anyone had forgotten what this tree looked like.
Having photography as a hobby has many benefits over philately; the hours spent inhaling fresh air whilst exploring the natural world, the locomotive advantages of moving your backside off the sofa, not to mention the chance to meet like minded togs, although I can live without the questioning scowls from the Bank Manager as you justify the necessity of that new lens purchase.
Furthermore, it is the effect it has on simply opening our eyes as we become acutely aware of the changing light, the graceful flow and development of the clouds as they dance and flit across the sky and how a scene can change dramatically from one moment to another.
I’n't nature wonderful!
Anyone recognise the lighthouse in this video?

The Singapore Philatelic Museum (新加坡集邮博物馆) is a museum about the postal history of Singapore and its stamps.
The museum, located at 23-B Coleman Street in Singapore, was formerly part of the Anglo-Chinese School, completed in 1906. In the 1970s, the building became the Methodist Book Room until it was restored to become the present museum. The museum is currently closed for renovations.
Singapore Philatelic Museum opened on 19 August 1995 to promote interest in and the appreciation of Singapore's history and heritage in philately. Besides the permanent galleries, the theme galleries offer a host of changing exhibitions throughout the year. These include displays from the private collections of renowned philatelists, travelling exhibitions from overseas and themed exhibitions to commemorate new stamp issues. The museum has a stamp shop, and is popular with stamp collectors.
On May 20, 1939, the US Post Office inaugurated its official trans-Atlantic airmail service to Europe.
It was Pan American Airways’ president Juan Trippe who pushed for this new regular trans-Atlantic airmail service. By January 29, 1939, the first Boeing 314 arrived at Pan American to prepare for its journey. The plane included three lounges for passengers, a dining room, and 35 sleeping areas. The cost to fly as a passenger on the trip was $375 one-way or $675 round trip.
On March 3, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt christened the plane the Yankee Clipper with a bottle that had water from the seven seas.
After several weeks of preparation, the first trans-Atlantic flight aboard the Yankee Clipper began on May 20, 1939, coinciding with the 12th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight to Europe. The Yankee Clipper was loaded with 1,800 pounds of mail and took off from Manhasset Bay, Long Island around noon. The Clipper passed over the New York World’s Fair – just 500 feet above fairgoers – before heading out to the Atlantic. The Yankee Clipper made stops in the Azores and Lisbon, Portugal, before arriving at Marseilles, France after 26-and-a-half hours.

Alfonso XIII (17 May 1886 – 28 February 1941), also known as El Africano or the African, was King of Spain from 1886 until the proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931.
Alfonso was born at Royal Palace of Madrid in Madrid on 17 May 1886. He was the posthumous son of Alfonso XII of Spain, who had died in November 1885, and became King of Spain upon his birth. Just after he was born, he was carried naked to the Spanish prime minister Práxedes Mateo on a silver tray.
Five days later he was carried in a solemn court procession with a Golden Fleece round his neck and was baptized with water specially brought from the River Jordan in Palestine. The French newspaper Le Figaro described the young king in 1889 as "the happiest and best-loved of all the rulers of the earth". His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as his regent until his 16th birthday. During the regency, in 1898, Spain lost its colonial rule over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States as a result of the Spanish–American War.
Following World War I, Spain entered the lengthy yet victorious Rif War (1920–1926) to preserve its colonial rule over northern Morocco. Critics of the monarchy thought the war was an unforgivable loss of money and lives, and nicknamed Alfonso el Africano ("the African"). Alfonso had not acted as a strict constitutional monarch, and supported the Africanists who wanted to conquer for Spain a new empire in Africa to compensate for the lost empire in the Americas and Asia. The Rif War had starkly polarized Spanish society between the Africanists who wanted to conquer an empire in Africa vs. the abandonistas who wanted to abandon Morocco as not worth the blood and treasure
In April 1931, General José Sanjurjo told him even the army was not loyal.[citation needed] On 12 April, the republican parties won a landslide victory in the 1931 municipal elections, perceived as a plebiscite on monarchy. Alfonso left the country on 14 April as the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed, but did not formally abdicate. He eventually settled in Rome.
His fondness for the sport of football led to the patronage of several "Royal" ("Real" in Spanish) football clubs, the first being Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña in 1907. Selected others include Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Real Unión, Espanyol and Real Zaragoza.

I love collecting U.S. and foreign Christmas postage stamps, and have many of the stamps portrayed here in my collection. I love when I can combine my hobbies!
And a belated (or very early) "Merry Christmas" to everyone!

My dad knew many many stamp collectors!

So how did I come across my late father's contacts' business card folio today? Our old but trusty Maytag washing machine broke the other day. The problem is relatively simple to repair (still costly though) so we are determined to get it fixed. In order to clear out some space for the repairman to do his job, I had to move some boxes around, and in doing so came across my dad's business card folio.
My father collected stamps, coins and many other things, so his contacts and associates are from many walks of life and many different countries.
The stamp depicts proudly Taiwanese flag carrier China Air Lines's Boeing 747.
For decades between the early 1950s until the 1990s, China (communist People's Republic of China) and Taiwan (Republic of China) were officially at war, and there were no direct postal, telephone, air or marine communications between the two Chinas, yet hundreds of thousands of families were separated by the political hostilities. My late dad, us being in British Hong Kong which maintained direct contact with both China and Taiwan, would be the middleman for dozens of separated families. His contacts in China would send letters to him in Hong Kong, and he would forward them on to Taiwan. Meanwhile, his Taiwan contacts would often send money to him, to be forwarded to their families in China. Because of that, my dad received dozens of letters from China and Taiwan every month.
My late father and his brothers have been serious stamp collectors all their lives. I recently took out some of his collection and made some photos. Stamp collecting has been out of fashion for years, but some Chinese stamps are still worth some money. We're keeping them for now.

