The night after that, the Ahr flood disaster struck. My thoughts and sympathy go to those who have lost their lives, loved ones and livelihoods. Do not give up. Together we can do it.
After the sun set behind the clouds this evening, I felt it might be a good idea to wait some more minutes... These fantastic colors were my reward.
My favorite motiv in the beautiful Stotel Forest.
I combined two exposures by using the layer mask technic in GIMP - 15 seconds for the flowing water and 1 second for the trees to avoid too much movement in the branches.
A nice story besides, the last two times I spent time here taking photos, I met lost hikers and kindly explained them how to get back to the stony road in the east.
I love this place so much and I hope it will stay in this condition as long as possible.
As to all of my photos I also added GPS coordinates to this one with my wish in case you feel to come here and enjoy this place as much as I do: Please respect the nature and be aware it is home and shelter for so many treasures. Let us leave this place the way we would like to find it the time we come back here again.

Suddenly a window in the clouds opened to let me see a little bit of that evening´s sunset aftershow.
When I stood behind my camera, pressing the shutter and seeing a good result on the display, I knew for sure I finally arrived:
This deep feeling of peace of mind and absolute serenity.
It was more than worth to come here that evening.

The sky was on fire and I was allowed to witness - a truly spectacular show.
It took so long that I had time to take a series of portrait shots. I later merged them into a panorama in GIMP.

In April I was drawn to the meadows of the river Hamme that evening.
Some of them were still flooded and the fantastic clouds combined with the setting sun resulted in this wonderful reflection...
I had planned to explore this area for a long time, but so far this project has failed due to my projects in the western Blockland near Neu St Jürgen.
It was only the fantastic pictures of the talented photographer Michael Hömske that gave me the decisive push.

Im April zog es mich am Abend erneut in die Hammewiesen.
Sie waren zum Teil noch geflutet und zusammen mit den fantastischen Wolken und der untergehenden Sonne ergab sich diese wunderschöne Spiegelung...
Ich hatte schon seit längerer Zeit vor diese Gegend genauer zu erkunden aber bisher scheiterte dieses Vorhaben an meinen Projekten im westlichen Blockland bei Neu St Jürgen.
Erst die fantastischen Bilder des talentierten Fotografen Michael Hömske haben mir schließlich den entscheidenden Ruck gegeben.

Then the sun broke through and let the stream shine. I was so moved (and in a hurry to take a picture of this moment before it's over) that I forgot to take off the polarizing filter. As a result, there were many reflections on the filter pane in this extreme backlight ... But this is precisely what creates a dreamy mood. To linger in this place in this moment - very close together with nature - these gifts brighten up everyday life and let you forget the routine for a brief moment. Let us be grateful for that.
Dann brach die Sonne durch und ließ den Bach erstrahlen. Ich war so ergriffen (und in Eile diesen Moment abzulichten bevor er vorbei ist), daß ich vergaß den Polfilter abzumachen. Dadurch kam es in diesem extremen Gegenlicht zu vielen Reflektionen auf der Scheibe des Filters... Aber gerade dadurch kommt eine verträumte Stimmung auf. An diesem Ort in diesem Augeblick zu verweilen - ganz nah zusammen mit der Natur - diese Geschenke hellen den Alltag auf und lassen für einen kurzen Moment die Routine vergessen. Lasst uns dafür dankbar sein.
This is the last picture I took that rainy evening in the Stotel Forest. Directly behind me is the already mentioned wooden palisade and although it looks very interesting, I decided to use these roots, washed down by the clear water, as a motif instead. I wonder who will withstand this situation - the water or the tree? I don't think we will find out within the next 10 years. Maybe both could coexist in peace and harmony?
Dies ist die letzte Aufnahme, die ich an dem regnerischen Abend im Stotelwald gemacht habe. Direkt hinter mir ist die bereits erwähnte Holzpalisade und obwohl sie sehr interessant aussieht, habe ich mich stattdessen für diese vom klaren Wasser unterspülten Wurzeln als Motiv entschieden. Ich frage mich, wer dieser Situation standhalten wird – das Wasser oder der Baum? Ich denke, wir werden es nicht innerhalb der nächsten 10 Jahren erfahren. Vielleicht könnten beide in Frieden und Harmonie zusammenleben.
Nach meinem Ausflug in den Stoteler Wald machte ich noch einen kurzen Abstecher zum Windpark Langeheide bei Heilshorn. Mit dem seitlich einfallenden Licht der untergehenden Sonne ergab sich dieses schöne Farbenspiel.
Ich persönlich finde Windräder unglaublich ästhetisch und ich kann sagen, dass sie neben der Natur eines meiner Lieblingsmotive sind. Wenngleich auch mit eines der schwersten, Stichwort stürzende Linien (Kamera nach oben geneigt) und Bewegungsunschärfe (zu lange Belichtungszeiten).
Bei all der sehr emotional geführten Debatte um das Für und Wider halte ich sie für einen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil der Energiewende, die wir so dringend benötigen.
Gleichzeitig möchte ich die Argumente der Gegner nicht einfach wegwischen. Ein wesentlicher Nachteil sind die Schallemissionen, die bei entsprechender Windlage in den Gärten der naheliegenden Siedlungen zu hören sind.
Wie ist eure Meinung zu Windrädern?

