January 12, 1932 - April 11, 2022
Robert O'Neal Buck, 90, died April 11, 2022, at Northcrest Community. A celebration of life service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday April 18, 2022, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church 159 Sheldon Ave, Ames, IA 50014. A private burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Bob was born January 12, 1932, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, the third of four boys born to Harold G. and Margaret M. Buck. He attended Welch School from kindergarten (where he met his future wife, Anne Knuths) through 9th grade. At Ames High School, he was very active in sports, earning 9 varsity letters in football, basketball, and track and captain in basketball. He graduated in 1950. Bob & Anne were married Aug 24th, 1951. After Bob's 1954 graduation from I.S.U., they spent the next 2 years at Ft. McClellan in Alabama and Fort Lewis in Washington while Bob served in the Army, he participated in 6 atomic blasts most in six-foot-deep trenches and training troops in making maps of radiation isograms. They returned to Ames in 1956, and in 1961 started Buck Construction Co. Inc., which specialized in custom homes, remodeling, and land development. They worked together in the business, with Bob as Pres. & Treas. And Anne serving as V.P., Sec, Bookkeeper, & decorator until retiring in the year 2000.
He has been a member of the Collegiate Presbyterian Church his whole life, serving as a trustee, and held offices in the Ames Jaycees, Ames Homebuilder Assoc., and served time on the Ames Public Library board, Octagon, Ames Chamber of Commerce and Ames School advisory council.
He is survived by his wife, Anne K. Buck, of Ames, sons Bruce (Charla) Buck (Osprey, FL) and Steven Buck (Ames, IA), daughter Lisa Buck Marino (Ames, IA) and 2 grandchildren, Robby (Marissa) (Glendale, CA) & Elisabeth Marino (Ames, IA) and brother J. Ben (Sarah) Buck of Ames and nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death and brothers Bill and Jim.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Ames Historical Museum.

Anne Knuths Buck, 90, of Ames, Iowa, died Saturday, December 3, 2022. Services will be held Thursday, December 15, at 2:30 p.m. at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 Sheldon Ave, Ames (the same Church where she and her future husband, Bob Buck, met as 5 year olds, and were married there as 19 year olds). A private burial will be held at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Anne was born February 4, 1932, in her family home, the 13th of 14 children born to M. E. & M. F. Knuths. She attended Welch School from kindergarten through 9th grade, graduating from Ames High School in 1950. Bob and Anne were married August 24, 1951. After Bob's 1954 graduation from I.S.U., they spent the next two years at Ft. McClellan in Alabama and Fort Lewis in Washington while Bob served in the Army Chemical Corps. They returned to Ames, and in 1961 started Buck Construction Co., Inc. They worked together in the business with Anne serving as V.P., Sec., bookkeeper & interior decorator for 37 years.
She has been a member of the Collegiate Presbyterian Church her whole life and also a member of Chapter HN PEO, Mary Greeley Hospital Auxiliary, Ames Homebuilders Auxiliary, and Ames High Parent Advisory Council.
She is survived by her sons Bruce (Charla) Buck of Osprey, FL, and Steven Buck, Ames, IA, a daughter, Lisa Marino, Ames, IA, and two grandchildren, Robby (Marissa) Marino of Glendale, CA, and Elisabeth Marino of Ames, IA, and 33 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert O. Buck, four brothers, Keith, Carrol, Bob and Mike Knuths, and nine sisters, Cleo, Connie & Thelma Knuths, Carita McCullough, Clare Webster, Ione Smith, Ruth Paddock, Winnefred Butson and Darlene Walton.
Anne was proud to be a lifelong Iowan. She was grateful for all of life's blessings and regularly expressed her gratitude. She rejoiced in quality time with family and friends, gardening, butterflies, nature, demonstrating her creativity and sharing with others through art.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the Collegiate Presbyterian Church, Ames History Museum or Reiman Gardens.

