Statue of Mercury - Roman god of trade, profit and commerce - on a 40 meter high column on the Sundt Department Stores in Bergen Norway. The 3,5 meter tall statue was made by Sophus Madsen.
The Sundt Department Store was completed in 1938, after extensive public debate. The building was designed by Per Grieg who was influenced by European contemporary architecture, in particular the Town Hall in Hilversum and the Bijenkorf Department Store in Rotterdam (destroyed in 1940), both designs by Dutch architect Dudok and located in The Netherlands. Sundt Department Store now has historical preservation status and is known as one of the finest examples of modernist functional architecture in Norway.