After my trip to the Stotel forest, I made a short detour to the Langeheide wind farm near Heilshorn. With the light from the setting sun falling from the side, this beautiful play of colors resulted.
Personally, I find wind turbines incredibly aesthetic and I can say that, along with nature, they are one of my favorite motifs. Albeit with one of the difficultiest, the keyword falling lines (camera tilted upwards) and motion blur (too long exposure times).
With all the very emotional debates about the pros and cons, I consider them to be an indispensable part of the energy transition that we so urgently need.
At the same time, I don't want to just wipe away the arguments of the opponents. A major disadvantage are the noise emissions that can be heard in the gardens of the nearby settlements when there is a corresponding wind situation.
What is your opinion on wind turbines?

Hi there,
there was a beautiful situation of clouds and sunrays in the meadows of the Hamme river near Neu Helgoland.
The GND8 Filter was not strong enough to coup with this heavy backlight so I combined two different exposures in GIMP.
During post processing I somehow fell into a mediation like state and when I woke up, this surreal like monchrome image was the result ;-) .

As I continued my journey through the rainy forest, I found these mushrooms on a tree stump. I had neither a macro nor a telephoto lens with me, so a much more dramatic shot would certainly have been possible. So I used my standard 18-55 zoom lens. It was already on my camera anyway and I didn't plan to change the lens that day - there was too great a risk of dirt getting lost inside my camera. At 49 mm and the right distance to the motif, this composition resulted, with which I am very satisfied. I think it's wonderful how the mushroom hats shine in the rain. I was amazed to find them at this time of year anyway. I later learned from my daughter that this species can be found in the forest all year round.
Als ich meine Reise durch den regnerischen Wald fortsetze, fand ich diese Pilze auf einem Baumstumpf. Ich hatte weder ein Macro- noch ein Teleobjektiv dabei, damit wäre sicherlich eine wesentlich dramatischere Aufnahme möglich gewesen. Also griff ich auf mein 18-55er Standardzoom Objektiv zurück. Es war ohnehin bereits auf meiner Kamera drauf und ich hatte nicht vor an diesem Tag das Objektiv zu wechseln - zu groß war die Gefahr, dass sich Dreck in das Innere meiner Kamera verirrt. Mitt 49 mm und dem passenden Abstand zum Motiv ergab sich diese Komposition, mit der ich sehr zufrieden bin. Ich finde es wunderschön, wie die Hüte der Pilze im Regen glänzen. Ich war ohnehin erstaunt sie zu dieser Jahreszeit zu finden. Von meiner Tochter lernte ich später, dass man diese Art aber während des ganzen Jahres im Wald finden kann.
I had an appointment for dinner with the mosquitoes that evening - I was on the menue. As long as I was moving, they left me alone. But as soon as I set up my tripod and adjusted the settings on my camera, they pounced on me. But what are a few mosquito bites and the resulting poor sleep compared to such a fantastic light situation?

Ich war an diesem Abend zum Essen mit den Mücken verabredet - Ich war das Essen. So lange ich in Bewegung war, ließen sie mich in Ruhe. Aber sobald ich mein Stativ aufstellte und die Einstellungen an meiner Kamera vornahm, stürzten sie sich auf mich. Aber was sind schon ein paar Mückenstiche und der daraus resultierende schlechte Schlaf im Vergleich zu so einer fantastischen Lichtsituation?

