The Perito Moreno Glacier, located 78 kilometres (48 mi) from El Calafate, was named after the explorer Francisco Moreno, a pioneer who studied the region in the 19th century and played a major role in defending the territory of Argentina in the conflict surrounding the international border dispute with Chile.
The 250 km2 (97 sq mi) ice formation, 30 km (19 mi) in length, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile. This ice field is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.
Despite most of the innumerable glaciers worldwide retreating, one of the few unusual glaciers that maintains in a state of equilibrium is the Perito Moreno Glacier because it continues to accumulate mass at a rate similar to that of its loss

Le front du glacier fait environ 4 km de large, la partie que l'on voit fait 2km depuis le site d’observation. Des morceaux se détachent régulièrement et tombent dans le lac, engendrant de fortes vagues Le glacier Moreno descend de la cordillère comme un véritable fleuve de glace.Il nous reste 5 km à parcourir pour parvenir au glacier

El frente del glaciar tiene unos 4 km de ancho, la parte que podemos ver está a 2 km del lugar de observación. El glaciar Moreno desciende de la cordillera como un río de hielo. Faltan 5 km para llegar al glaciar
Le glacier porte le nom d'un expert (Perito) du nom de MORENO Francisco. Celui ci a beaucoup travaillé dans la région pour définir les zones de partage (et d'écoulement) des eaux, vers le pacifique ou vers l'atlantique.
Son rôle fut prépondérant dans la définition de la frontière entre le Chili et l'Argentine. Il n'a pas vu le glacier, ce nom fut donné en son honneur. Le glacier fait en tout 30 km de long, avec sa partie principale, sans ses affluents de 14 km.
Un glacier est une rivière à l'état solide, une masse de glace et de neige en mouvement continu, sa vitesse variant avec la pente et le volume.

The glacier is named after an expert (Perito) named Francisco Moreno. He worked a lot in the region to define the zones of division (and flow) of the waters, towards the Pacific or the Atlantic.
His role was preponderant in the definition of the border between Chile and Argentina. He did not see the glacier, so it was named in his honour. The glacier is 30 km long in total, with its main part, without its tributaries, 14 km long.
A glacier is a river in a solid state, a mass of ice and snow in continuous movement, its speed varying with slope and volume.

El glaciar lleva el nombre de un experto (Perito) llamado Francisco Moreno. Trabajó mucho en la región para definir las zonas de división (y flujo) de las aguas, hacia el Pacífico o el Atlántico.
Su papel fue preponderante en la definición de la frontera entre Chile y Argentina. No vio el glaciar, por lo que se le dio su nombre en su honor. El glaciar tiene una longitud total de 30 km, siendo su parte principal, sin sus afluentes, de 14 km.
Un glaciar es un río en estado sólido, una masa de hielo y nieve en continuo movimiento, cuya velocidad varía con la pendiente y el volumen.
This is a panorama of the amazing Perito Moreno Glacier. Although this image is large, it doesn't come close to showing the sheer size of this glacier. The ice is literally several stories high and quite often, large pieces of ice break off and smash into the water. You can all the time hear something which sounds like thunder from the internal pressure in the ice. It is a beautiful experience.
Le bateau part du port privé de Punta Bandera et traverse les icebergs et les eaux gelées du lac Argentino.Au programme approche des Upsala et Spegazzini,( le plus haut glacier du parc avec ses 135 mètres de hauteur.) Nous verrons aussi les glaciers Seco et Onelli.

The boat leaves from the private port of Punta Bandera and crosses the icebergs and frozen waters of Lake Argentino, approaching the Upsala and Spegazzini (the highest glacier in the park at 135 metres high) and the Seco and Onelli glaciers.

El barco sale del puerto privado de Punta Bandera y atraviesa los témpanos y las aguas heladas del lago Argentino, acercándose al Upsala y al Spegazzini (el glaciar más alto del parque, con 135 metros) y a los glaciares Seco y Onelli.