February 8, 1956 - November 15, 2019
Kirk Lewis Farrar age, 63 of Ames, Iowa died on November 15, 2019 at the Israel Family Hospice House. A gathering of friends and family will be 10:30 a.m. to Noon Friday, November 22 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames; with the burial immediately following at Ames Municipal Cemetery Ames, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Farrar.
Kirk was born on February 8, 1956 in Lincoln, NE to Ralph and Mary Jo (Dunbar) Farrar. He graduated from Ames High School (1974) and the University of Iowa in Communications. Kirk was always a salesman working in several different fields from office supplies to cars and finally to food service. He loved his family, eating, and his pets with his whole heart. He charmed many a person with his smile, laugh, and easy manner. All the while, combatting Parkinson's, a chronic disease that ravaged his body for the last 26 years of his life.
Kirk is survived by his mother, Mary Jo Farrar, brothers, Kelley (Kim) Farrar, Kris (Jennifer) Farrar, nephews Sean (Sarah) Farrar and Nate Farrar. He was also adored by his great nieces and nephews, Marvin, Hunter, Aaliyah, Bozena, EmmaLee and Micah.
His celebration of life will be a Munchie-walkabout for friends, family, and assorted people that were charmed by his smile and honored his fight for life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a monetary donation for funeral services.

Paul Sondrol 62, of Ames, passed away October 20, 2018 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Memorial service will be held 1:30 pm Sunday, October 28, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Paul Charles Sondrol was born July 19, 1956 in Sioux Falls, SD to Charles and Shirley (Kruggel) Sondrol. Paul grew up in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1974. He continued his education receiving his BA at Mankato State University in Minnesota and his Masters and PhD at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. Paul was a professor of Political Science and Latin American Specialist at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Paul lived one year in Paraguay and enjoyed traveling throughout South America. He enjoyed hiking, running, talking politics and spending time with his family.
Paul is survived by his father, Charles Sondrol of Ames; son, Chase Sondrol of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Selah Sondrol of Winslow, ME; sister, Tammy (Jim) Stein of Muscatine, IA; brother, Danny (Cheryl) Sondrol of Ames, IA and several nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his mother and daughter, Chelsea.

Mark Dekovic Obituary
May 31, 1956 - August 3, 2023
Age 67, of Crystal, Minnesota, passed away August 3, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Mark was born on May 31, 1956 in Chicago, IL, to Charles and Elaine Dekovic.
Most of Mark's childhood was spent trying to grow up in Ames, IA (some would say he never did). He attended Ames High School where he fell in love with the arts, especially theater and music. Mark reveled in the stage and performing, which he carried on throughout his life. Following high school, Mark went to work for Aunt Maude's restaurant in Ames where he developed his cooking skills that would later spare his wife from her own bland hot dishes and cans of SpaghettiOs. He continued his education at Iowa State University, pursuing his love of theater through countless performances in Stars Over VEISHA, Union Board Theater, and Memorial Union Resident Summer Theater (MURST). He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design in 1983.
After moving to Minneapolis in 1983, Mark enjoyed sharing his talents with the Minnesota Shakespeare Company and cooking at various restaurants around the city before starting at McKesson Corporation where he began his 30-year career working most recently as an E-commerce Web Designer. He exited stage left into retirement in September 2022 (because who doesn't love doing web design?). The overall enjoyment-quotient at McKesson dropped 75% when he retired as he was the go-to guy for fun at many company functions, hosting and entertaining during trade shows, United Way functions, banquets, and other events. When Mark walked into the room, everyone noticed!
In 1999, Mark married his co-star, Sue Johnson, who came with an award-worthy supporting cast of Kiernan and Karlyn. He brought his authentic zest for life and his passion for fun into their lives, for which they will be forever grateful. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. His many hobbies included being an avid photographer, playing his collection of guitars, woodworking, the Chicago Bears, and spending time with family. He will be remembered for his hilarious sense of humor and his gentle kindness.
Mark is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sue; stepson Kiernan Johnson and stepdaughter Karlyn (David) Mlostek, one granddaughter Reagan Mlostek; his mother Elaine Dekovic, Ames, IA; siblings; Charles (Sara), Queens Creek, AZ; Jay (Dalila), Tabernash, CO; Lauren (Martin) Fenimore, Des Moines, IA; Julie Dekovic (Donald Duhon), Spring, TX; Elizabeth Catanesi (Deborah Walton), Nipomo, CA; 8 nephews, 3 grand-nieces, 4 grand-nephews and countless other family and friends. Preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Dekovic, Jr.
Many thanks to the nurses and doctors at Methodist Hospital and the Health Partners Frauenshuh Cancer Center for their compassion and humor. You truly are Heroes!
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 16th, 2023, at 3125 Virginia, Ave. North, Crystal, MN, from 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation at the following link: curecca.link/MarkDekovic

