Kindergarten teacher Kristin Poppens brings attention to her mouth as she sounds out a letter. It’s part of an amped up plan to increase literacy proficiency rates at Cedar Falls’ Hansen Elementary School. It’s working: The proficiency rates now hover around 100 percent. What’s going on? They are taking a science- and evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. Explicit and systematic instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness paired with intentional practice opportunities for students to read and write is the new norm. Drilling is important – make sure students know the sound of consonants and verbs like the back of their hands before introducing a new skill. Read the story: rb.gy/4yety

I've never really understood why anyone thought that phonics were a good thing to teach children: surely they just have to forget it again to learn to read proper English?

This is a phonic edition of one of the classic "Ladybird" books for children, found in a charity shop.

from "Phonics and Word Power Book A," 1976.

He's a boy, he's young and he's not keen on the idea of learning. I am throwing every possibly type of media at this: Reading Eggs, phonics CDs, Letter Factory DCD, Dandelion books and phonics cards (thank you Spud!). I'm not sure if we're making progress but I *think* we are. Tonight, watching the Letter Factory he got a pad, got a pen, and drew some letters. This is a huge advance for Cy. So totally juxtaposed to the V, a bookworm who just reads and reads and reads.

The Sagemont School has always embraced technology. Its middle and high school students were using laptops long before they became commonplace on school campuses. Now, even the school’s youngest students are engaging in a technology-rich curriculum. Recently, the school introduced iPad technology and Interactive Whiteboards to its pre-kindergarten classes.

Sagemont’s Academic Pre-Kindergarten Program boasts a strong curriculum. It focuses on cognitive skills such as number recognition, counting, sequencing, sorting, matching, simple addition and subtraction, opposites, and simple geometry, as well as language arts skills such as letter recognition, letter sound, beginning and ending sound recognition, beginning sight words, rhyming words and phonics.

Pre-K teachers are using iPads in center-based learning activities. With over 750,000 apps available on Apple’s App Store, there’s one for each of these academic skills. “We use specific learning apps that help our Pre-K students learn pre-reading skills, sequencing, sound-letter recognition and patterns,” explains Pre-K Teacher Mrs. Carluccio. “The apps help our students learn important concepts while having fun, all through the use of their tiny fingertips.”

In addition to being fun for the children, the iPad technology allows teachers to integrate differentiated instruction into every lesson and heighten student learning. Teachers can pick and choose the apps and learning games each student will explore based on the student’s academic level. The apps can be used for both remediation as well as enrichment.

“Based on student’s pre-assessments, we can present each student with a well-researched, educational app based on their level. For instance, some students may need remediation in letter writing skills, while others can benefit from enrichment activities such as sight word recognition,” states Pre-K Teacher Mrs. Eisensmith.

Another benefit to iPad technology is that is provides instant assessment and feedback to the children. “Because these education apps are interactive, developmentally appropriate and incorporate game technology-based learning, the children have fun while learning at the same time,” notes Preschool Teacher Mrs. Weber.

Although this technology has only been in place for a few months, the Sagemont Pre-K teachers are already noticing the benefits. Not only are iPads an incredible teaching tool and motivator to learn, they have also helped students develop critical social skills such as sharing, taking turns and working together.

The school did not jump into this technology lightly. A great deal of planning was involved before the introduction of this curriculum. According to Principal Joann Laskin, the teachers were trained on how to use the iPad as well as how to find the most modern and comprehensive learning apps. “Sagemont teachers also participate in comprehensive training programs for Whiteboard technology throughout every school year to remain contemporary in our mastery of its use.”

But, ultimately it’s about making certain the students master the use of technology. “Technology is an integral part across all grade-level curriculums,” explains Principal Laskin. “Sagemont’s mission statement affirms that we are ‘committed to delivering a college-preparatory Preschool through 12th grade education in a technologically-rich, supportive, and culturally-diverse learning community.’”

The Sagemont School offers a college preparatory curriculum and operates two campuses in Weston, Fl. In preschool through the elementary grades, The Sagemont School provides core concepts in a creative environment combined with weekly specials that include science, art, music, Spanish for non-native & native speakers, swimming, PE and media and technology. From middle school through high school graduation, Sagemont students choose from a variety of regular, honors and AP course work. In addition, students share in a networked wireless laptop environment and participate in a comprehensive guidance program for college entrance. Tonight's kiddy lesson was the last one for the year. I sensed that they were pretty tired but still showed enough interest to revise some old patterns. And of course a few games to end off a year of solid progress.

I'm really impressed with how far they've come in their English language learning in the couple of years we've had so far. All thanks to them of course. I've merely taken on the role of facilitator and actively allowed them to learn for themselves. It's so rewarding to see the benefits of applying student-centred learning.