It was pouring rain when I got to the forest, but I still stuck to my plan to follow the course of the stony creek Schönebecker Aue. My hope to find more beautiful spots that stand out as a good motif came true. Since it was still raining, I moved on, following the northern edge of the forest. I'll find my way back, I have a good sense of direction, I thought to myself. I turned right into a narrow deer crossing and from a distance I saw this fallen tree. I circled it several times in search of the perfect composition and then I found it: Standing in front of the crown, looking down the trunk towards the root. This time I opted for my 18-55 kit lens, there should be as little sky as possible in the picture in order to draw full attention to the forest and the main subject. The rain created a fantastic atmosphere, which I was able to reinforce later with a slight orton effect on the PC. I was very happy when I finished taking this photo. The rain subsided, the sun came out and I moved on towards the forest path. Once there, I quickly found the ditch that would later flow into the Schönebecker Aue creek, which I remembered from the winter before last. With his help I quickly got back on the forest path where his crossing is bordered by a beautiful palisade made of tree trunks. Firmly convinced to get back to the creek, if I follow the path to the left, it happened: I got lost.
I was not aware that this path was preceded by a t-junction and that it no longer ran to the west but instead to the south.
All I really had to do was follow the ditch and I would be back at the creek. Instead, after a while I found myself back in the center of the forest and realized that the way back to the creek and thus to my car would take a little longer that evening. Although the next day in the home office was exhausting due to my tiredness, it was worth it. This experience of being one with the forest, listening to the raindrops and the sounds of the nature is something very special, a different kind of meditation.
Es regnete in Strömen als ich im Wald ankam aber dennoch hielt ich an meinem Plan fest, dem Lauf der Schönebecker Aue zu folgen. Meine Hoffnung weitere schöne Stellen zu finden, die sich als gutes Motiv hervorheben, erfüllten sich. Da es aber noch immer in Strömen regnete, zog ich weiter, dem nördlichen Waldrand folgend. Ich werde den Weg zurück schon finden, ich habe ja einen guten Orientierungssinn, dachte ich mir. Ich bog nach rechts in einen schmalen Wildwechsel ein und schon von weitem viel mir dieser umgestürzte Baum auf. Ich umrundete ihn mehrmals auf der Suche nach der perfekten Komposition und dann fand ich sie: Vor der Krone stehend, den Blick den Stamm entlang Richtung Wurzel. Ich entschied mich dieses Mal für mein 18-55er Kit Objektiv, es sollte so wenig Himmel wie möglich mit aufs Bild um die Aufmerksamkeit voll und ganz auf den Wald und das Hauptmotiv zu lenken. Der Regen sorgte für eine fantastische Atmosphäre, die ich später am PC noch mit einem leichten Orton Effekt verstärken konnte. Ich freute mich sehr, als ich mit der Aufnahme fertig war. Der Regen ließ nach, die Sonne kam raus und ich zog weiter in Richtung Waldweg. Dort angekommen fand ich schnell den Bach, der später wieder in die Schönebecker Aue münden würde, den ich noch vom vorletzen Winter in Erinnerung hatte. Mit seiner Hilfe kam ich schnell wieder auf den Waldweg wo seine Querung durch eine schöne Palisade aus Baumstämmen eingefasst ist. Fest davon überzeugt zurück zur Aue zu gelangen, wenn ich dem Weg nach links folge, passierte es: Ich verlief mich.
Mir war nicht bewusst, dass diesem Weg eine T-Kreuzung vorangegangen war und somit nicht mehr nach Westen sondern stattdessen nun nach Süden verlief.
Ich hätte eigentlich nur dem Bach weiter folgen müssen, und ich wäre wieder an der Aue angelagt. Stattdessen fand ich mich nach einiger Zeit wieder im Zentrum des Waldes und mir wurde bewusst, dass der Weg zurück zur Aue und somit zu meinem Auto an diesem Abend noch etwas länger dauern würde. Obwohl der nächste Tag im Homeoffice auf Grund meiner Müdigkeit anstrengend wurde, hat es sich gelohnt. Dieses Erlebnis eins zu sein mit dem Wald, den Regentropfen und den Geräuschen der Natur zu lauschen ist etwas ganz Besonderes, eine andere Art der Meditation.
On one of my winter excursions to the Schönebecker Aue in the Stoteler Wald in January 2020 I noticed this fallen tree.
I took a few photos, but quickly sorted them out at home on the PC - among many other reasons, mainly because of the lack of leaves on the surrounding vegetation.
I visited the area again in the spring of the following year.
With a lot of green on the ground and the surrounding trees, this motif now looks much more exciting.
I wanted to get something mysterious, not immediately visible in my picture. It was clear that this would not work from an upright position and shot from chest height.
Perhaps from a little distance after all, with a few branches in the foreground that partially obscure the view of the main subject ... But I opted for a dramatic perspective from the ground.
After a few tries, I found this delicate forest flower that would work well as a foreground. The overexposed sky and a light glowing effect also create an implied mystical atmosphere.
So that the shadows don't turn out too dark in the backlight, I combined two different exposures. So that you can see more of the trees in the background rising into the bright sky.
Already during the recording in RAW format a nice green and white contrast was created, which I later kept on the PC with Darktable and GIMP and only slightly increased.
The overall rather cool color scheme emphasizes the mystical feeling already mentioned above.
The fallen tree is marked with a red cross. I suspect that forest workers will be picking him up soon.
The Stoteler Wald is developing more and more into my favorite forest. Although there are some forests here in our area - including Schmidts Kiefern and the Elm Wald in Garlstedt and more near Axstedt and Hagen - the atmosphere in none is as beautiful and mysterious as in the Stoteler Wald.
Perhaps it is because its western end in particular, but also its overall appearance, seems more untouched than in other forests.