Fox brick art on the inside brick wall near the ground level. At The Roosevelt. Original art work intact after renovation. This was done in Mr. Connor's 6th grade art class in 1967 or 1968. The bricks were fired and put on the walls and are still there. There are 3 of these mosaics in the bricks in this stairwell, two at the bottom and one at the top.

Jane Burkholder Walker, 63, cherished mother, sister, friend and retired school principal for Bostic Elementary, passed away Friday, December 18th, 2020. She was preceded in death by father, Harvey Ralph Burkholder, and beloved husband, Mike Walker. Survivors include her mother, Kathryn Burkholder; daughters, Lindsey Walker and Lauren Walker; and sisters, Anne (Patrick) Byrne and Nancy Burkholder.
Jane was born Jane Ellen Burkholder to Kathryn (Mott) and Harvey Burkholder on March 30th, 1957 in Ames, Iowa. She was the middle child of three beautiful girls, and was blessed with loving parents and a strong community. From a very young age, Jane always knew she wanted to be a teacher, and would often “play school” with the neighborhood children and her sisters.
Jane received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary in Education from Iowa State in 1979. She then moved to Kansas City for special training in educating underrepresented students. There she met the love of her life, Michael Dean Walker, who was pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. Both were intelligent, creative thinkers with a great sense of humor. They went on many adventures together, enjoyed camping, and often took Mike’s motorcycle to explore new places. Jane and Mike married on August 7th, 1982. They lived together in Mike’s hometown of Independence, KS, before moving to Lawrence, KS. Both received Master’s degrees from the University of Kansas, and Jane completed her Masters of Science in Education.
Subsequently Jane and Mike moved to Wichita, where Mike began working for Boeing and Jane began her career for Wichita Public Schools. Jane and Mike welcomed their first child Lindsey in 1986, and second daughter Lauren in 1993. Jane was a wonderful mother who cherished her children. She used her creative skills to nurture a beautiful home filled with guitar songs, family dinners, bedtime stories, and handmade crafts, from Halloween costumes to Christmas ornaments. She gave her daughters a passion for reading and music, and the foundation to build bright futures.
In addition to raising her two children, Jane dedicated her life to educating thousands of students during her 31 year career with USD 259. Jane loved her job, and strove to give every child the tools for success. In 2000, Jane got her second Master’s degree, in Education Administration and Supervision, from Wichita State University. She went on to become first an assistant principal and then a principal, finishing her impressive career at Bostic Traditional Magnet.
After her retirement in 2017, Jane continued to seek out adventure and new experiences. She always loved going to Iowa every summer and winter, and playing games with her family. One of her favorite places to be was on the dock with her family at Lake Okoboji , listening to music, laughing, and telling stories. She also loved walking at Chisholm Creek Park, joined Adventurous Babes, and was an integral part of growing her new neighborhood in Bel Aire into a community.
Jane had a strong soul and a determination to live life to its fullest, despite tragedy. She lost her husband Mike far too soon in 2013. After his death Jane continued to speak with Mike’s spirit everyday, and felt his support and love to the end of her days. Jane beat both breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, before being diagnosed with early onset severe dementia in early 2020. Jane never lost her zest for life or her love for her family. Hers was a creative and loving spirit, and she brought that spirit to her work, her life, and her family.

The 40th reunion was amazing!! The class of 1977 always has one of the strongest most connected classes out of all the Alumni classes at AHS, and this was no exception as approximately 100 1977 classmates met and re-connected on Friday Sep 22 2017 first at an AHS football game and later at Buford's Restaurant in the Quality Inn.
Saturday, September 23 we all toured the High School then 110+ classmates met again later that day at the Quality Inn for a banquet, group photos, a short program and then another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get to this spot in time. It is something ever so special to have friends that span most, if not all of your life, especially after 40 plus years. Sunday was an awesome picnic at Brookside Park with another fun group photo, then we shed a tear and said our goodbyes and we hope to see you again soon.

