Many many years ago while on our honeymoon, Marg and I stayed a night at a little lodge along the Central California Coast. While waiting for dinner we slipped into the cocktail lounge for a drink where an elderly gentleman was working the piano bar. I told him we were recently married and he played a couple of sentimental love tunes for us. I put a little money in his tip jar. Later, while on his break he told me that he was once a concert pianist who grew too old to hold up to the rigors of the stage. It was a little sad to see him playing out the string, playing for tips in this little bar where patrons were sparse. I kind of wish I'd tipped him a little more than I did.

The well worn & vintage sign of the infamous Marie’s Crisis Café located in the heart of Greenwich Village, a very popular piano bar where you must join in singing show tunes from Broadway and Disney tunes around the piano. The moniker here is “Come to sing or don’t come at all” and it may well be the only non-amplified, sing-along piano bar in New York City.
Interestingly enough this location has a lot of history which is cleverly incorporated into its name. The Crisis refers to one of the locations earliest residents, though the fact is that he only lived at this location one month before his demise. “The American Crisis” was a 1776 series of pamphlets written by none other than Englishman Thomas Paine which outlined the logical reasons why America had to sever its ties to mother England. General George Washington found the first article so inspiring he ordered that it be read to the troops at Valley Forge. “The American Crisis” followed Paine’s more famous pamphlet, “Common Sense”, which sold an amazing 500,000 copies when the population in the 13 English colonies was just 3 million. I always remember the famous line from “The American Crisis” which states “These are the times that try men's souls."
Paine was born in 1737 in Thetford England, emigrated from there to America in 1774 where he met Benjamin Franklin and the rest is history, American history that is. After the American Revolution he moved to France where he fell into disfavor with the French Revolutionaries when he protested against the execution of Louis XVI and just barely escaped the guillotine during the Reign of Terror by pure luck. Perhaps dumb luck would be a better way to put it you see, the outside of his cell had the chalk mark that clearly condemned him to death, but Englishman was very ill and his cell door was opened to allow him to breath fresher air concealing the chalk mark. This is one of those things that deceased comedian George Carlin would question the contrary nature of making the sick guy better before he gets his head removed, really?
I digress; James Monroe got Thomas Paine back to United States where a very ill Paine resided in several locations in New York, finally moving to a wood frame house where Madame Bonneville cared for him that stood at this location behind the dwelling which faced Columbia Street in 1809. He had suffered multiple strokes and after about a month he passed away. There is very tattered plaque on the outside of 59 Grove Street placed by the Greenwich Village Historical Society in 1923 commemorating the patriot Thomas Paine.
The brick building to which this sign is attached was one of five matching Federal-style brick-faced homes built in 1839 by attorney William A. Thompson who tore down the wood framed house that Thomas Paine died in which had survived the widening/paving of Columbia Street which became Grove Street. The original intention for the 3 story homes was for middle class families. It is rumored (not confirmed because let’s face who kept records like that) that part of the edifice was used as whorehouse from 1850 to 1890; there are records of tenants well into the prohibition period here in the United States. In the lower level was a speakeasy that was raided by the feds in 1929. The “Marie” part of the name comes from its famous beautiful blonde and musically talented proprietor, a French immigrant by the name of Marie Du Mont who took over the lower level in 1935. Ms. Du Mont opened the establishment as "bohemian restaurant with piano music" and eventually bought the entire building.

I spotted this musician rocking the main club at Harrahs in Las Vegas. To be an entertainer in this day and age takes concentration and discipline. It's not enough that you have to contend with rowdy bar patrons, and the incessant chirping and binging of the one armed bandits, but toss in multiple big screen televisions blaring competing sporting events and you add the final chaotic touch to an already surrealistic scene.
This woman was obviously a veteran of many Vegas gigs. She played through the cacophony of sounds like she was alone in the empty silence of the Taj Mahal. In fact, I think she was watching the nightly news hour as she crooned her way through "Doing it My Way."
In some ways I think that this entertainer may be a descendent of those piano players that played in the western salons back in the 19th century, remaining impervious to wild drunken card games, barroom brawls, and shootouts. The lineage lives on.