Bei einen meiner winterlichen Ausflüge zur Schönebecker Aue im Stoteler Wald im Januar 2020 fiel mir dieser umgestürzte Baum auf.
Ich machte ein paar Fotos, sortierte sie zu Hause am PC aber schnell wieder aus - neben vielen anderen Gründen vor allem wegen fehlender Blätter an der umgebenden Vegetation.
Im Frühling des folgenden Jahres besuchte ich die Gegend erneut.
Mit viel Grün am Boden und an den umstehenden Bäumen wirkt dieses Motiv nun viel aufregender.
Ich wollte etwas Geheimnisvolles, nicht sofort Ersichtliches auf mein Bild bekommen. Das dies nicht von einem aufrechten Standpunkt und aus Brusthöhe geschossen klappen würde, war klar.
Vielleicht doch aus ein wenig Entfernung, mit ein paar Ästen im Vordergrund, die den Blick auf das Hauptmotiv zum Teil verdecken... Aber ich entschied mich für eine dramatische Perspektive vom Boden aus.
Nach einigen Versuchen fand ich diese filigrane Waldblume, die sich gut als Vordergrund eignen würde. Der überbelichtete Himmel und ein leichter Leucht-Effekt sorgen zusätzlich für eine angedeutete mystische Atmosphäre.
Damit die Schatten im Gegenlicht nicht zu dunkel ausfallen, habe ich zwei unterschiedliche Belichtungen kombiniert. wodurch auch mehr von den in den hellen Himmel ragenden Bäumen im Hintergrund zu erkennen ist.
Bereits während der Aufnahme im RAW Format entstand ein schöner grün weiß Kontrast, den ich später am PC mit Darktable und GIMP beibehielt und nur minimal verstärkt habe.
Die insgesamt eher kühl gehaltene Farbgestaltung betont noch einmal das bereits oben erwähnte mystische Gefühl.
Der umgestürzte Baum ist mit einem roten Kreuz markiert. Ich vermute, dass Waldarbeiter ihn bald abholen werden.
Der Stoteler Wald entwickelt sich mehr und mehr zu meinem Lieblingswald. Zwar gibt es hier in unserer Gegend einige Wälder - unter anderem Schmidts Kiefern und den Elm Wald in Garlstedt und noch weitere bei Axstedt und Hagen - aber in keinem ist die Atmosphäre so schön und geheimnisvoll wie im Stoteler Wald.
Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass insbesondere sein westliches Ende aber auch sein gesamtes Erscheinungsbild unberührter wirkt als in anderen Wäldern.

A new location to a photographer is like a kid in a candy store. There is so much to choose from, one needs to stop and look before clicking. This angle gave me a great reflection of this wonderful, almost tired looking tree. In the summer it is probably filled with leaves, but for now it frames the stream nicely.
After a full day of shooting on our way from Batchawana Bay to Wawa. We had checked into our accommodations and had a dinner reservation at a highly recommended restaurant and arrived to this sce4ne from their outdoor deck looking over the Michipicoten River. Afraid the scene wouldn't last until I went back to the vehicle to grab my camera, I shot this with my phone.

This Bridge instantly became a "must see" when I first learned of it while researching locations for our trip. It was one of the first places added to a map of locations to visit for photography. Labeled "the oldest stone bridge in the highlands", whether true or not, it certainly was something to see and a little challenging to find just the right composition.