I owe it all to the papers I crunched out back in uni studying the humanistic learning theories of psychology pioneers Paulo Freire and Carl Rogers. Creatively testing their book smart claims in real life practice is what it's all about.

Featuring the voice of Buzz and shaped like his starship, this learning toy laptop contains thirty different activities that teach Spanish, phonics, letters, numbers, typing skills, logic and problem-solving! odin has had his fridge phonics set for quite some time, but it has only recently become one of his favorite toys; with his recently mastered simple shape sorting he's now adept at puting the letters in the toy with the correct orientation which initiates a song that teaches letter names and letter sounds. there's also a little red button below the letter that plays the alphabet song, which never fails to get get odin to dance a little jig.

although i know the toy is popular with "civilian" parents, it's particularly popular with (micro)preemie parents whose children often have speech delays of some sort or another. in fact, when i looked for amazon reviews of the product, the very first one that i currently see is written by a micropreemie parent and is entitled Great for Speech-Delayed kids!. which is appropriate because other than his fondness for "no!" he still isn't saying anymore words than he was during his developmental assessment. which while the issue is not a dire concern, it is notable that during our pediatrician visit for rsv shots he gave us a "furrowed brow" look when we replied that odin wasn't speaking more words.

but he does love the phonics. especially the letter "M", which is probably and not surprisingly because it's the first letter of mauja and mamma.

in addition to the interest in phonics, we are having some success with teaching him baby signs which is quickly becoming an invaluable communication skill.

more on that when i can actually catch him signing when i also have the camera at hand :-)

akloopy: So hard to pick this stuff. I feel like I failed last year because he didn't enjoy it like I thought he would. It helps this year I've learned he's more of a auditory learner, but he balks at the word school now.

marilynjeffersphotography: @akloopy don't feel like you failed!! You are learning right along side him. I have already tried out 3 different curriculums. I ended up switching to timberdoodle mid stream last year. It was one of the best decision I have made for my boys. I mixed and matched this year for a stronger LA book and MathUSee for 2nd grade math. We use the "Story of the World" audio CDs for history and lots and lots of audible books in the car or for "quiet time". My boys love doing stuff with their hands! And timberdoodle has a really strong emphasis on using award winning games to develop their critical thinking/motor skills/reading/the list goes on. Sometimes we will just play games and build all week! Levi was SO excited to find out he was going to be getting school work this year lol. It was too cute! You can feel free to come out to the house and look through everything! We have a little preK, K, 1, and 2

akloopy: Mathusee was one that was recommended for him, and we did story of the world last year but skipped the CDs. Been looking into timber doodle and really like a lot of it. Not so interested in the religious portions though. I'm also looking into Lego curriculum to supplement

marilynjeffersphotography: @akloopy The nice part is that there is so much funding available for curriculum that I don't stress over picking out books. If I don't like it, I stop using it and order something different. We have gone through 3 language arts books, 3 math options, and are just now finding our groove. I am excited about this year!! Now that I have found my way hahaha... Good luck!! And have fun picking out books/games. Take him to chickabiddy books in anchorage and let him pick stuff out with you!! I bet that would get him more excited about this year.

akloopy: What are you using for LA? Sorry for all the questions!

marilynjeffersphotography: @akloopy No worries. I am happy to answer any and all questions if it helps. This year we are using "first language lessons" by Jessie Wise level 1, handwritting without tears, phonics pathways, and bananagrams. We have used and liked everything previously except for The one new book. The new one is the first one I mentioned by Jessie Wise. I will let you know what I think of it, but I read through a bunch of pages before picking it and was ready to commit. I was specifically looking for something really comprehensive, concise, and contained within a single book. Yes, it is the most boring looking book in the stack of curriculum but it was the right one for me and my boys.

akloopy: The one thing we had luck with was hooked on phonics, and I was able to win 2nd grade free at a homeschool meeting last week. Handwriting without tears did have a few tears for us! Haha. I'll take a look at that other book. I did put in a request to timberdoodle to get a quote for a secular package.

marilynjeffersphotography: @akloopy sweet deal winning! I didn't push Reuben on handwriting, I kept thing very short. If he could do a couple letters/line well, we called that good. ;o)

In my previous entry, I wrote about homeschool. I teach him since he was 2months and now he is 4months ++, lets share what kinds of homeschool activities we have done together...

* Mathematic : Rafiqh learns to count 1 till 20 in 4 languages (malay, english, japanese and arabic)

* Language arts : Playing flashcards, mini-books, learning phonics from website and etc. in 4 languages.

* Music : Everyday I will sing for him. For example twinkle2 little star, I love you, You are special, If you happy and you know it, Air pasang pagi, tepuk amai2 yada2.

