Gray Clouds

Permanent gray clouds hover near,

The rain that follows is what I fear.

I run for shelter but there is nothing here.

The showers don't start off small

Oh, life doesn't like me at all.

The things that bring me solace are slim

and my future in this world is looking pretty grim.

I will not let the clouds swallow me up

so instead I drown my sadness in a cup.

All I can do is wish for sun tomorrow

to hopefully dry up all my sorrow.

'The Cross', a hill-figure memorial, was constructed as a permanent testament to the sacrifice of those from the parish who died during the First World War. It was unveiled in September 1922 by Major-General Sir Arthur Lynden-Bell KCB KCMG DL JP (1867-1943). The memorial, which was designed by Mr C H Groom the village school headmaster, originally included an inscribed memorial stone within a separate fenced enclosure at the south end of the cross. The cross hill-figure was constructed by Mr Freddie Baldock with volunteers from the village, who excavated its form through the natural geology by hand.

To ease access for survivors and relatives of those fallen, the memorial stone was re-located in 1960 to the churchyard of St Mary's Church, Lenham (NHLE 1086103, Grade I), nearly 1km to the south-west. Following the Second World War, a second inscribed memorial stone was added and is located within the above churchyard. The re-located stones, which now stand on a plinth, are of roughly hewn granite with smoothed face-panels, inscribed with black lettering. These include the names of those fallen in both World Wars.

In 1977, the Ashford Branch of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Association presented a wooden bench and a memorial plaque as additions to the separate stepped memorial enclosure, south of the cross. The hill-figure cross is maintained by volunteers from the village and was most recently restored with new chalk in 1994.

MATERIALS: the memorial is constructed of compacted chalk on a natural chalk base.

The cross measures approximately 61.5m north-south and 21.6m east-west.

A separate enclosure which contained the original memorial stone, 27m south of the cross, has iron railings set on low stone walls. Inside there are six steps leading to a terrace with a wooden bench fixed to a concrete base.

A memorial plaque affixed to the gate of the railed enclosure is inscribed and reads: THE WHITE CROSS/ ON THE HILL/ COMMEMORATES THE DEAD OF THE TWO WORLD WARS/ THE MEMORIAL STONE WITHIN THIS ENCLOSURE WAS REMOVED TO THE CHURCHYARD/ IN 1960/ THE SEAT WAS PRESENTED TO THE PEOPLE/ OF LENHAM BY THE ASHFORD BRANCH OF THE/ REME ASSOCIATION TO COMMEMORATE THEIR CLOSE/ *LINKS WITH THE MEMORIAL WAS PRESENTED/ IN 1977. Another photo taken on back land near Fort Belknap. The Brazos River is about 400 yards to the right of this spot. This is an area that has a number of old rusting "dead" farm machines, as well as a few sheds and barns that aren't good for anything except serving as homes for local wildlife.

This was taken back in September of 2005 during a time of an exploding population of big yellow grasshoppers. My sister hated walking through tall grass and weeds here, always wanted me to lead the way. Nature has a way of sometimes "balancing things", which is what we saw happening here. Whatever conditions created the bumper crop of hoppers, also created a huge population of Golden Garden Spiders... which feast on them. There webs were everywhere, almost all having one or more bundled up hoppers hanging in them. This was by far the largest number of these spiders we've encountered anywhere... a true arachnophobe's nightmare, and the reason Susie had me "break trail" for her. But, whether you like spiders, or not... if you want to get interesting pics, you sometimes have to put up with creepy situations.

I've been at it all day. Trying to erase every part of you… from my mind, my heart, my soul…my life. But the inevitable truth is you're not going anywhere for a long, long time.

Appearing to be the sole example of this combination (Dennis Trident, East Lancs Lolyne) based at Weymouth in the peak summer in 2017 therefore unsure if permanently allocated or on loan for the 'summer uplift' although this type has flirted in the allocation here previously as Leyland Olympian replacements (these Lolyne bodied examples have mainly moved over to the Hampshire operation since).

Here we find 32703 W703 PHT operating on a Cruise Service shuttle from Portland to Weymouth (note the recently fitted LED that replaced a flipdot doesn't quite match the blanking off sections around the display). It been empty after dispositing its passengers in the outbound trip prior.

This is a diorama that I made several years ago. It is a permanent part of my Barbie armoire dollhouse.

Wooden walls and floor. I scored and stained the floor, painted the walls, and built the window frame. Hubs cut the window opening for me and cut the wood to size. I mixed the paint myself to get just the right shade of pale pink.

This station is a delight, with a great vantage point from the nearby bridge. Even without a train it is a lovely view, but of course, I have photos of it with trains to follow in time! Once a stop on the Ruabon to Barmouth line, the station closed permanently in 1964 after flooding, it was due to close in 1965 anyway. The line was dormant for about thirty years until the Llangollen Railway, one of the country's best preserved railways, opened in 1996.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

Canada Permanent Trust Building in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is an Art Deco structure built between 1928 and 1930. It was designed by the architect Henry Sproatt. The 18-floor office building is located at 320 Bay Street and was built by F. Hilton Wilkes.

The building is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act since November 26, 1975. There is also a heritage easement agreement on the building, Registered C440805, since January 7, 1988. The building has a heritage designation plaque to inform the public, placed in 1978.

The Canada Permanent Trust Building is designated to be of architectural value as being one of the finest highrise bank buildings of its period in Canada. Designed using the simplified classical forms of the Style Moderne, it combines an emphasis on its vertical height appropriate to its basic form, with the impressive vaulted banking hall, characteristic of bank buildings at the beginning of the Century. The building is also important as a part of the Bay Street canyon of high-rise buildings that has come to be regarded as symbolic of Toronto's financial quarter."

First permanent establishments

In 1635, the first seigneurie was granted on the territory of Cape-Rouge, but revoked the following year by the Company of One Hundred Associates. However, by 1638 Paul Le Jeune, a missionary Jesuit, had noted in The Jesuit Relations the presence of some families in the valley.[1] Between 1647 and 1652, the seigneuries of Maur, on the west, and Gaudarville, in the east, were established on the territory. From that moment, based on taxable citizens, the settlement on the lands of Cap-Rouge are established. The village formed is served by the parishes of Ancienne-Lorette in (1678) to the north; of Saint-Augustin in (1691) on the west; and of Sainte-Foy (1698) in the east.

Geography

The beach of Plage Jacques Cartier and the cliffs of Cap-Rouge.

The name of Cap-Rouge, meaning "red cape", comes from its cliffs facing the Saint-Lawrence river and made of schist rock bearing a reddish tint. The other main topographic feature of Cap-Rouge is the Rivière du Cap Rouge valley where are concentrated some historic buildings as well the archeological remains of a pottery workshop active from 1860 to 1892. It is believed that until the end of its operations the workshop mainly used imported clay rather than the local one, which has a rather red hue.

The Cap-Rouge area is located to the south of the Canadian Shield and Laurentian Mountains, at the confluence of the geological regions of the Saint Lawrence Lowlands and of the northern Appalachians. It mostly sits at the western foot of the Quebec promontory, in the way of the Logan's Line - an inactive fracture in the Earth's crust first documented by Sir William Edmond Logan.