Alberni Post Office - The Alberni Post Office is a one-and-one-half storey brick building with a basement. It is located on the corner of Johnston Road and Gertrude Street in Port Alberni, British Columbia. It has a flat roof and an articulated entrance. As a landmark building, the post office is also valued for its architecture. Its Art Deco style is important as a symbol of permanence and modernity in Alberni's history. Built in the key modern aesthetic of its day, the 1939 post office reflects its importance in the community, and stands as a monument to the value of Alberni's early identity and status as an important centre for the logging and fishing industries. The post office is a valued reflection of the status and modernity of this community in the first half of the 20th century. Alberni takes its name from the canal which was named in 1791 by Lieutenant Francisco Eliza after Dom Pedro Alberni. Alberni was in command of the soldiers taking part in the Spanish expedition under Eliza sent by the Viceroy of Mexico to occupy the coast, 1790. A sawmill was established at the head of Alberni Canal in 1860. Captain Richards, HMS Hecate, called the locality Alberni the following year.

A friend has just introduced me to an exciting group The Amazing World of Postage Stamps
Now I’m a keen collector and need a place like this where I can lick ‘em and stick ‘em.
I specialize in only collecting rare stamps of myself … in fact this “penny black” is the only one I have.
If any of my friends here have any stamps of yourselves, or stamps of anybody else then please post them to the group.
The world being such a small place nowadays, one sometimes has to travel to the past to find mystery and wonder. This almost worthless stamp from 1911 depicting Ahmed Mirza, with the slightly melancholy stare of a 13 year old who somehow finds himself Shah of Persia, is probably even more exotic now than when first stuck in some schoolboy album. It's also a marvel of intaglio printing; this stamp is only 28mm high.
Banner at the Singapore Philatelic Museum, Coleman Street for You've Got Mail - Art on Envelopment exhibition.
The contents aren't a patch on today's stamp magazines, but I love the symbolic framework of the title page. At the top, Britannia receives a stream of flying mail from a representative of the colonies, carrying the hermetic caduceus representing industry and communication, against a background of ships at sea. Below the nicely hand-lettered title (influenced by Edward Johnston, maybe, his Writing and Illuminating and Lettering had come out only a few years before) is the dome of St Pauls — Fleet Street and Strand were already centres of philatelic trading.
At the foot of the page there are beribboned cartouches of rail and sea transport (no airmail yet) either side of crossed whip and posthorn symbolising an earlier form of mail distribution.
Bits of my collection! Released in 1962 and depicts children reading, sleeping infant, playing ball, vaccination. Scott #891-894 (Portugal). These are definitely some of my favorite stamps in my collection--the gestures of these children are so natural, nuanced, sweet and simple.

A philatelic cover is an envelope prepared with a stamp(s) and address and sent through the mail delivery system for the purpose of creating a collectible item - covers with cancellations from unusual places. This cover was sent by Eugene Morris (Mauritz) Rickson to his brother Leander "Lee" Sergard Rickson - both were stamp collectors and were living in the same house in White Rock, B.C.

The SEMIAHMOO Post Office opened - 1 March 1950 - changed name to White Rock Sub No. 2 - 13 August 1956.
SEMIAHMOO / B.C. - CDS cancel (full circle) and boxed "R" (Registered) to White Rock, B.C., 1 June 1951. Paid the domestic 24-cent rate (four cents first class postage, plus 20 cents registration), in use from 1 April 1951 to 31 March 1954 with mixed frankings - Canadian and Newfoundland stamps.
(1956) - The SEMIAHMOO and WHITE ROCK HILLTOP Post Offices were closed on Saturday night but in their place, three sub-offices were opened, at the corners of North Bluff and Nichol, Pacific and Johnston, and Maple and Columbia. These offices, together with White Rock Post Office, give the residents four places where postal business may be transacted instead of the former three. Eleven street letter boxes as well as three parcel boxes have been erected at convenient locations including the sub Post Offices. Parcel post and special delivery services to the door have become effective for those residents within the letter carrier delivery area. Rural mail delivery patrons will continue to be served as before and a few residents who live in areas that do not yet qualify for delivery are served by group boxes or individual boxes at centrally located points. In addition to the employment of the letter carrier staff it has been necessary to hire contractors for clearance of the street letter and parcel boxes as well as parcel post and special delivery service. During the preparation for delivery service the public was requested to complete and return to White Rock Post Office a directory card for each adult member of the family. Many of the cards have now been returned but there is still quite a number outstanding. It is very important that they be completed and returned in at once in order that mail bearing the former postal address may be properly processed for letter carrier delivery.

The original owner was Percy Heptonstall, a Christmas present from his aunt in 1889.
Unfortunately the cover is the best bit, the contents are in a really poor state. The paper is browned and brittle, and someone has glued lots of common British penny stamps on the pages for several countries.

On the technical site, some lessons learned from testing developer and film combinations so far:
- Grain is depeding from film waaaaay more than from the developer (d'uh), so fine grain developer costs more film speed than you gain in finer grain.
- Fine grain film with pushing developer (like HC110, it's great for pushing) works extremely well.
- Use filtered or even distilled water for the last two rinse agitations. Never ever forget a wetting agent like Agepon.
- Scan a bit too bright. Then lower brightness in Photoshop. Watch the grain disappear (works for my Coolscan 4000 - and this one is horrible for silver grain).
