The pendulum hanging from the ceiling of the Cathedral of Mexico City shows the tilt of the building with time, resulting from earthquakes and land sinking. Mexico.

“That was when I saw the Pendulum. The sphere, hanging from a long wire set into the ceiling of the choir, swayed back and forth with isochronal majesty. I knew—but anyone could have sensed it in the magic of that serene breathing—that the period was governed by the square root of the length of the wire and by , that number which however irrational to sublunar minds, through a higher rationality binds the circumference and diameter of all possible circles. The time it took the sphere to swing from end to end was determined by an arcane conspiracy between the most timeless of measures: the singularity of the point of suspension, the duality of the plane’s dimensions, the triadic beginning of , the secret quadratic nature of the root, and the unnumbered perfection of the circle itself.” — Foucault's Pendulum, Umberto Eco
Here we see a pendulum packer in its fully retracted or lifted position, where you can imagine all the rubbish has slid off the top surface, fallen into the hopper and waits for the blade to drop down and push everything into the body. One thing I love about this compactor design is the clean cycle, seeing that material drops off and essentially sweeps the floor of the hopper clean during the pack stroke. Biggest thing that gets my tick of approval is its simplicity but, seeing it’s only the pendulum itself, two arms hinged to each side of the hopper and a pair of hydraulic cylinders to power each of these arms. Also just a single pack valve needed, simply divided oil flow and a single position sensor to trigger extend/retract actions. Has been known to struggle with recycling/greens backlog in certain circumstances, but readying an empty hopper and prepping the blade in this position for that first bin in a street can make all the difference!

Looking down into the hopper of a Superior Pak we see the pendulum blade extended or lowered, being its home position where it pretty much seals the body aperture. You can very clearly see the hinge point at which the side arm connects to, with a hydraulic cylinder attached to the arm behind the steel covers. Looking in this direction you see the body hole, which isn’t too big to allow crap to overflow into the hopper and too small for blockages or density jams to occur. Even force is applied across the face of the blade, given duplicated actuation power on both sides, plus I’ve always believed this design is prone to less wear with the resistance created by the downward motion and symmetrical connection points. Also don’t get bulky blockages on these things like you potentially can with a paddle, only does block if the object is too big for the hole or when the body is actually packed out!
William Mortensen, Pit and the Pendulum
"... we are inevitably drawn by that which we fear, and cannot take our eyes from that which terrorizes us...Realism for its own sake is a blind alley... When the world of the grotesque is known and appreciated, the real world becomes vastly more significant." -- Mortensen.
I was inspired by Dr Shutter to try out long exposures with a simple pendulum. It was surprisingly easy to get going, of course it will take time to master as always :)

Mural inspired by pendulums from the museum Duesberg in the city of Mons, Belgium. Mixed thematics and mystical symbols were used to talk about the timetravel.

This is the world largest Foucault Pendulum housed in the Oregon Convention Center in Portland Oregon.
Strobist: 1 tungsten bulb right of and behind camera. I SB800 flash behind subject, camera left set at 1/128 in stroboscopic mode for 20 flashes at 20hz, triggered by PC cord to camera. Second SB800 flash behind subject camera right also set at 1/128 power fired by built in slave. Pendulum was set up to have a period of approximately 2 seconds; each swing took about 1 second (A seconds pendulum.) 1 second shutter speed. I tripped the shutter as the pendulum reached its farthest leftward movement.
