Macro Monday - Pencils, Pens, Erasers and/or Paperclips
This is one of my dearest buddies. I write something down using him at least once everyday. This is not a lie. I have jars of pens and pencils, but this is my guy right here.
One might say I have a pen fetish.

Writing by Hand: Last week I mentioned one of my resolutions was to read more printed books. Along with that, I'm resolved to spend more time actually using pen & paper to write cards, letters, thoughts...anything. Just so long as I'm not using my fingers to type. I had such pride in my penmanship, and I miss it.
Filofax: In the '90s, my entire life was contained in my overstuffed black leather Filofax personal organizer. It not only held a journal, but also my credit cards, checks & detailed handwritten entries of all my activities, purchases, travels, etc. I loved the tactile feel of turning to a fresh page to start a new day & writing out my plans. Now it's all in my lovely but very sterile iPhone. :(

OK, I give! I was tagged a couple of times a while back, but at the time I was just too busy. I’m still busy, but was just tagged by one of my favorite “flickr friends”, Arvid from Norway, and I’m not about to let him down. Be sure and check out his stream, which includes gorgeous photos from many beautiful places as well as wonderful works by his lovely & talented wife. I “met” Arvid 7 months ago and saw that he was about to leave flickr because of some jerk who was apparently being an idiot. I browsed through Arvid’s stream and left a comment along with many others encouraging him to stay. I’m glad he did, because he is one of the nicest people in the flickrverse. Thanks, Arvid, for sharing your beautiful photos with us and for the nice comments on my photos that just make my day!
Here goes... 10 things about me that you may or may not know (many of which are probably TMI ~ LOL):
1. Houston, Texas has been home for the past 19 years. I’m ALMOST a native-born Texan, but they tell me that only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I was born in Texarkana, ARKANSAS but we actually lived about 2 miles away from the hospital on the Texarkana, TEXAS side. I grew up in Arkansas but, as the saying goes, “I got here as quick as I could”.
2. Music has always been a major part of my existence. I’m a rocker ~ the harder the better. My first concert was Boston when I was in the 9th grade. In general, I hate country but end up listening to it some every February (BBQ Cookoff & Rodeo time). Toby Keith or Keith Urban can get me primed right up for some tight Wrangler viewing ~ lol.
3. My favorite “real” food: There’s not much I won’t eat but, whatever it is, “the spicier the better” is what I say. BBQ, Mexican & Cajun dishes and sushi rolls (the wasabi is the best part!) rank pretty high on the list. I’m really a junk food junkie, though. I like pizza, potato chips, ice cream sandwiches and any kind of cookies and eat too much of all of it. I’m addicted to Dr Pepper.
4. I’ve lied about my age so long that when I really need to be accurate, I have to stop & do the math. Age is relative, though, right?
5. I’ve been married twice and I’m pretty certain there will never be a third time. I’ve been single by choice most of my adult life and will likely end up an old spinster in my rocking chair with nobody but a faithful dog at my feet and a fluffy cat in my lap. I’m good with that. Pets require a lot less maintenance than husbands and they don’t leave the seat up.
6. I’m a girly girl. I love flowers. I was Miss Lincoln County, AR. I love shoes, especially high heels. My closet is full of them, in all colors & some have never been worn. Years ago, I would never have been caught dead in pink or anything flowery. Now, I love them both. I’m scared of spiders and bugs creep me out.
7. I have a tomboy side too though. I love football (GO TEXANS!). And NASCAR. I used to ride an old boyfriends’ motorcycle and would like to own one myself along with a bassboat so I don’t have to depend on a guy to take me fishing. Catfish scare me though (but that fact belongs in the girly girl section).
8. I used to have beautiful penmanship. Now can’t even read my own chicken scratch half the time. Same goes for typing. I think I’m somewhat dyslexic. Thank God for spell check…
9. I love history and wish I’d paid more attention in school. The history of old buildings and different areas is very fascinating to me.
10. My dream car is a Dodge Viper. In fact, I AM one according to the Which Sports Car Are You? quiz. Here’s what it says about me: “You're all about raw power. You're tough, you're loud, and you don't take crap from anyone. Leave finesse to the other cars, the ones eating your dust.” That about sums it up… Next time my boss tells me I need to be more diplomatic about something, I’ll just reply “I can’t help it, I’m a Dodge Viper”.
Well, now it’s time to tag 10 people, so here you are:
1. Jason @ www.flickr.com/photos/jhwest/
2. Ineke 61 @ www.flickr.com/photos/36482723@N04/
3. Kinjo @ www.flickr.com/photos/kinjotx/
4. Brooke @ www.flickr.com/photos/28634332@N05/
5. Clay.Wells @ www.flickr.com/photos/cwellsphotography/
6. Brian Cormack @ www.flickr.com/photos/cormackphotos/
7. Udo @ www.flickr.com/photos/63273094@N00/
8. Mike @ www.flickr.com/photos/lmgach/
9. Chris Newberry @ www.flickr.com/photos/cal34/
10. ~AlohaGlor~ @ www.flickr.com/photos/29388737@N02/
The rules:
1) Post a photo of yourself and list 10 things that viewers may or may not know about you.
2) Tag 10 people & be sure to let them know they’ve been tagged (a quick flickr mail will do).
3) Don’t forget to link back to the person who tagged you!!!
I was telling Sarah the other week that I would like my handwriting to be better. I hate the way I wield a pen; my lettering, like me, tends to try too hard to be something it's not and then give up, throwing away all semblance of constructive form and exhausting itself in a wildly deteriorating devil-may-care mess. Sarah, who possesses perfect penmanship, said this was a most excellent goal and that 2010 should be "The Year Meera Learns to Write."
On New Year's Day, as part of this wish, I priced out a kit to teach myself the absurdly complicated and pretty Spencerian script, but as I was on the verge of ordering it I stopped myself. It was a sign, like many others, of that urge to do too much at once, to reach for something so difficult that if I stopped doing it after a bit, no one could possibly blame me, even me. It was also a distraction from what I really want, which is to learn to write.
Oh, I write. No doubt. I work hard at it. I even get paid for it occasionally (though not often enough). But it's never struck me as something I needed to learn. Could learn. Last year, in a dozen different ways, I realized how untrue both those things are.
So, Spencerian script, you'll have to wait another year, or three, or four. In the meantime, I'll work towards you busily, learning to write.
For DIP-it-Thursday: "Lines and Patterns"
Not my best work, but I couldn't stand not having anything to submit to the group.
I didn't have a pink highlighter, so I used a red pen to make the "r".
I apologize for my penmanship ^___^ I was never known to have neat handwriting
-edwin mccain.
hmmmm.
please pardon the terrible penmanship.
do you have any idea how hard it is to write on yourself right there?
grrrr.
took forever.
So this gentleman had a lot to say on a Sunday morning on the sandy beach at San Sebastian, Spain, and I think you would agree his sand-penmanship is outstanding... but then clearly someone walked right through his essay.