Jane Burkholder Walker, 63, cherished mother, sister, friend and retired school principal for Bostic Elementary, passed away Friday, December 18th, 2020. She was preceded in death by father, Harvey Ralph Burkholder, and beloved husband, Mike Walker. Survivors include her mother, Kathryn Burkholder; daughters, Lindsey Walker and Lauren Walker; and sisters, Anne (Patrick) Byrne and Nancy Burkholder.
Jane was born Jane Ellen Burkholder to Kathryn (Mott) and Harvey Burkholder on March 30th, 1957 in Ames, Iowa. She was the middle child of three beautiful girls, and was blessed with loving parents and a strong community. From a very young age, Jane always knew she wanted to be a teacher, and would often “play school” with the neighborhood children and her sisters.
Jane received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary in Education from Iowa State in 1979. She then moved to Kansas City for special training in educating underrepresented students. Becky Soukup Obituary
Becky Victoria Soukup, 64, went home to be with the Lord on the 11th of October, 2022. A visitation will be on the 17th of October from 4-6:30 pm at LifePoint Church in Ames followed by a prayer service to honor Becky at 6:30.
A celebration of her life will be held on the 18th of October at 10 AM at LifePointe Church (Ames) followed by burial at Center Cemetery (Story City), and soup lunch at LifePointe Church.
Becky Victoria Soukup (Whattoff) was born in Ames, Iowa on the 9th of January, 1958, the youngest daughter of Donald and Clara Whattoff. Growing up she attended Campus Baptist Church and graduated from United Community High School in 1976. She also attended Boone Community College for a year due to her mothers prompting and Iowa State University for one day.
Becky married David Joseph Soukup (Ames), her high school sweetheart, on June 3, 1978. Together they formed David J. Soukup Construction where Becky would perform the architectural duties and accounting while her husband built the homes. Over the course of their careers together, they helped transform Ames into what is encountered to this day.
As a lifelong artist, musician, and animal lover (primarily horses!) Becky loved to endow the world with love, joy, and the peace that comes with knowing Jesus as her Messiah and Savior. She had painted many murals around Ames over the decades and even ran her own company named Rebecca’s Decorative Painting. She employed her three young children teaching them a wonderful work ethic, while she was able to focus on The Art. She has also recently authored and illustrated several children’s books that cover the topics of growing up in the country, highlighting all sorts of different animals, and living a life full of fun!
Growing up, Becky loved to sleep in the barn with her animals and could be found barefoot riding her favorite horses. One of her favorite things to do was to teach her children how to ride horses. She would often take all three of her children on long camping expeditions through high creeks and rough waters with a stick in her hand to “guide” the horses into following her commands. She also participated in numerous parades and rodeos in which she loved to show off her dressed-up children riding dressed-up horses.
Becky is survived by her husband of 44.5 years, David Joseph Soukup; her three children, Amanda (Matthew) LeBoutillier, Levi (Ciera) Soukup, and Joseph David Soukup; 6 beautifully loved grandchildren, Pierce, Evelyn, twins Jesse and James, Clara, and Noel; and her siblings, Martha Jean (John) Nordyke, Elaine (Steve) Stone, Kathie Whattoff, Sherry (Steve) Erb, Nancy (Peter) Flynn, and Don (Vickie) Whattoff. She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Clara Whattoff.

4-16-2014 Roosevelt School renovation and construction continues on the 90 year old building, converting it to housing. This school building had been vacant for a long time, so in my opinion, this was a good thing, but not sure if it was good for the City of Ames to give up yet another centrally located piece of land large enough for a school.

21st annual Ames High School All Class Holiday Gathering get-together held Saturday December 26, 2015 at Olde Main Restaurant, Ames, Iowa. 200+ classmates attended the 2015 Holiday get-together, it was a lot of fun, like a small all school reunion. Went through 160 name tags by 9pm.
