I was happy to find this photo of Robert W. Phillips, IMHO one of the hardest to find. I will always remember meeting him. Neil, who later accompanied me on many astronaut chases, pointed out to me who he was at a 2003 event where I was interested in Barbara R. Morgan, who had finally been scheduled to fly (she was Christa McAuliffe's alternate.)
Phillips served on the back-up crew for the STS-40 mission of space shuttle Columbia in 1991 and taught for many years as a professor at the University of Colorado.
But prior to STS-40, Phillips was one of the prime Payload Specialists for what was then known as Spacelab 4/STS-61-D.
But there were delays in scheduling Spacelab 4 - the mission does not appear on late 1985 launch schedules - and there are indications it might have finally flown in 1987, a year late, as STS-71-E.
Further delays from the loss of Challenger led to Phillips being medically disqualified due to his age (60) from what became Space Life Sciences-1/STS-40 when it was rescheduled in 1989.
STS-40 finally flew in 1991.

Through an opening in a heavy door, a shaft of light falls onto the shining surface of the white linoleum floor of a pristine laboratory. The glowing shaft stretches wider and the black silhouette of Phillip Toledano moves into the room. Phillip Toledano is an experimental research scientist studying fantastic and absurd freaks. He sedates the creatures and removes them from their cages to pose them for archival photos. I spotted this specimen in the bike corral at SE Taylor St and Water Av. At first glance it looked like a standard mid-century Phillips British three-speed, albeit with pink OURY grips. But then on closer inspection, I noticed how much the owner has modernized it: alloy 26" x 1 3/8" (650A) rims, modern side-pull brakes with SunTour levers, and cotterless crank set. It's all topped off with a Brooks B66 saddle and a Carradice saddlebag. Classy!

phillip is australia's (previously immigration minister, now the attorney general) most hated conservative....actually there's probably more.
Used to wear the Amnesty International badge on his lapel, till they publicly asked him to remove it. He was in charge of the refugee camps that hold illegal refugees in the hope they'll get sick of trying for a visa and go home. Works on everybody but those without a home.

This handsome devil lives behind the gas station up the road. He's being fed so much I'm afraid he'll never leave. I've scolded about the sugar and bread to no avail. I think the damage is done. But he is a stunning beauty isn't he?

This image originated from a box of personal slides taken by Muriel Sibley and recently discovered in our archive. However of the 600+ images found many are of Formby past and this is just one of them. FCS September 2018.
While in Oakridge, Oregon, I visited a Society of Three Speeds member and his lovely Phillips roadster. It is actually TWO frames welded together! He had a 21" and 22" frame and chopped and welded them together to get a larger 25" frame. He pointed to where the tubes were welded together but I couldn't tell. The parts were cobbled together from the two bikes plus some other ones.
A good crowd turned up at the RGU Clubrooms to celebrate the fourth anniversary of Paul Phillips' death. Pictured right is Una, wife of Paul with Deborah and Stephen.
Maine's Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes system was a conglomeration of several smaller railroads, notably the Sandy River Railroad, the Phillips & Rangeley Railroad, and the Franklin & Megantic. In the early days, it was apparently common for crews on these two-foot lines to bring their rifles with them on the train during hunting season. Traveling through the deep woods of Maine, the little trains often spooked large game, such as deer and bear, providing an excellent opportunity for the crews to bring home something more than just a paycheck. In this scene, the crew on a mixed train, from Carrabasset to Strong, has flushed a large buck and the fireman quickly brandishes his 1898 Winchester Rifle for a shot at what might be dinner for the next week and a half.
This scene was staged during a February, 2024 photo shoot on Maine's Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum, which featured WW&F Locomotive #9 decorated in the livery of her very first owner, the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, where she carried the number 6. Trailing on the rear of the consist this day is Franklin & Megantic Coach #2. Both the engine and the coach would have run on the Sandy River back in the day. The train is shown here at the rural crossing for Rosewood Stables, not far from Milepost 7.
