I am not sure who or what the bird was squawking at, me or the shell, but I thought it was quite funny. Just wish the head would be sharper, but oh well... the pose and look make up for it (I think).

Roaming the beaches of Sanibel Island a few days ago, I encountered thousands of pen shells laying upon the sand. That was to be expected as they can always be found strewn about in high numbers there. However this time, I noted a few things that were different--most likely a result of the time of year. For one thing, I noted several with their egg capsules attached which I had never noticed before. In the pic above, the two pen shells are in yin/yang position in relation to one another, and between them is the egg case. For whatever reason, I went a little mad and began photographing the pen shells one after another and will upload five. Note the iridescent tips and the barnacle encrusted opposite end which are both typical of this species.

The most fascinating of nature's creatures must be the seashell. The shell is the external skeleton of a soft-bodied animal called the mollusk. Half of the world's mollusks are marine, the other half land or fresh water types. Their unique shapes, vivid, bright colors and spectacular patterns have delighted us all. No other animal in the world is as widely collected as the seashell.

This is now FINALLY hanging over the mirror in the hall bath. The image is a placemat from Fish River Grill #2 in Foley, Alabama. For a closer look, I recommend viewing in the Original size.

Note: This was the most confusing item I've ever labeled for identification, but I guess it was worth it.

Tairagai or Pen Shell is a large Japanese razor clam, very similar to scallop, that is commonly served raw in sushi bars or in crudo.

Tōkyō-to Chūō Oroshiuri Shijō (東京都中央卸売市場), or the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, commonly known as Tsukiji shijō (築地市場), or the Tuskiji Market, is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. The market handles more than 400 different types of seafood, in excess of 2000 metric tons a day, and provides employment to over 60,000 registered employees.

The market consists of an “inner market” (jonai shijo) and an “outer market” (jogai shijo). The inner market is the licensed wholesale market, where the auctions and processing of the fish take place, and where approximately 900 licensed wholesale dealers operate from small stalls. The outer market is a mixture of wholesale and retail shops hawking everything from kitchen tools to groceries and seafood.

The first market in Tokyo was established by Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Edo period when he invited fishermen from Tsukudajima, Osaka to Edo in order to provide fish for the castle. Fish not bought by the castle was sold at a market called uogashi (literally, "fish quay") near the Nihonbashi Bridge, which was one of many specialized wholesale markets lining the canals of Edo. In the aftermath of The Great Kantō earthquake of 1923, which devastated much of central Tokyo, including uogashi, the market was relocated to the Tsukiji district. After construction of a modern market facility in 1935, the fish market began operations under the provisions of the 1923 Central Wholesale Market Law, which the Japanese government had enacted following the "Rice Riots" (Kome Soudai) of 1918. Three major markets were established in Tsukiji, Kanda and Koto with smaller branch markets in Ebara, Toshima, and Adachi. At present, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's system of wholesale markets includes more than a dozen major and branch markets, handling seafood, produce, meat, and cut flowers.

Tsukiji Market opens at 3am every morning except Sundays with the arrival of seafood by ship, truck and plane, including the unloading of tons of frozen tuna. Auction house wholesalers, or oroshi gyousha, then estimate the value and prep the product for auction. Bidding can only be done by licensed participants, including intermediate wholesalers, or nakaoroshi gyousha, who operate the inner market stalls, and agents for restaurants, food processing companies, and large retailers. The auctions usually end around 7am and the purchased seafood is either loaded onto or on small carts and moved to the many market shops, where it is cut and prepared for retail.

Definitely SOME type of penshell...

AKA: Spanish oyster, Sand oyster

Penshells look like a wedge of pie. The point of the pie slice is buried straight down (so only the crust of the pie sticks up out of the sand...)

rough penshell [Pinna rudis]

We were snorkeling in the bay when I located a large saw-toothed penshell. Inside were hundreds of fish larvae. I have no idea what species of fish this is. This is not an underwater shot. Matt and I worked hard to keep water on the larvae while I worked.

Found this in my archives when Lita and I went to Marco Island for her birthday but I realized I never posted it here. :)

Pen shells are thin and fragile, but also beautifully translucent...

As I wandered the beaches of Sanibel Island recently, I encountered thousands of these large clams pictured above which are generally known as pen shells, and I began photographing them. This one benefitted from the sun's backlighting, making it appear to glow. The shells are fairly thin, and more than once I've inadvertently broken specimens I was transporting home.
