Its funny how our perception of what's home and what's near and dear to us changes over time.
At one point, this sunset which used to be a highlight of my day is now a mere distant memory.
" Pictures are just a way
To hold on to what you knew,
Cos even if the memories don't change,
The people in them often do. "
This photograph is my coming to terms with my ancestors and cultural practices. Somalia has always been “the other” to me, and as a teenager, anything other seemed like what kept me from belonging. Little did I realize that I had an entire world, an entire ancient cultural practice, that I belonged to that surpassed any religion.
The necklace in this photo belongs to my grandmother. The dress is my mothers'. I am looking away from the camera because in my own way, I’m still finding my footing. I’m not quite here, or there. I’m learning. But I’m where I need to be.
This year I made it out to the Hammer Museum's exhibition of Made in L.A. for the 2018 year. I was a bit skeptical at first because I had seen some other works from Pacific Standard Time and Made in L.A. that were not too impressive. Nowadays, the Made in L.A. label does not really mean much. I think "styled in L.A." or "designed in L.A." could have more significance. Nevertheless, some Instagram photos actually got me off the couch.
Many of the artworks were impressive while not always making a direct connection to Los Angeles and its influence or significance. But artists like Lauren Halsey, Neha Choksi, and EJ Hill made/exhibited very strong connections with Los Angeles and its periphery. I immediately felt a strong relation to Neha Choksi's work and her telling of the progressions of the day, the ladder symbolism is very immediate to my own recent experience and mood. The sunglass work by MPA was also interesting as I feel it could also relate to mental illness and how some people's issues are larger than themselves. But mostly the exhibit this year was enjoyable, and I would like to see more of a connection and a representation of place and how it contributed to the influence and development of the artists.
I have these glasses sitting on my desk most of the time, and I have a whole container of them on my TV stand. They look like cheesy toy sunglasses, but they're actually much more than that. These are polarized 3D glasses for my TV set, but they look so goofy nobody believes me! I have found that recycling the glasses from cinematic 3D movies is a good way to get more, as it is the same technology!
A fun shot I put together in a few minutes. Messing around with saturation and hue. Flipped and applied a gradient. A little off, but still cool nonetheless!
Each one on us has a different perception of :
Life
Love
Happiness
Sadness
Death...
Once, i was told that noboby could see the everyday world in the same way, with the same eyes, the same vision.
I got toughtful for a little while...
And there, i understood the importance of feelings and the different ways to express them, the impact words can have on us...
The importance to express what you feel...

Logs had jammed up in the creek, but the flow of water around them was so graceful and alluring. Beauty truly is all in the eye of the beholder!
This space on the ground floor of the library is designed to be very open and accessible to large numbers of people, with computers, a print room and study tables, which I think makes it a negative learning space for me.
I think this space is negative for the kind of study that I like doing, as it is often very busy by the checkout desk and also very noisy due to most other people engaging in discussion (both study-related and non-study-related!) or group study.
I just refound a discussion about sharp images. Some people think that sharpness can be sacrificed for the feel of a picture. I sometimes like the effect, to tell the truth, but am aware that perception is always different. Even the same person can change how they react to a scene. I think that bees see things completely different to what we do, so anthropocentric judgements are limited in the scope of "things"... Oh well, the discussion is in the thread of someone who captures images in a candy box with a paper negative. His results are dreamlike. I recommend it, if you are interesting in perception or want to see what I'm talking about. www.flickr.com/photos/mickey1/3291098077/
If you have not pondered on perception, lucky you, or maybe you re too young. These things usually change with time
