasures are luxuries many people can't enjoy. For instance, I'm blessed to work part time, so Fridays are generally Grammy Day for me. I treasure the time I have with Hannah! And I'm thankful my daughter can enjoy the luxury of being a full time mom too. We had a wonderful time together this morning. It took us 30 minutes to walk around the block, because we had to stop to look at every leaf, and acorn. I think that must be genetic! ;)
