All my insect pics are one shot, hand-held macros of live insects in the wild.
Pentatoma rufipes belongs to the family Pentatomidae and is a large shield bug with a size of 12 - 15 mm. The species occurs throughout Europe and as far east as Siberia. It is polyphagous and not only feeds on plants but also on eggs, larvae and pupae of insects.
"Pentatomidae is a family of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, generally called shield bugs or stink bugs. The American name "stink bug" is specific to the Pentatomidae, and refers to their ability to release a pungent defensive spray when threatened, disturbed, or crushed."...Wikipedia
I started using a macro lens in late 2013. It opened up a whole new world of the smaller life around me. For several years I had noticed these interesting critters as they would often be seen climbing on the walls inside our house once the weather turned colder. Little did I know that stink bugs move into the walls of houses when things get chilly.
Since I've always been interested in things that creep and crawl, I found myself face to face with the insect. With my camera lens moving ever closer, the insect became motionless. What a wonderful way to meet someone face-to-face.
PS...I don't squish the bugs when they appear, but scoop them up in a tissue and place them outside. I do like those little creatures.

Most Stink Bugs (also known as Shieldbugs) not only smell bad but they taste terrible and are often coloured accordingly. The bright red spots on this one are arranged in a distinctive pentagonal pattern that no bird should easily forget.

Some female Stink Bugs (Shieldbugs), like this one in Brazil, shield their eggs from attack by parasitic wasps (another reason to call them shieldbugs?). If you look closely, you can see the little red eyes and tiny piercing mouthparts of the nymphs just beginning to develop inside the eggs.

A gorse shieldbug trying its best to hide ... and giving me an unusual view that piqued my interest. Are those black dots spiracles? Yes, said Google!
Being the open end of tubes (trachea) within the insect's body, the spiracles allow air to enter the tubes, from where it diffuses into the body---the insect respiratory system!