Das Boot fährt vom privaten Hafen in Punta Bandera über die Eisberge und das gefrorene Wasser des Lago Argentino, vorbei an den Upsala- und Spegazzini-Gletschern (mit 135 Metern der höchste Gletscher des Parks), den Seco- und den Onelli-Gletscher.
Oh, how I would have loved to catch that column of ice collapsing down!

Le glacier avance perpétuellement Le glacier avance en moyenne de1m70 par jour au milieu et de 30 cm sur les côtés, mais cela peut atteindre jusqu’à 3m en un jour. Ceci engendre des pressions énormes sur la glace qui se soulève de plusieurs dizaines de mètres et faisant entendre des craquements aussi fréquents qu'inquiétants. Les mouvements font régulièrement tomber d'énormes blocs de glace, accompagnés d'une forte détonation.
Mais difficile de prévoir la chute d’un sérac ...un peu de patience et on est sûr de voir un de ces éboulements…..et pour la photo…être prêt…. C’est rapide et soudain

The glacier is constantly advancing. On average, the glacier is advancing by 1.70 m per day in the middle and 30 cm on the sides, but this can reach up to 3 m in one day. This creates enormous pressure on the ice, which rises several tens of metres and makes frequent and worrying creaking noises. The movements regularly cause huge blocks of ice to fall, accompanied by a loud bang.
But it is difficult to predict the fall of a serac...a little patience and you are sure to see one of these landslides..... and for the photo...be ready.... It is fast

El glaciar avanza constantemente. Por término medio, el glaciar avanza 1,70 m al día en la parte central y 30 cm en los laterales, pero puede llegar a los 3 m en un día. Esto crea una enorme presión sobre el hielo, que se eleva varias decenas de metros y produce frecuentes y preocupantes crujidos. Los movimientos provocan regularmente la caída de enormes bloques de hielo, acompañados de un fuerte estruendo.
Pero es difícil predecir la caída de un serac...un poco de paciencia y seguro que ves uno de estos desprendimientos..... y para la foto...prepárate.... Es rápido

First of all, we encounter numerous small icebergs along the water of this arm of Lake Argentino. Several glaciers converge on this arm and end their journey there

A walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier in El Calafate, Argentina. Impressive! one of the very few glaciers which are growing in spite of climate change.

One of the most extraordinary places I've ever visited.
The sound of breaking ice blocks is surreal.
On our last day in El Calafate we went on what was called a mini trek to get up close to the Perito Moreno Glacier.
This was a short boat ride across one of the side arms of Lago Argentino to where the glacier touched land, then a hike to the glacier edge.
As we approached the glacier there were already teams of people hiking across it, like ants in a sugar bowl.
With the glacier always moving and calving the guides must constantly be working out new paths and cutting new steps into it to keep these tours running.
The image shows just how big this glacier is.
El glaciar Perito Moreno nace en el Hielo Patagónico Sur, una extensión helada entre Argentina y Chile, y desemboca en el lado sur del Lago Argentino, el más grande del país. El Perito Moreno alcanza en algunos puntos los setenta metros de altura y tiene un frente de cinco kilómetros.

Le glacier Perito Moreno, en espagnol Glaciar Perito Moreno, est un glacier d'Argentine situé dans le parc national Los Glaciares de la province de Santa Cruz, et une partie de son origine se trouve dans le parc national Bernardo O'Higgins, dans la région de Magallanes et de l'Antarctique chilien, au Chili. Il est situé à 78 kilomètres d'El Calafate, en Patagonie argentine. Son front glaciaire de 5 000 mètres de longueur et de 60 mètres de hauteur s'étend dans le lac Argentino.
Avec une surface de 250 km2 et une longueur de 30 kilomètres, il fait partie des 48 glaciers alimentés par le champ de glace Sud de Patagonie, dans la cordillère des Andes, que l'Argentine partage avec le Chili.