Saint Rosalia’s relics were discovered in a cave on Mount Pellegrino, just outside of Palermo, in 1624 during an outbreak of the plague. Paraded through the city, they were believed to have brought an immediate halt to the epidemic, propelling Rosalia to patron saint of Palermo. These two designs in Grand’s distinctive jagged and loose penmanship were likely delivered for temporary altarpieces made for display in the city’s cathedral during the annual festival devoted to Rosalia.
When 'Yes' becomes 'No' (And vice-versa)
Today has sprung a surprise
a leak
to which nothing seems able
to stop the demise
an implosion so bleak
Help is the left hand
that doesn't seem right
such unfamiliar penmanship
like a foreign land
that doesn't seem quite
Yesterday seemed in full agreement
a winning ticket to trust
with the care of Summer
an affectionate twist so vehement
seeking a cure for fateful thrust
If today is God-given
then let it pray now
for my faith in tomorrow
has all but ebbed presently unforgiven
it's fastidious aura without a vow
Compounding the bloody malaise
breaking every rule of thumb
with bone-crunching efficiency
I enter it's damnable phase
with the shape of things to come...
Monday, Monday is the next target
always there to reimburse the weekend
for emotional debts accrued
via the informative tell-tell nugget
better known as the spine-chilling dead end
That comes with hope's overspend,
only pain for pain seems able to balance these books
into one voluminous relict
from where a thunderous preface does portend
the lost plot for which survival now looks.

