Perak Cave, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia
Perak Tong Cave Temple is one of the oldest and most beautifully preserved temples in Ipoh. Within the huge limestone caves of Gunung Tasik, this temple was built in 1926 by Buddhist priests from China.
The temple houses over 40 Buddha statues with the centre-piece being a 12.8 metre high sitting Buddha. The cave sits at the foot of a 120m high limestone outcrop – one of several hills in the area – behind a simple but pretty garden, decorated with lotus ponds, pavilions, pagodas and two bell towers.
Spent a lonely night here next to the river bank not knowing how the scene will look like until the Sun rose thus revealing what lies infront of me. It was a pleasant surprise for a 1st timer here.

Willemsella is a monotypic genus so far and is found only in Peninsular Malaysia. Described in 1934 based on a pair of copulating adults in Dusan Tua, Selangor (Miller 1934), there was no record of Willemsella bicolor Miller, 1934 since then (Eades et al. 2015). It was only in recent years (after 2012) that this species was rediscovered in a new locality, Bukit Fraser, Pahang (Tan and Kamaruddin 2014). Since then, more specimens were collected from Bukit Larut, Perak, suggesting that this species is more widespread than previously known.

Though small compared with the #Danube, the #Malaysian river shares much with the Danube; both rivers are rich in culture and history, both supply water for life and living, and both face issues of equity, floods, water quality and environment.
Sungai Perak is the River of Life' for #Perak State in #Malaysia. It flows over 400 km in a 15,000 km2 catchment that covers 70% of the state lands. The second longest river in Peninsular Malaysia, it starts from the north-western corner of the state, flows south to Teluk Intan, where it bends westward and into the Straits of Malacca. The river divides the state into two nearly equal halves and thus forms its natural backbone. And this river of life is special in many ways.
History recorded that whoever controls #SungaiPerak has authority over the state. This adage still holds true and His Majesty the Sultan of Perak still resides in the Royal Town of #KualaKangsar on the bank of the river. This river is central to the history and traditions of Perak Sultanate and the people; its waters are part of royal ceremonies including the investiture of a new Sultan.
The famous #RoyalBelum is a 110,000 ha tropical forest reserve rich in biodiversity. Elephants and tigers still roam freely here. A river terrapin conservatory established in 1960 at Bota Kanan, remains one of few of its kind in the world. The lakes in the upper stretches are simply beautiful. Quaint traditional kampungs (villages) still exists between modern towns including Teluk Intan with its own 'Leaning Tower'.
For all its special qualities, Sungai Perak still needs 'something special' to survive in a rapidly changing economy. Sungai Perak needs good care to remain special forever, for future generations. Otherwise, as in many rivers, it will deteriorate gradually, unnoticed, until in a critical state.
Wonderfully peaceful, the Lake Gardens, Taman Tasik, of Taiping, the wettest town of Peninsular Malaysia. But this tranquillity was not always so, nor was it as beautiful as this picture shows.
Taiping was the premier tin-mining town of Perak in the nineteenth century. Soon after the discovery of tin here in 1844, mining was started. When the mining ended, the former pits were converted into this marvellous park with many lakes and very fine landscaping. Included is the very fine Taiping Zoo, probably the best and cleanest zoo I've visited anywhere in Southeast Asia.
Today there is calm, but in one's mind's ear you can overlay this peaceful pewter scene with the trumpetting of elephants used to transport the tin ore to Port Weld, not far away; with the cries of the hard-working miners; the sounds of a working mine. But all this has been washed away by history; yet this new view - even with the sound of cars on the circling road - enchants even more if you know something of the past!
I hurried back to my hotel before I'd be washed away myself...