* Islamic : Sing nasyid2 25 rasul, 10 malaikat, 20 sifat Allah, Asmaul husna and selawat. Usually I just play the YouTube videos and let Rafiqh enjoys them. Every week, I will introduce Rafiqh with 1 short surah Al-Quran and continue to recite the same surah for the rest of the week. And for surahs which have been learned before, keep recite them more and more.

So far, he always give full-cooperation. Well done baby! Cuma flashcards collection masih belum banyak. Yang dibeli sebelum ni cuma alphabet, numbers, colours and shapes in english and malay. So, now I need to make more and more...

- body's parts in english, malay and arabic

- animals, fruits, vegetables and things in english, malay and japanese

- katakana and hiragana

- numbers, colours and shapes in japanese

- etc

Tapi Rafiqh ni susah nak concerntrate bila diajak bercerita. Boring kot. Sekarang aktiviti tu dihentikan sementara waktu. Nanti bila dah nampak dia minat, slowly I will introduce him to stories...

Ermmm nama jer full-time housewife tapi memang susah jugak nak curi masa. Banyak woo kerja dalam rumah ni. Sometime seharian Rafiqh tak pegang buku, hehe, my bad... But, like I mentioned before, homeschooling is not duduk-ajar-pressure sampai bijak type of education, we must creative! Guna peluang, ruang dan kesempatan yang ada untuk "mengajar"...

Contohnya:

- ketika mandi dan siap2kan dia, ajar laa tentang parts of body.

- ketika memasak, I put Rafiqh in his chair/sofa, then I tell him I will recite the new surah for this week, mention him the name of the surah and I start to recite it, repeat it for 3 times, then tell him I will recite surah2 yang dah diajar minggu2 lalu. Selesai jer, sambung pulak bercakap tentang binatang. Sebut nama binatang in english, malay and japanese, siap dengan bunyi lagi... Sambil2 tu, I will tell him what I'm going to cook, tunjuk ini ayam, ini karot, ini bawang yada2, kalau perlu, bagi dia pegang sendiri dan ceritakan sifat2 benda tu, warnanya, bentuknya dll... Next, singing, selalunya menyanyi ni bila dia dah tak senang duduk, dia dah mula gelisah, haa masa tu nyanyi laa sambil buat gaya ala2 badut, sure dia gelak happy.

- since my house ni kat tingkat 5 yang tak ada lift, so banyak laa anak tangga kan. Haa time turun naik tu, kira laa anak tangga. Rafiqh cuma tau nombor 1-20, so kira 1-20 in malay, then 1-20 in english, in arabic and japanese, habis!

- at least once a week in weekdays I bawa Rafiqh jalan2. Tolak stroller sambil ajar tentang dunia luar - eg. pokok, bunga, kanak2, bangunan, kenderaan dll, pendek kata explain apa saja yang lalu depan mata.

The most important is both of us have fun!

Btw, baru2 ni I found 1 blog which the mommy home-school all of her children. BRAVO! Home-school ni ada pros and cons nya, sure laa ada advantages and disadvantages. Same goes to school.

Like I mentioned before, my objective of our home-school is to help my baby's development. I want to provide a good foundation for him. Once he is ready to involve in formal education, I will allow him to enjoy the moment. But, I still believe, if the parents prefer their children to be home-schooling, that's their own decision, must be the best for their children. I respect their decision... Go on!

Apapun, for myLove and me, tak laa sampai tahap tu. Nanti Rafiqh 3 tahun, I nak dia ke sekolah, sebab I like japanese education system, tambahan pula, I really want to know how the teachers approach the kids in learning. Nanti, I nak apply untuk adik2 Rafiqh pula, insyaAllah...

trio of origami gift boxes made out of lesson plans from my son's home school (i believe we have a science and a phonics lesson plan in these)

i marblized the paper using acrylic paints and then sealed the surface to protect the paint and add a bit of body to the paper.

each box is made of 3 parts. there is a liner box with a separate solid bottom piece and an outer box which ties closed with organza ribbon threaded through eyelets

...Happy Holidays From Jon in Thailand.

It is 2;45 AM December 25th here right now .

....Thai Smile ..........;-)

There is a recreational path called a The Cleveland/Bradley County Greenway. It is is a linear corridor along Mouse Creek that passes underneath roads. The Greenway is in Phase 3 of 6 total phases. It is just about 2 miles long at this point but when it is done it should be about 4 miles long.

On one of the underpasses was this 'graffiti". I do believe someone needs to study spelling - but I guess they were spelling phonetically. I have laughed about this over and over......

I had to take 3 separate pictures for the 3 words and then just combined them into this one picture so you see it all at once.

The clothespins are the mouse traps. Clip the mousetraps onto the words with either the -eek or -eak sounds.