I was wandering around, looking for something interesting to photograph. I found a few things here and there, but I wasn't truly excited until I saw this graffiti on an abandoned garage. That blue paint was great. The texture of the garage door was great. The pre-storm light was great. The penmanship was great. And the phrase was great.
With all those elements falling into place, my goal as a photographer was to make sure I found a way to present the entire scene in a way that gave all the elements their due.
I thought "Con Limon" was more Saga than Bryan Adams, but I had tinnitus by that point. Let's just get all misty-eyes and nostalgic and say it sounded like a spayed Celtic Frost.
This was also taken during the Fudekuyô (筆供養, ふでくよう) ceremony, when brushes of calligraphers and writers, who offered them in gratitude for last year accomplishments and in hopes of better penmanship ability, were reduced to ashes on November 23 at Shogaku-an (正覚庵), a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji Zen complex. See here the still growing slideshow.

SATR, a 22-year-old art star from Guangzhou, China, is best known for her ferocious depictions of animals, most often in her signature colour palette of red, white, black and grey.
Her distinctive brush strokes have been described as "vigorous" and her penmanship "exquisite."
With such a consistent style and subject matter, her murals have become almost instantly recognizable to those in the know since she first started working in 2013, winning her praise from around the world and contracts with global brands like Nike and Vans.
Called "Animals Told Me," SATR's show features "a series of paintings and drawings conveying her relationship to the animal kingdom."
This will be the artist's first solo show outside of Asia.

Today's final historical letter comes from Mercy Otis Warren, circa 1775. Warren wrote during the many different political and turbulent times in early American history; a painful reminder how women often had to write under pseudo names just to be taken seriously and professionally. The beautiful penmanship and content remind me why I truly loved this gift of recreated historical letters!
Theme: Letters We Write
Year Fourteen Of My 365 Project
It's been another long, busy week for Stormtrooper Bruce both with his daily duties and his off-time chores, but he has almost gotten everything done. Now that it's Movie Night, STB hopes he can get a little favor from the guys.
STB: Guys, you're late. What happened?
TK-1110: Problems at Security. Some bozo in front of us had some fruit on that list of Bake Off Banned Ingredients. Long story short, they confiscated it, he nutted up, backup security was called, and after he was carted off, it was our turn.
TK-432: Thankfully, we passed with flying colors. Not to change the subject but love all these presents. Superb wrapping, bows and everything. Super festive... but ... how come the gift tags are blank?
STB: I knew if I labeled them ahead of time, you two would spend the entire evening begging me to open them now. I figured since you don't know what's what, maybe you'll let it go. Maybe?
TK-1110: I guess. As long as I get custody of this bowl of candy canes.
TK-432: Am I at least allowed to shake these gifts?
STB: Well, not to change the subject - but since you two are late, I'll restart the movie and we can chow down. But I do have one teensy weensy favor to ask ...
TK-1110: I knew it. Burgers and brewskies usually equals a bribe. What is it this time?
STB: I've been so busy, I really need some help getting my holiday cards ready by tomorrow if they're to be delivered on time. The Death Star Post said tomorrow by noon for ship wide delivery. Not too efficient if you ask me, but it is what it is.
TK-432: I'm in, but only if I can shake that red one with the green bow. Guess it's true, a trooper's work is never done! So, do we get extra brewskies for good penmanship?

A tribute to all of you, my flickr friends for your generosity and support...
I’ve seen the first sign of life,
small grain of wheat
When it pokes the way onto land.
Raw, unseasoned and green
I’ve seen the Elements of growth…
The wind, the sun and the thunder
foretold by our ancient fathers
That It will season the green grain
And cradle love and loyalty
To a golden wheat…
“Strong, hearty and eternal”
A golden wheat,
the scholars of life,
the penmanship of trust,
My token of love
To you…
My many friends, I’ve never meat!

my fascination for calligraphy and fonts has been limited to purchasing a pen set a couple of decades ago... maybe that should be my next thing to learn how to do. for now, i'm limited to taking a picture of the pen.

Rainy day is my calligraphy day and some time the calligraphy practice is my spiritual meditation.
Zanerian whole-arm capitals are one of the hardest practices for most of the calligrapher and it's much harder for the amateur.
This picture demonstrated the "heart-shaped" style alphabets for the day.

I uploaded my first photograph to Flickr which I've reposted here!
There was quite a bit of controversy around this piece back then!
Flickr blocked me because it was "art" even though they suggested I find other "art" groups at the time! A lot has happened since then. Mostly, some fabulous flickr friends who are still part of my original contact list! Thank you again, everyone!
Sending you all a "virtual" love letter!
