A few months ago we introduced you to Ahlam, an 8-year-old Syrian refugee living in Lebanon. Ahlam lost her leg when she was hit by shrapnel during a bombing raid in her home town of Hama in Syria. At the time, Ahlam was enthusiastically looking forward to her ‘new leg’.
Ahlam has had her artificial leg for a few months now and as the photo shows, she is busy taking life on again. As refugees living in an informal camp, life is still difficult for Ahlam’s family, but at least now she is regaining her independence, playing with her friends and doing more of the things she likes to do.

Sensation from the skin is relayed along limb and trunk peripheral nerves to the spinal nerves that enter the spinal cord. The spinal cord then relays the sensation message to the brain and our awareness. physiotherapy graphics.
Each spinal nerve relays sensation messages from a particular area of skin. This skin area is called a dermatome, and each dermatome is named after the spinal nerve that carries its message. physiotherapy graphics.
For instance the C5 dermatome on the shoulder uses the C5 spinal nerve near the base of the neck to relay its message to the brain.
There are seven spinal nerve pairs in the neck, called C2 to C8, which supply dermatomes on the head, neck and arms. This is useful to know as the sensation of pain in a dermatome may be due to irritation to the corresponding spinal nerve that is causing it to send a misleading message to the brain. For instance, compression of the C5 spinal nerve by a herniated disc or degenerative osteophyte in the neck can trigger in the brain the sensation of pain or numbness over the C5 dermatome at the shoulder.

Months ago the Parkinson's Clinic asked for physiotherapy for him and a few days ago a young man turned up to assess him in his home setting. This schedule is very insistent because it would show up if there was a tick missing. The physio also leaned on a local firm to get them to provide some help for us. At least I think he did because we were already in touch with them, but they suddenly became much more helpful. Slow and steady we're making progress!

Demolition work is underway on Charles Luney House, on the corner of Manchester St and Oxford Tce.
The building was home to ACC and the Public Trust before the Canterbury earthquakes, and previously housed the Canterbury District Health Board's corporate office before it moved to Princess Margaret Hospital.
A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokesman said the property was now owned by the Crown and would form part of the proposed East Frame.
The East Frame is the largest of three green borders to be established around the perimetre of the central city.
The Crown has acquired about 98 per cent of the land needed for the project, which will feature open spaces, walk and cycleways, eateries and residential developments.
The Central Christchurch Development Unit has committed $31 million for work on the public spaces, which is expected to begin late this year.

Greening the CBD. The seeds are being sown for the transformation of several empty central-city sites.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has begun "greening" work on five large sites within the north and east frames, to be transformed into open public spaces within the next month.
The sites will be covered with top soil and seeded with grass, with some areas providing more central city car parking.

Shany’s mother had stopped doing physiotherapy with her daughter because she thought she needed specialist equipment. Now that Shany and her mum receive visits from a physiotherapist in their own home, Shany’s condition is improving.
