During a mid-October drive through Shasta County, California, I stopped at the Bridge Picnic Area along Hat Creek in search of some early fall color. It was still a touch premature for full autumn hues, but a few trees by the water were already shifting nicely. The low morning sun filtering through the foliage across the creek caught my eye, giving the scene a soft glow that felt worth stopping for. Not long after, a blanket of gray clouds rolled in and the mood completely changed—I was glad I’d made that stop when I did.

Hat Creek is a classic Northern California stream, winding through pine forests and volcanic terrain between Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Pit River. Its cold, clear waters are spring-fed, making it one of the most consistent and celebrated trout fisheries in the state. The creek’s gentle flow and varied sections—ranging from wide, slow glides to fast, rocky runs—offer both scenic beauty and prime angling. Hat Creek’s origins lie in ancient lava fields, and its name dates back to early pioneers who reportedly lost a hat there—an unremarkable event that left a lasting mark on California geography.

Backdrops are an essential part of most photography, videography and even film making. For the studio photographer using the right backdrops to accentuate the costuming of your subject is critical. Having a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures is paramount for any well equipped facility.

Backdrops come in a variety of textile materials, either Solid Color, Patterns, or Scenic designs.

There are a couple of things to look out for when buying a backdrop. A good quality backdrop should incorporate a sewn-in rod-loop along one edge so that the crossbar can be inserted, this is the ultimate mounting method. They should also have a sewed finish on all 4 sides, drastically minimizing the possibility of a snag or deterioration of the screen. I started out with the one on the left because my optical mouse was not tracking properly on the wood-grain table top.

Then as I just started using this as a backdrop [move keyboard, photgraph something], I bought more colors from Amazon [the brand is AOTHIA].

Ignore any curved portions, I just took the others out of the box. They lay flat when relaxed.

They call it a PU leather desk pad. There are more colors & sizes, this size is 23.6 x 17.5 [inches, I am an American after all] ;)

Texture is good for mousing-around.

The far right is what all of them look like on the back, very minor fuzzy texture.

I have no idea if you can get all colors in all sizes, I do know that not all color options were available in SMALL when I picked up the other 4.

These have proven to be more durable than construction paper, which is what I used to use for small stills. And I get to swap mouse pad colors to boot.
